I can't help you much with Barrows, but here's a quote from JacTise for making money. There's almost always a money thread on the first page of Help and Advice, so check there first. And I'm not sure how useful this guide is, but it may help for Barrows. It has tips and tricks about using Barrage+Sally and may answer your question.

Any skill can be linked to combat. You smith weapons, slay for weapons, mine for ore to smith weapons...etc. Herblore shouldn't be any different. I don't remember the exact quote from MMG, but it was something along the lines of "Get better or GTFO"

Most of us answering this thread are F2P as well. Our logic is, you *probably* can't make money fast enough to offset the cost of smithing platebodies. In which case superheating may be more cost-efficient.

Well, I'm not going to look into the figures and exp rates, that's Grimy's job, but Superheating is probably the best way to train smithing in F2P, unless you've got a spare 20m or so. And even then, you might still want to superheat, so you can use that money towards better things. And yeah, Magic exp.

Actually, you'd use 22.5% of your special bar. And never trust the KB. Use RSW, TipIt, or RHQ. Here's some uses from RSW:
