Tip.It Times - 13 May 2012
As ever, I enjoyed the Times editorials. Most often, they reveal something of the game I hadn't considered. However, The Floating Pen might as well have been reading my mind! Y'see, I've just had an imposed break of two months from Runescape (RSI, hooda thunk!). I came back on the 1st May and dived straight back into the game. Did a quick home tele to Lumby to get my bearings and landed on a lodestone. Having missed the update I had no idea what was happening, the pop up map just befuddled me. If was FAB. I was right back to being a newbie, in Lumby, not sure what was going on. I resisted reading the updates on the RS homesite for a whole week. Talk about a trip down memory lane! The best part was that once again I had to ask random folks for advice, and as the first time round, everyone was helpful. The MM was resolutely back in my fave RPG. Then I did read the updates. GREEN PHATS!!!!! you've gotta be kidding me. So back to the grind, the AFKing, the reporting of ad bots, blah, blah. It's always going to be hard to feel the same level of immersion that was felt when everything was really new. TBH, I am a bit of a wuss when it comes to quests, I do make use of the guides. But not as often as I'd like, as even some of the quests are almost formulaic. It's just not necessary. Following into the editorial by Alg, I'm not sure that opening up the fabled 'Eastern Lands' or a blank map would be enough to bring back the same level of immersion. There has to be something else. Something really radical. If I had any good ideas, I wouldn't be posting them on a fansite, I'd be relocating to Jagex central, revitalising the game we love. As that's not going to happen, it's back to the grind, the AFKing, the reporting of ad bots, blah, blah. Patiently waiting for the revolution that will bring about NEWSCAPE

Too Much XP?
Cheers guys, I guess we don't have to bow down to Guthix and his wisdom of balance.

Too Much XP?
This may well be a hyperthetical question, but can you get too much XP in certain skills, so that you are unable to attain 99 in all skills? For instance, supposing I had 99 in WC, Fletch, Magic and RC, and chose to make use of those skills to alch for the cash to gain 99 in construction, herb and prayer. Could I get so much XP in the first four skills that I hit an upper limit on the amount of total XP available, thereby being unable to attain 99 in the last three skills?

Tip.It Times - 19th February 2012
I'm not sure why, but it seems that a large proportion of the articles in the Times are about changing something. It might get called 'rebalancing' or 'potential development', but essentially, a lot of the articles are about some level of dissatisfaction. I know we can all agree that there are some tweeks that we'd all like to see, but I feel that some articles regarding 'improvements' really belong in the suggestions forum on the RSOF. Nevertheless, the first two articles do raise some interesting points. Cheers for posting. The third article - 'End of Innocence', well, there's nothing new in what's being said. I'd take a guess that a fair number of players have had some 'uncomfortable' suggestion made to them at some point in their RS career. However, I think it's a difficult issue to tackle. Yes, there's quick chat. Yes, there's info for parents. And yes, online grooming and solicitation has been around since dial up. Hands up if you've reported someone for indecently proposing. Anyone? To me, that sort of thing is far more abhorrent than website advertising or racist comments. Maybe it's just something you don't see so often on P2P, at least I don't.

