Holiday Musings and a permanent solution to rares
People also WANT flareswords, and lightsabers, and guns, and MSB to have the 50% spec bar, and the old wildy. point is, its not about want, because people's wants are what kill the game in the end. Everyone wanted the wildy, but so did RWTers, that one was an obvious for the greater good move. This one isnt as clear, mostly because its not jagex telling you that its not right. If I was the one who started posting that the wilderness was broken and leading to RWTing, people probably would've laughed and said thats too bad, but the wildy is such a big part of the game, they'll never remove it. Party hats arent right, so that means they ARE wrong, and something needs to be done. thats my view. not neccesarily this, but something close. A short post, but I think it was quite powerful, you made some good points. By who's definition? I don't think your opinion is right. Does that automatically qualify it as wrong, and something needs to be done about it? The point I'd like you to see is that just because something isn't "right" doesn't mean that it's by default "wrong" - or that because something is "wrong" that something needs to be done. I believe that our current system of government isn't right, and that our current tax system isn't right. I also believe that politically correctness is a big waste of time. Does this mean that by default all of these are wrong? Does this mean that they all need to be fixed? Does this mean, if I post my one suggestion on how to fix something, and its the only suggestion to fix it, that its automatically right, because it is a suggestion? I think on complex, opinionated issues like this, there is no single RIGHT answer - and so by default there CANNOT be a WRONG answer, except maybe changing it with unforeseen consequences. I think a lot of posters are playing games with words. It's a fact, not an opinion, that party hats are wrong, because Jagex (who are the GODS in this argument, there is no higher authority) themselves said so. That would be like God/Allah/Buddha/Moses/whoever you like popping out of the clouds and saying "ice cream is bad, don't eat it", and us saying "no, ice cream is good". I think the definition of "right", is a situation optimized to benefit the largest number of people as equally as possible, and if you're going to say "there CANNOT be a WRONG answer, except maybe changing it with unforeseen consequences", then you're contradicting yourself. And as I've mentioned before, the removal of the wilderness DWARFS what would happen if rares were permanently altered for the better, so I think your unforseen consequences are a bit far-fetched.

History and Future of the RuneScape World Map
You answered your own question. ;) I stated that RuneScape is a planet, yes. But remember the time period that RuneScape is set in. To them, just because RuneScape is a planet does not mean that it is flat. Although it's probably the case (that it is round), I was just curious as to where you drew the conclusion. As far as I remember, the images Jagex released showed RuneScape on a spheroid map, but that doesn't prove that it's round. I drew the conclusion from the fact that all planets are roughly spherical... it's safe to assume it's not any different in the RuneScape universe.

The Last Frontier of Runecrafting: The Soul Altar
Same : Now that I think about it, that makes perfect sense. Glouphire, in Arposandra, is meddling with the Anima Mundi (Latin for "The Soul of the World"), which has a LOT to do with souls... Hazelmere also said that it may have been time to pass the guardianship of the spirit trees on to our characters... and since he was killed by that damned Mahjarrat Lucien, someone has to take care of them. Good chance there will be a epic quest where we confront Glouphire and destroy him, find the soul altar, and become the guardian of the spirit trees. Plus Soul Wars is nearby (Arposandra is 99% guaranteed to be underground of the Poison Waste, from what we know). Perhaps when Jagex was talking about the biggest, deepest storyline they ever attempted... maybe they REALLY meant #150. The gnome, elf and dwarf series are all linked together, along with Monkey Madness. Perhaps the sequel and end of all these series will come together in a MEGA EPIC QUEST and release the soul altar?!

Holiday Musings and a permanent solution to rares
I've already explained why it's a problem: it was never intended to be this way. Secondly I feel that discontinuing items but allowing some players to keep them - for any reason - shows a broken system. Either make the items constantly available, or delete them entirely. All the other items in RuneScape follow this pattern.

The Last Frontier of Runecrafting: The Soul Altar
It doesn't make sense the soul altar would have anything to do with the Summer series, because it would seem that if it were, it would be in the spirit realm. And all the other altars are in the real RuneScape, so for consistency, the soul altar is probably corporeal.

