At my current job, I'm 2 weeks into a 3 week install. Sunday, April 27th I flew out to Oklahoma at about 3 pm, got in at 10pm. Got to the hotel at 11 pm. Since then, I've been working "12 hour shifts" non-stop, which is to say that I leave the hotel at 5:30a.m., get to the mill at 6:00a.m., and work there until about 6:30p.m. or later. Then I get the "privilege" to go eat out for dinner, which means I get back to the hotel at around 8:30 - I barely get 8 hours sleep. Even after "taking off" 3 hours to go to church on the 4th, I still put in 84 hours the first week. Yesterday was my first day off in 2 weeks, and I left the mill "early" on Saturday after putting in 9 hours that day, bringing my total work for a short week to 73 hours. I have to go back to the mill again for 4 days this week, right now my flight out is scheduled early Friday A.M. Unfortunately the project is behind schedule and I might have to extend my trip a few days, meaning I'll work (at least partially) through my 4th weekend in a row. I'm salaried, the company doesn't pay me overtime for the extra 40+ hours I work these weeks. My boss told me I was "overpaid" at my last meeting, and I won't get a pay increase in the next year. I can't quit until I've put in 1 year with the company or else they'll seize money from my bank account for my signing bonus and moving expenses. My offer letter wasn't very specific on what I'd be doing for the company, but it said I'd be traveling for work from 0-10% of my time. This year it's been about 60% of my time, and when I travel I work these long weeks. The guys I work with are [wagon], and the reason we work these ridiculous hours are so they can keep their projects under budget - instead of bringing in an extra 1-2 engineers to have full coverage at a more "reasonable" 50-60 hours per week, they keep their costs low so they can continue this death march. Also, despite being in their 50s-60s, they still act like they're in high school and do all kinds of petty shit like gossip. 6 more weeks of torment until my 1 year is up... TNPW post something to cheer me up.