Ethics and Morality
In what may well be a vain attempt to bring this topic away from the flame and back to the OP subject matter.... There is no such thing as morality. All actions deemed moral/immoral derive from a biological imperative. Applying any moralistic value to any action is an intrinsically immoral action, as it necessitates the construct of an ethical framework that all participants are aware of, not necessarily having agreed upon (although that would be nice). It is impossible for all potential participants within the framework to be consulted, rendering the framework invalid. For example. There's me, a sweet little trout swimming up stream to fulfil my biological imperative. And lo! I spot a tasty snack along the way. So I try to eat the worm. However, it's attached to a hook, and now I'm drowning in fresh air!!! All because a human followed another biological imperative to consume protein. If I had the command of intelligent thought, I may consider this a fair action, I took the risk, and got caught. Having been caught, I have enabled some other being to fulfil their biological imperative, as such, my life and death has meaning and value in this big wide world. However, I might also think that this was an unfair act. No-one consulted me or my kind to let me know what the rules were. If they had I might have decided that sticking a worm on a hook to trick me is in effect an act of war on my kind. I could justify my retribution as a valid action, for trying to make my kind safe from those that try to kill us. Or even as a valid action on behalf of the nation of worms. After all, they are cruelly snatched from their homes, impaled and then drowned! It's barbaric! However, there is a valid argument that also states that there is a need for the construct of an ethical framework which allows moralist values to exist. Unfortunately, it leads to all kinds of trouble. If you take Rousseau's idea that all should have an equal say in government, there will always be a number of people who would vote for extreme policies. However, the majority would plump for the middle ground. As such populist demands/ideals would prevail. This kind of governing would benefit the majority, with the extremes being in the minority. Over time there might be slight shifts to the left or right, but a common ground would be found. Having found a common ground, there are numerous benefits to society as a whole. The problems we have today regarding emotive issues such as religious practices, military policy, economic globalisation etc, are problems because although it may well be the folks on the extreme edges of society strongly disagreeing with the majority, there are so many of us on the planet, that even at the extremes of religious intolerance and political idealism, it's a huge number of people. And a huge number of people will always make a lot of noise. So...we back on topic?

Tip.It Times - 5th February 2012
I beg to differ. It is about DIY. Have I misunderstood the phrase 'collected by members'? So would users of these servers just sit around until someone else attained the levels required to supply cannonballs, chins and yews? Or would they DIY to become the suppliers. Would there be an endless release of 'new reset servers'? After all, once the reset server has been up and running for a period of time, it will become feasible to 'buy' a fletching level. It's probable that resource prices on the reset servers will never match the ones available on the current servers. Once players have attained the levels to supply the market, found those rares, whatever, will not the same problem begin to occur? That essentially the economy would be a culmination of X amount of running time. The only difference would be there wasn't the impact of botting or glitches etc to alter the pricing. When I wrote this... ...did you not recognise that I was pointing out that players can choose their direction already? I was merely giving the example of my choice of how I play the game to illustrate one potential direction that could be taken without the need for reset servers. I feel it demonstrates a pro (The Sinatra factor) and a con (lack of master capes). Other than DIY, I don't really see how it would offer a very different direction. Players would still want/not to train efficiently. Players would still want/not to do quests. There would still be a demand for your chins, lol. Aren't Jagex trying to do something for new members to offset the impact of however perverted the current economy is? There is a nice cash reward for the completion of tasks in the new Taverley/Burthorpe update. As a brand new member, it's not something to be sniffed at, and certainly wasn't available to players of our longevity. Fair enough, the server hoping is unavailable in the scenario painted by the author, having reread the piece today the concept of having one character that can switch between pre and post reset servers is a little clearer.

With regard to "Rebooting Runescape" There's no doubt that several years of unchecked (to an extent) botting, 76King, treasure hunting, etc has had an impact on the economy of Runescape. However, to have some kind of alternate server for folks that want to replay their pixels from the beginning without the resource stockpile on GE seems a little extreme. You can do that right now. Just create a new character, and don't use the GE. One of the great things about Runescape is that you can choose to play the game anyway you like. You can be a quester, a skiller, a pure, whatever. It's about how you CHOOSE to play the game. YOU have the power to decide that you will only smith the ores you've mined. YOU have the power to decide which quests you would like to do. No-one HAS to 'buy' their levels to compete. Equally, how would a double economy work? Take for example a Robin Hood hat. It's a rare in that it's only available from a treasure trail. What's it selling at on GE now? 4 mill plus change? But what would it be worth on an alternate server? 10 mill because there are fewer in the game or 2 mill because folks aren't earning from their skilling as much? Or look at resources. What would Nats sell at? Would there be any to buy? What's to stop someone switching servers and buying and selling resources and rares in the economy that has the best price. OH right, CHOICE. The thing that came to my mind when reading this article is the unspoken message that playing the game from scratch, getting all your own resources implies a 'truer' version of game play. Or for those of you with a cynical mind, buying 10K yews ATM is almost akin to supporting the previous botting plague. Just in case anyone wants to try to play the game gathering all your own resources, check out my stats. I've bought maybe 10K mith ores when I was doing shattered heart, but the rest is my very own clicking. Then check out the date I registered here, it was about 6 months after I created my character. Sometimes I play for half an hour a day, sometimes I have nothing else to do and play for 8 hours. It probably works out as an 'average' player. You'll note I have no 99's <_< I made the choice early on in my RS career that I would grind my levels, not buy them. Are you sure you still want to do that?