History and Future of the RuneScape World Map
Your character suggests in one quest (Path of Glouphire, I think) that the Earth is round, but is told that he/she is silly. Also, Jagex has released a couple images showing RuneScape to be spherical. Also... You answered your own question. ;)

Holiday Musings and a permanent solution to rares
Tradable rares need not be eliminated. An idea that came up earlier in the thread was to have NPCs sell them at an infinite supply, but at the same kinds of high prices that the GE has them at nowadays. They could remain tradable, and their value obviously couldn't go down because of it, since the store price would be no lower than the street price. Effectively, it would freeze the decrease in supply, solving a major problem with discontinued items, but without hurting their status as a symbol of wealth. Yes, I'll back down on that tradeable rares need not be eliminated as long as there remains an infinite supply, although I'd like to see the santa hat become an untradeable item that becomes part of the Christmas 2008 reward, because for a expensive item to fit perfectly with the rest of the pieces which are free and untradeable makes little sense to me. However the untradeable rares definitely do need fixing. PS - Do you know what my most desired item in all of RuneScape is? A soul talisman.

History and Future of the RuneScape World Map
Undergound Pass, yeah :P Why is there a spelling error in a Jagex map? Anyway, I never knew the eastern desert was just glued onto the west side. Kinda funny, the sea just became the river Elid. And man, the desert really grew since this map, wow  Btw, I have a question, maybe you know this Dooku: The Underground Pass Quest was already created in RSC right? But the Elven Lands didn't exist back then... So how did the Quest end? And the tunnel system? Simple, the Underground Pass never ended with the Elven Lands... they didn't even exist until the mages opened the Well of Voyage when Regicide came out, which was an RS2 quest (released Monday, 20-September-2004). It strains my mind to think that far back... I wonder if anyone has the VERY FIRST world map that had the elven lands on it? I can't remember if Prifddinas started out with the northwest corner missing, or the entire top half. Thanks for the map, Systemless. I'm going to list all the maps I've found, along with yours, at the bottom of my post.

The Last Frontier of Runecrafting: The Soul Altar
I HIGHLY doubt Jagex releases updates based on formulas of any kind, but I'd like to see this one of yours... Hellbellz, you left these behind. I think you forgot to put them in I must have forgot them as well. >.< The soul altar definitely won't be released in the Elemental Workshop series. I don't think it has much potential but I can definitely see where you're coming from. Also, I'm not saying the series is "too small" to release big things, look at Plague City. It just doesn't seem to fit, and although it would place the soul altar underground, which fits with the pattern I'm expecting, under Seers' Village seem to be the wrong place for it... it seems to me that the soul altar would be better placed at the far edges of the world, as the death and blood ones were. Most likely in the south, since there aren't any altars there and it sort of seems to fit in the desert as I mentioned earlier. It's really hard to place the soul altar somewhere logical, because "soul" doesn't really fit well into any area of RuneScape as far as I can tell. All the others do. I think we have to look at the content of areas rather than just the terrain, because the blood altar being under a swamp makes no sense, but coupled with vampyres, it's nearly as obvious as the fact you're reading this post. We just need to find a similar connection with soul.

History and Future of the RuneScape World Map
I was Googling RuneScape maps, and I noticed one where the Kharidian Desert coastline ENDED (i.e. the east half of the desert did not exist). I remember this map from a loooooong time ago. :) http://www.freewebs.com/xatman911/Runescape%20map.jpg Also, the Heroes' guild used to have water north of it, but now it's all mountains. And north of White Wolf Mountain was grassy with a fence. Why in the world was that area so different before it was changed? I know the maps used to have that fancy curvy shadowing, as opposed to the new plain square shadowing which aligns to internal boundaries, but I don't think anything was there. Still, the big change in terrain seems odd to me. Also on this map you can see the desert ends in CLIFFS on the east. Oh wow... I just remembered that from in-game. Good times. :) http://www.geocities.com/twigman428@sbc ... rldmap.jpg PS - Know any website that has old cached versions of the RuneScape website (so I can find maps)? archive.org says runescape.com is blocked. >.<

