  1. WRT Jagex reworking game mechanics to influence player behavior; I believe they got it mostly right with the new challenges system. By offering a proverbial carrot (extra XP) to encourage players to try different training methods, it helps break up the pure grind that trying to train either in the fastest, cost-efficient, and/or profitable ways can lead to. I doubt it can breathe life back into moribund content such as Trouble Brewing--There needs to be a critical mass of players willing and able to be pursue these activities at any time of the day or night in order for them to have a chance of becoming viable. But for a player grinding their way around Ape Atoll to be encouraged to check out the agility pyramid or arena, may introduce them to content they've never explored due to "poor efficiency" and find they're enjoying the activity and meeting new friends. The problems I do see is that too many of the challenges remain fairly mundane. Smith 200 adamant bars or burn 30 magic logs or whatnot--Pretty much the same thing we've done (using other materials) since the day we completed the initial Runescape tutorial. Secondly, this is an update I think should have been extended to F2P as well. Why not encourage them to also explore the Great Orb Project or Dungeoneering or other content available to them that they may have overlooked while fishing lobs on Karamja for days on end?
  2. True. But when you can log into any world f2p or p2p, head to the entrance of the G/E at any time day or night and get spammed by at least two bots advertising gold trading sites, usually by players whose screen names look like a cat jumped on the keyboard. When you can't even see the ground at the red chinchompas for all the bots laying traps (see also: green dragons, yaks) there is a major problem which shouldn't take an unreasonable amount of effort to fix: Hmm, player signs up for new account or logs into existing acct from new IP changes password and s/n then heads straight to G/E, does no trading, training or anything other than posting a cryptic message every 2 seconds. Let's flag this account for review! If anything, they seem to be working on applying a band-aid to a mortal flesh wound in announcing that hunters will soon be able to access instanced hunting grounds alone or with invited friends. I'm not suggesting that all content be rolled back to the release of the Animal Magnetism quest, and nothing since. That would be irritating. But how about trying to analyze what has really caused the members, and total users to plummet over the past couple years and try to re-ignite that interest within the community. The added clan support has helped to an extent, but may have also created new problems by sequestering the most socially active players into their own citadels, leaving the main game filled with solo'ers, afk'ers and bots. For all the improvements to the game, the game engine, and graphics since then, there have also been plenty of things introduced that have removed too much of the challenge of the game. Remember when you could get stuck in the dungeon beneath Entrana, and if you forgot teleport runes and the means of making armor, you'd have to take the portal into the deep wilderness unarmed, and with no prayer points? Now you've got unlimited free home teleports to bail you out, and confirming things in the Lost City quest guide, apparently the portal now sends you to the safety of Draynor. Sure it makes the game more n00b beginner friendly, but aside from taking on Nex or one of the other major bosses in the game, there's very little sense of peril involved, thus less to become emotionally drawn toward. Oh no! I lost my dragon platebody at the Queen Black Dragon! I only have 10-15 minutes to use the home tele to Port Sarim and walk 2-3 screens over to my gravestone to retrieve it and everything else I was carrying. Guess I'd better hurry while I make that pot of coffee if I don't want to have to re-purchase my gear!
  3. Pay a relatively small amount of real world currency to a RWTer; get lots of Runescape GP in return, or skill levels, quests completed, or other rewards (IE Fire cape) Pay a relatively small amount of real world currency to Jagex; get extra cash, Xp lamps, rare items (both useful and cosmetic) Nope. No similarity at all! /s
  4. Please don't support RWT whether sanctioned by Jagex or not! Otherwise we'll all be expected to pony up more cash instead of questing to eventually visit Prifddinas or any other content that's long overdue for an update. Insight Venture Partners is killing the goose that laid the golden eggs with all these microtransactions. What's more, they appear to be fully aware of it. They seem to be doing everything possible to extract cash from long-time playing members, taking their very sweet time on seriously addressing the bot issue. They only appear to want short-term return on investment, knowing they're accelerating the demise of the overall game. I claim the SoF spins most everyday simply because they're there. I would take the moral stand of refusing to even use the free spins, but then I have to keep dismissing the popup upon login, and let's face it, free stuff is nice, especially when faced with an unlevel playing field against scammers, botters, gold farmers, and bug exploiters. Technically, I may be violsting the rules somewhat in that I've long since abandoned my own character and now help my hubby with skilling so he can focus on PvM/Dungeoneering. We hope the game will one day return to the fun, hopelessly addictive game our kids introduced us to 6 years ago. But we know that's probably wishful thinking. The massive price fluctuations caused by Jagex's own hand over the past couple years such as inflating values of climbing boots and furies overnight, while causing a crash with Seers' and Archers' rings for instance is even more annoying to me than yesterdays erasing of my advantage in completing the Dealing With Scabaras quest. Again, please don't provide any financial support to Jagex/IVP beyond your regular monthly membership. I'm tempted to cancel hubby's account due to the breach of trust over RWT and no advertisements for members.
  5. I can't seem to get past the talking to 5 penguins task. I've spoken to all unnamed penguins I could find, but each dialog ends with still needing one more... The conversations each open differently, I've got: Psst! ... Comrade! ... Any Bright Ideas ... Hi, I was just curious ... So you ever think... Am I missing a penguin somewhere, or am I stuck in a glitch?
