Ancient Staff + Dragon Defender is probably your best bet, failing which Dragon Battleaxe + Dragon Defender > Verac's Flail > Guthan's Spear I personally used Ancient Staff + Rune Defender before and it wasn't really that great, though, but it'd definitely be better than a vine whip.