Holiday Musings and a permanent solution to rares
That might actually be...okay. I mean...I guess sooner or later they'll run out of ideas for holiday event rewards, at which point I GUESS it'd be okay to re-introduce older ones... I dunno. I like that you're being a bit more open minded. I think I understand that you want SOME kind of exclusiveness, and that's what you and others are very adamant on, along with me being very adamant on allowing everyone to get every item in the game in at least some way which is independent of their account creation date. Perhaps we can in some way combine our adamacy (I made that word up); you seemed to agree with my above proposal so that's progressive. Also, if you want to go even further, you could add a year limit to certain items. For example, to get a scythe, you must have played a certain number of holiday events, or a smaller number of holiday events of the same type the item was from. For example: a scythe could cost 25 points. Each Holiday event could give a certain number of points depending on certain factors. It could be the same for all events, it could be based on your performance on the event, it could be based on the type of event, etc... There are events for the following holidays in RuneScape and for my example I'm going to use a system based on a fixed number of points for each event - 5. Here's the list: Easter - 2002 2003 2005 2006 2007 2008 Halloween - 2001 2002 2003 2005 2006 2007 2008 Thanksgiving - 2008 Christmas - 2001 2002 2004 2005 2006 2007 2008 That's 21 holidays so far. 105 points. If you've done ALL of them, you'll have 105 points. So... to get a scythe, you'll need to have played at least 5 holiday events. For a ring of egg, you'll need only 10 points. So... just keep playing holiday events, and you can spend your points on old items from the holidays you missed. This keeps the exclusivity for older players, but also allows newbies to eventually earn these items, which is the whole point - equal opportunity. I think a points system would be great to re-introduce new holiday items while at the same time keeping older players happy. There could perhaps also be a "Festive cape", costing 100 points. Only the very oldest players would be able to obtain that! And Joe Newb couldn't just snap it up tomorrow... but if he worked hard for 5 years, he could. I think bonus points for filling certain conditions would work well, too. PS - post 1251, now I'm a Varrock Guard. :)