  6. Since a very large percentage of the ~200 million accounts are bots, it seems plausible that they may be using their own software to automate account creation as opposed to using the official Jagex client.
  7. This post is mostly speculative as I have only been on Runescape for six years, thus have no firsthand knowledge of how the early tradable holiday items were perceived. One other major difference between partyhats and fish masks AFAIK is that there probably wasn't much thought at the time that partyhats would someday become extremely valuable. They were extremely common when they were released, not worth anything, and were just a fun holiday diversion. A player at the time may have grabbed a single one from the first Christmas cracker they got as a drop, ignoring all others that followed. The more tenacious may has pulled crackers until they had the complete set. However, with limited bank space, partyhats would be dropped to make room for an ever increasing number of weapons, armor, tools, supplies, and quest items. Sure, there were probably a few merchants who foresaw the potential profits to be reaped over time after they were discontinued, but your average player probably thought of them as useful to collect as ashes. Contrast that with the fish mask where Jagex is trumpeting the fact that it will be discontinued and thus will become rarer as well as its intrinsic high-alch value. No one will drop a fish mask on the ground to free up bank space. It is, from the get go, something to either hoard or sell off in the GE. Jagex seems to be hoping for the former, that folks will buy extra spins to amass several fish masks. Unfortunately, this puts Jagex and those buying extra spins at cross purposes--As for every additional fish mask acquired through purchased spins, the greater the supply, and in turn the lower the relative price will become. Jagex could actually deliver the final death blow to Runescape while making a tidy profit by offering partyhats as an ultra-rare drop someday. Lots of players would buy hundreds of spins in hopes of scoring one, and a few thousand new phats would come into the GE, and the price would crash! At that point, it wouldn't merely just be riots in Varrock and Falador; Jagex HQ would need to hire extra security to deal with all the non-virtual threats they'd receive. By advertising a new "rare" item on the SoF, they're simply trying to have their cake and eat it too.
  8. You should still be able to talk to which is enough to retrieve your seal if you forget it before a teleport. ITA though, with the recent update which made Keldagrim more accessible, Lunar Isle should have also become a lot easier to get to via this quest.
  9. Yes, it may have been more satisfying to return it to its rightful owner. But one should consider: Arrav was teleported to points unknown after you did damage and he gave you information Arrav's still is under the control of another entity anyway.. And even without those two challenges, returning the item in such a way to actually benefit him may be a bit complicated, perhaps requiring a rather high crafting level?
  10. Never been hacked in the 3 years I've played RS. I don't like this idea on the general principle that I wouldn't want a proprietary password generator. Imagine if the idea gained traction and suddenly you ended up with a USB dongle for most every website, bank account, work-related database, etc. You'd have more dongles than conventional keys on your keyring. If you lost your dongle(s) then it falls back to how well you manage any sort of "master password(s)" For someone who'd need this in the first place, my guess is they'd use an easy to guess master password, and someone would have carte blanche access to everything they accessed online, while the rightful owner was locked out of everything. Honestly, I don't even use an RS bank pin. The anti-mouse tracking feature is annoying, and tighter security than even my primary bank account! I don't open unsolicited file attachments, surf for cheats/cracks/hacks, I regularly scan for spyware, and have javascript/flash disabled by default, running Firefox. Perhaps I might want/tolerate such extra security measures if I needed privileged access to sites of national security interest. But again, I don't need such precautions for even my own finances, and especially not for an MMORPG!
  11. But how about Koschei the Deathless in his third form during the Fremennik Trials? Is he hitting at speed 9? Been a while but seemed his attacks might have been faster than every 0.6 seconds, perhaps 0.3 seconds? but certainly not infinite.
  12. A couple corrections: you only need four supercomposts if you're only farming herbs, as My Arm's patch doesn't require it. hat's moot though as I farm limps, and will grow strawberries or better in the allotments, and will harvest/plant belladonna while at Draynor. Or 5 Supercomposts at Draynor, 4 each for Ardy, Cath, & Phas, and none for Trollheim. Fishing guild teleport is much closer than Ardougne tele. But be sure to wear gloves (not a combat bracelet) if also farming Belladonna though. You can now use grimy herbs (and allotments/fruit/flowers/etc.) on the leprechaun and he will note them for you!
  13. Had to chose "Other" as well, since weight reducing gear != nothing, which is what I wear most of the time. Otherwise I like to grab any stat boosting accessories for whichever skill I'm training (I.E. rabbit's foot/lumberjack for wc'ing) Otherwise if doing something that doesn't involve much travel such as fishing, I might get a bit more creative/cool. Did a hybrid ringmaster/santa outfit today, might do full lunar robes tomorrow. Every now and then I change my base clothes/hairstyle as well especially after updates, so that I look nice even without anything else on.