History and Future of the RuneScape World Map
For my 1250th post, I think it warrants something special. Hopefully this long topic will be less controversial than my last one. ;) Now, let's start the topic... For a long time I've loved maps... especially the RuneScape map. I have always been fascinated by the world map, and loved to wonder about what was behind the darkness that plagues the edges of our world. This topic is mainly for discussion of the Unknown, its history and its future. First of all, I think most of us can agree that Gielinor is round, due to hints in the game and images by Jagex. How large is our current continent relative to the planet? Will Jagex ever "finish" the planet, and actually make it seem round in-game (this can be difficult to code)? Will we ever move to another planet? One thing I feel is interesting is that Jagex is moving rather slowly with game content. Obviously games are difficult to develop, and although Jagex had said RuneScape will be their focus for the next 5 years, all good things have their end. Eventually RuneScape will die, and eventually Jagex will cease to exist as a company. However due to current trends I feel these are unlikely to come soon, especially the latter. But really... when RuneScape DOES die, how 'finished' will it be? What will they do with all the code? For reference, The Realm Online is 13 years old (I read it was the longest running MMORPG), but there are only 180 accounts. RuneScape will be nearing that age soon, but it does seem to be growing and I don't see the end near. How is this relevant to the map, you ask? Well, in just over 8 years, we've gone from this: http://runevillage.com/world.php ...to this... http://www.runeuniverse.us/worldmap.jpg In my opinion, there hasn't been much expansion in 8 years. Yes, of course... there was a lot of content that had to be focused on, but I really think that the world should be expanded. Other MMORPGs have huge maps compared to RuneScape, and I wonder if Jagex will start moving towards this direction. Think of all the land that has been left unopen for years. Menaphos hasn't been opened since 2005 - 4 years. And I can't even REMEMBER how old Prifddinas is... 2004? Also, the amount of unknown seems to have decreased dramatically. From RuneScape Wikia, more Unknown was revealed 14 times in 2005, 12 in 2006, 5 in 2007 and 2 in 2008... and so far, 2 in 2009. Why are they releasing LESS land? The current map won't be able to contain new content for long, I think a lot of players would like more areas to explore. Maybe they really have been working on it behind the scenes, and we just don't know that the Eastern Lands have been in development for 5 years and they'll release a continent and 20 quests all at once? I doubt it, but it sounds nice. It seems to me that Jagex likes to start things, then keep doing other things and not finish them. Take Runecrafting for example. 6 years and it's not finished. I suspect it would be QUITE EASY to just pop the soul altar into a random spot and finished it off, don't you? Of course I'd rather they follow the pattern and release a nice hard quest with it, but still... 6 years? Finish what's been started, Jagex! There's also many quest storylines. You might argue that we need to have something new to look forward to, but what's stopping them from making new storylines? Release the next quest in a storyline every few months, and start a new one when it's finished. That's all. We can still have concurrent ongoing storylines, but I think the amount we have is a bit ridiculous. Think of the quest possibilities with a whole new continent (Eastern Lands). In the real world, Asia is the largest continent and it seems like the Eastern Lands will be similar to this. Well... if we've had 149 quests on our current continent (which isn't finished, mind you), think of the possibilities on a larger continent like the EL. Here's the main questions: 1. Why has the amount of land being released each year, decreased since 2005 (or 2004)? 2. Do the Eastern Lands play a role in the above, and if so or if not, does quest 150 have anything to do with it? 3. What does the future hold for the current unknown areas (this is opinion-based, so just post your imagined ideas, but try to use logic!)? 4. Introduce some of your own! I love to talk about maps, so I'd really like to hear your thoughts and ideas about how the RS map will progress in the coming years. NOTE: The charter ship map shows the "complete" RuneScape map, and I think following the coastlines shown there is fairly logical and thus should be considered in any ideas you have. Here's an image, from the RuneScape Wikia: South of Uzer / North of Ullek: I don't think this area has much potential. It can't logically expand east and the charter map seems to agree, so just possibly a small new city and quest. It seems to me that areas are left blank for a reason... if it were blank desert I think they'd have just finished it right away, so there must be something special there. If not a city, possibly a minigame or a new resource. For it to expand south would be geographically odd, and again the charter map wouldn't agree. I think the new area will also be a sort of tropical area, due to the fact that near the end of the map near Uzer, there is a tree, and some grassy area. Quite odd... Menaphos and the Western Desert: As for Menaphos and Sophanem, there isn't really much to say about what's south of them, I believe the coast is pretty much where the blackness is... maybe we'll see a nice port and a few ships in Menaphos, with a new charter location. I think each of the cities will nearly double in size, around 1.5x their current to be more specific. West of Menaphos... well, according to the charter map there's not much area and I don't have any guesses asides from something completely off-topic that Jagex will put there. Morytania: As the charter map shows, only a small bit of Morytania is yet to be revealed. I think the Vampyre cities will expand slightly further east, and possibly the rest of the continent will be rich forests that haven't yet been corrupted by the kingdom's evils... West of the Frozen Waste Plateau: This has been Unknown for so long I can't even remember. Nearly since RSC. I think it was mainly to stop players exiting the Wilderness, and it's just gone forgotten for many years. I think it also may have been the site of since canceled projects such as Wilderness Tag. There's really nowhere for this place to go, and Jagex should probably just fill in the icy tundra unless they can think of something better. Not even I can. North of Prifddinas: Another extremely long-unrevealed area. I think we'll see more elven related map area for a bit north of Prifddinas, with mountains sealing it off from Piscatoris. This area could be revealed in the next elf quest, and I'm almost certain it will be revealed when Prifddinas is opened. Also, the northwest corner of Prifddinas has been missing for a long, long time. Why, this makes no sense. Has it simply been lost in the schedules, or was it originally left that way with the intention of hiding something...? Poison Waste: Truly, I don't know why this isn't ended yet. It seems to me like there's NOTHING there. Unless Arposandra is actually SOUTH of the waste and not underground as I suspected earlier. The charter map wouldn't agree, but this area especially, albeit it being very dead ended, actually makes me doubt its accuracy. After all, the waste has been creeping further north every year, hasn't it? I'd think that, with the sewer pipe being EAST of the waste, it'd tend to spill south into the ocean. However, if there's something there (Arposandra) with even more sewer pipes pumping in sludge, that explains the northward movement. Feldip Hills: I've seen other people suggest that this will "wrap around" to the poison waste, making the water south of Castle Wars into a pond of sorts. I disagree because unless the Feldip Hills and poison waste expanded a HUGE area - like, almost the entire southwest Unknown on the world map, it would be geographically odd. And due to the current shape of Feldip Hills, it seems like it would be geographically odd either way. So I say that Feldip Hills should be pretty much cut off where they are. PS - On the RuneScape Wikia, I'm trying to pinpoint the dates each bits of land were released. http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Unknown It was previously noted that Unknown was revealed 14 times in 2005, 12 in 2006, 5 in 2007 and 2 in 2008, and I'm going to need some help filling in the blanks in the table I made. If you have any RuneScape world maps, and know at least roughly what date they're from, please post them (as links, not images) so I can try and finish those lists. RSC and RuneScape maps will do. PPS - Don't worry, no code words in this topic. ;) --- Map list --- Here's a small archive of old world maps I've found on Google or that have been submitted by users on this topic. I'll try to put them in order later. LM means "Last Modified"... I check the response headers of these websites when I download the maps, to give me at least some idea of when they are from. Holiday Musings and a permanent solution to rares
Just a few things. Your proposals do, in fact, take away the uniqueness and rarity that so many players enjoy with tradable holiday items. Not to mention months of work gone into making enough money for people to buy said items. They would also take away the sense of reward from players who actually did the holiday tasks. Because that's what the untradable holiday items are: rewards from being there and participating in the holiday events. I just don't think that those who weren't there or didn't bother to do the event actually deserve the items we got. There's always be plenty more holiday events and items to go along with them. Best they stop ferreting over what they don't have and look forward to what will be given to us for Easter. Also, how did your friend "decide to give it to his brother" (the hilt)? You know, the whole unbalanced trade thing... In response to the bold... more junk. This is my point. Why keep releasing more useless junk, and wasting brain energy on thinking it up, then just releasing the same rewards every year? Perhaps they could release a new holiday event each year, and then, each year, you can choose to do none, one, some or all of them, obtaining the rewards from each you choose to do. And scythes and bunny ears could be dropped again. I really don't think this would take away from anyone. After all, the rewards are only available for two weeks per year, which makes it fairly exclusive, but also allows everyone to achieve the same, and with the drops, ALSO gives you your silly RSC nostalgia. :P And in response to your last sentence... Bounty Hunter?

The Last Frontier of Runecrafting: The Soul Altar
Yes, you have good points. I agree with all your logic, and to enforce your reason for the law altar's location - it's definitely an obvious one. As for air, the area where it is is an open, airy place so I suppose it makes sense. Also, nice idea for the mind altar, I never thought of the Oracle before. Nor did I think of the Digsite for the earth altar. Blood was also a no-brainer. I predicted its location pretty easily, years ago. I'd like to see some replies on the location of the soul altar, though. Let's think hard... what place in RuneScape screams "soul"? For some reason whenever I hear soul altar I think of the elves and Tirannwn, but that makes no sense whatsoever. All the ones Tiigon mentioned here make absolute sense. No doubt soul will as well... we just need to think. By the way, the last two altars have been underground... as soul is the very highest level altar I think there's no doubt it will also be underground. To be fair, I'll start us out with a guess: Menaphos/Sophanem dungeon. That place seems pretty dangerous, and there's the Devourer near there. She devours souls, doesn't she? Also, the ancient Egyptians were all about souls and the afterlife and that sort of thing, so it sort of makes sense to me that it would be somewhere in the desert. And a mysterious place like Menaphos having been closed for so many years must mean something, eh? It's nearly as old as Prifddinas...

Holiday Musings and a permanent solution to rares
He's not interested in the items for his own sake. He's interested in bringing the failed real-world paradigm of communism into the Runescape environment. It's not about money or desires on his own part (according to his own words here). It's about taking special items (and the implied special status) away from old-time players (the bourgeoisie)and giving them to the masses (the proletariat). He wants to strip any meaning of longevity or seniority or wealth from holiday rares. He then wants to make the devalued substitute items available to everyone. And he naively believes that his proposals are new and haven't been considered (and rejected) by TPTB. It's obvious you don't know why. But that doesn't mean other people don't want to buy them. Many do. Your proposals don't add anything to the game at all - they only take away aspects of the game others enjoy. You are mostly correct in your first paragraph, and considering the amount of replies I've been getting on this topic, I think my suggestion as a whole is fairly new. Sure, people have complained about holiday items before, but not with a well-written and well-thought-out (no comments, Kevin) post. And as far as I can remember, it hasn't had as deep discussion as we've been having on this topic. And no, they do add something to the game, they allow everyone to enjoy what only a select few can. My proposals add plenty, and take away nothing. You don't need to have meaning of longevity or seniority or wealth for your own selfish needs, other players having these does not affect US in any way, unless we are immoral and selfish enough to strip enjoyment from players we don't even know. My friend recently got a solo Armadyl hilt from Kree'arra. He decided to give it to his brother, so he could have one too. I wasn't angry that his brother received an Armadyl godsword, I was happy. I thought to myself, "Great! Now Han has an AGS too, just like us! Now he can enjoy it and benefit from its power."

Quest 150
These days, there's only 1 quest each month, or none (like february...) so it HAS to come out in March. Otherwise Easter quest = 150th quest. That would be a major kick to the Easter Eggs. And a major kick in my private parts... rofl I think that's what beriorn meant ;) Moving away from talking about testicles... I'd like to say that I hope this quest is TRULY epic, and will be something as we have never seen before. I enjoyed WGS a lot, and if number 150 can top it, I wonder what the future for quests will be. I hope that 150 is a true EPIC and that the following quests are more challenging and have deeper and more interesting storylines. I also hope that they reveal more map area this year. Last year they revealed about 2 spaces... big deal. So far we've had a couple areas revealed this year, and I really hope they continue with that... one a month would be great. The main RuneScape continent's been unfinished for around 10 years now, and it really needs to be completed so we can see the release of the next continent... most likely the Eastern Lands. I know this was supposed to be upgrade year, but to me "upgrading" means finishing the unfinished without adding new things. And, well... the map's unfinished. Runecrafting is unfinished. Many quest storylines are unfinished. Fix some of them. :) Also, in regards of the Soul altar... I hope it's released this year, even if it's near the end I'll be pleased. There was a THREE YEAR span between the death and blood altars, but law was released just a year before death. Jagex can't let this time pattern continue. Runecrafting was the first skill released with RuneScape 2, and so far they've made... OK you know what, I've got 2045 total level and I forgot how many they've made without finishing the first one. Ridiculous. They really need to get the soul altar released so runecrafting can be labeled complete. I don't want to be waiting until 2010 or 2011 for it... or, Guthix forbid, 2012 or beyond.

Holiday Musings and a permanent solution to rares
A most logical post (in my opinion). Thanks for your input. And yes, the main point of my idea is making these items accessible to everyone... just removing the price tags, finite supplies, and inability of new players to get old untradeable holiday items.

I have a feeling you're the one who missed out. And who wants a hat everyone has? I do. Who wants a hat no one has? I don't. Who wants to waste a large amount of money on a hat with no use whatsoever? I don't know why anyone would.

The Last Frontier of Runecrafting: The Soul Altar
Interesting comment about the ice, but if you'll notice the last two altars were DEEP UNDERGROUND. I think the soul altar will follow that pattern, and I agree it will probably be in the desert. For some very odd reason it seems to fit, although from a logical standpoint it makes no sense. We've already got an altar in an icy area and that's Lunar. I have a feeling the next desert quest (perhaps 150?!) will reveal the Soul altar in a HUGE DANGEROUS CAVERN below Menaphos. :)

The True World Map? Post your findings! [Updated 2014]
Hey guys. Some more locations for you. See that map patch south of POH render? Those are random events. There's also a small cage near the middle... not sure what that is. Top-left corner: Beehives random event Top-right corner: Pinball Bottom-left corner: Gravedigger Bottom-right corner: Pete's Candlesticks (I think... I've never had this event, and it was discontinued before I ever saw it) I asked one of my friends and he was able to get me a picture of it... so hopefully one of you will recognize it:

About Timmy and the Hacker
IP bans are useless, because all you need to do is turn off your router and turn it back on. Jagex already knows about it as they actually showed a response from them on the news report. I wonder if they've neglected to ban him because of PR as previously mentioned.

Holiday Musings and a permanent solution to rares
The biggest problem I see with these types of items is that an unlimited number cannot be obtained. I liked the suggestion further up of an NPC selling them for an extremely high price. That's fine - but as long as there is a constant supply. I say the same for the untradeables. Also, please stop posting about the GP cap. It is irrelevant to ANYTHING we are discussing because it is so incredibly easy to overcome, both with certificate-type items or an easy change of the internal coding.