  14. I'd be more interested in specific breakdowns of time/how experience is earned. I spent (wasted?) loads of time making pies in the cooking guild, before fully realizing how much more efficient fishing/cooking is. Mind you at Lvl 82 cooking, I'm not even 1/4 of the way to a skill cape (in any skill) But would Jagex be able to at some point be able to divide the cooking skill into two (grilling/frying vs. baking?) and apply past relevant experience to either skill? Or is that too ephemeral for them to bother tracking? As to overall efficiency. Most players probably overestimate their efficiency, meaning they'd underestimate time played strictly by levels. Time spent merchanting, sorting your bank, travelling without using runes, following a treasure trail, burning seaweed into soda ash, etc. You are not earning any experience. If you don't limit your in-game chatting to times of active skilling, then you're losing efficiency there as well. But to muddy the waters even more, spending the time merchanting to buy pure essence for rc'ing and training mining on iron or granite instead would most likely be more efficient than powermining and crafting all your own ess. So to that end, does it really matter how much time you spend in trying to achieve any goal? RS is not really a game you can win. If your goal is merely to get every skill cape, a fire cape, all godswords, etc. and retire afterward, then you're probably so focused on the destination that you aren't enjoying the journey very much, if at all. Forcing yourself to spend weeks chopping willows in Draynor just to get a WC cape in the least amount of time possible is probably going to lead to major burnout. Train your cat in the rat pits or visit the party room to break up the monotony. You won't be earning beaucoup xp, but you might make some new friends and have some fun along the way.
  15. Quite handy! I have my home in Yanille (eliminating the need for a Watchtower Portal) Directly in front of the default garden/portal one gets, I have a quest hall (Glory at the ready in first room) To the immediate east are the three teleports to the east (Varrock, Canifis, Lumbridge) and to the immediate west I have the western teleports. (Camelot, Ardougne, Falador) I pretty much razed my entire house once I got a high enough level to build most rooms I wanted, and planned it very carefully to get teleports, altars, and such very close access, while throwing the less useful rooms (bedrooms, throne rooms, etc.) off to the back, yet keeping a very balanced, neat layout.. Unfortunately, the design I made put the formerly useless telescope against a wall, so I ended up adding another study to the west of my garden/portal just for use in the shooting stars. It's convenient, but totally ruins the efficient aesthetic I was going for. Oh well, soon I'll blow even more money redoing the house yet again! Grrr! Glad someone got the joke. Still scratching my head on that one.. Master of Science in Social Work? Magneto-Static Surface Wave? Mission Specific SoftWare? Multi-Site Steel War? Google isn't even helping me figure that one out I'm afraid. EDIT: Okay, the latter one is the reference. Still don't get it. Guess you've got to be into PvP.. Never heard the term before..
  16. What I would like to see is a screen on the user interface that could show a summary of which "chores" are ready to be done. Much like the way you can see the time remaining for ToG by viewing the quest info in the UI. Only it would include battlestaves, Bork, MtK, seaweed, sand, etc. I so hate visiting a site only to find out 24 hours haven't fully elapsed since my last visit, yet in another 10 minutes or so I could get my sand. I do battlestaves whenever I want to knock out a crafting level--recently met goal of 80 (crafting glories FTW) so haven't bothered too much with it lately. When doing that I'll pick up the 80 seaweed (one area which the interface needs some serious streamlining. How about offering me 80 noted seaweed in one click? I'd pay a premium of 5-10gp per, really! And too often I'm told he's out of stock though I was pretty sure a full day had passed. I don't bother with pineapples anymore, farming is high enough to where I have plenty of coconut shells to use for supercompost. Haven't done much at MtK since the G.E. caused maple prices to crash. Not huge on merchanting, and have plenty of coal for my own needs and fish monks/sharks as I need them. Will probably return when I need nests for sara brews. I tried to remember to do Bork daily, but lost its charm for me after getting killed on one occasion, rushed back to claim the drops from my gravestone only to be informed that I couldn't re-enter the portal until tomorrow. Grrrrrr! Jade Vine, I alternate between growing/slaying religiously and forgetting about for a week or two. Been mining stars with the help of the [star Find] cc, enjoying the mostly cooperative group mining for now, but will probably tire of it soon. Sand is another one of those that regularly I'm certain 24 hours have passed but Bert insists I already saw him. Thankfully with my PoH in Yanille, he's easy to get to. So how about it Jagex, make a screen with Red/Green indicators for our "chores" to know when we can go back.
  17. Just put in order #360. Kinda meh on the idea for myself. but hubby is an avid sci-fi/fantasy reader and hopelessly addicted to RS. So this takes care of one Christmas present. And a 1 in 36 chance of a signed copy 1 day past release.. Not too terrible odds and would make the gift all that much sweeter.
  18. Steel Key Ring from One Small Favour quest can no longer be dropped (Destroy is in its place) Perhaps a suicide method might work to obtain a duplicate though. New character doesn't have the Karamja 3 gloves, so that would be a little tricky to test in the meantime. Annoyed that an item awarded specifically to aid in bank organization is now a forced 1-item, as that defeats basic bank organization strategy.
  19. The guide for the ranging guild indicates that you'd receive 1 ticket per point scored from the competition judge. You actually receive 1 ticket per 10 points scored. Therefore, the maximum possible tickets received per round is 200, not 2000.