Virtual stealing, court convicts
But the court didn't rule on 'ownership'. The court ruled that the item had an "intrinsic" value. This was exemplified by the lengths the two perpetrators went to, to obtain the said items. As such, previous court decisions could not be overturned on the grounds that a theft didn't occur. Had the courts ruled that as it was a virtual item and so a theft couldn't occur, the assault charges would also have been over turned. In other words, the victim placed a personal value on the items as he had spent X amount of time to obtain them. The perpetrators agreed that there was a value to the items, but as they couldn't be bothered to spend X amount of time obtaining them, they committed a criminal act. I have a feeling that this went to appeal as this was considered, in effect, armed robbery. That is a very serious crime, one which will stay on the perpetrators records for a long time, will diminish any future job prospects, university acceptance, mortgage applications, you name it. That may seem a little harsh, to be dubbed an armed robber before hitting puberty. However, how long before the 'successful' perpetrators moved on to obtaining real goods with knives? Besides, if there isn't an intrinsic value in RS items, then give me a Phat for 1gp, lol.

price of the new flasks?
I wondered about the refilling of the flasks too, I mean, if you are limited to making 50 flasks a day, there has to be some method by which the flasks become defunct. I'm guessing it might be something similar to the way essense pouches degrade or something similar to how say a bracelet of clay breaks after so many uses. As for having a bank full of 1 and 2 dose flasks, well, won't those get used to decant a flask all the way up to 6?

Virtual stealing, court convicts
I think this was the crux of the appeal. That virtual items are intrinsically 'yours'. The convicted individual had appealed on the grounds that as the goods 'stolen' were virtual, he could not be found guilty of theft, as they don't really exist. He didn't appeal the 'mugging' aspect of the crime. The interesting precedent for me is that the goods have an "intrinsic value". RWT's give a real world value to virtual goods, thereby imbuing the virtual goods/cash an intrinsic value.

Virtual stealing, court convicts
I couldn't believe this when I first read it, a young boy bullied for his Runescape loot. http://thechronicleherald.ca/world/57498-stealing-virtual-world-theft-real-life-top-dutch-court-rules Good to see the courts taking this sort of thing seriously

Life Changing Experiences
I know some of the younger forum users will have a little trouble believing this, but once upon a time there were no such things as mobile 'phones, the internet or games consuls! It's true! Back in those days, I could remember about 70 folks 'phone numbers, left the house to meet up with people without even calling them first and spent a lot of time reading. The life changing moment for me was when I got a ZX81 kit. A home build computer (I use the term loosely, as 16K RAM does little more than count, fast) It took me 6 weeks to solder all the components in, then another two to work out how to type my name. However, it didn't take long before I was programming very simple games into the 'magic box' as my Father called it. That was it, I was hooked on the idea of playing games. I moved on through to the Spectrum (with colour!), the the BeeB thang, consuls like the Mega drive and Nintendo64 and hand helds like the dubiously named GameBoy. I can honestly say, I've played a computer game every day of my life since about 1981/1982. That's about 30 years of gaming. I've shot 'em up, driven round the world, bounced around like Trigger on amphetamines through futuristic worlds, delved into dungeons and put Bruce Lee to shame with my pixel kicks. I've been ridiculed by my more 'serious' friends, but played on. I've been disciplined by my boss, but played on. I've had arguments with my partner about my game time, but played on. And when I get that comfortable high backed chair in a nursing home, I hope I'll be playing on. :shades:

Tip.It Times - 1st January 2012
Doh! <3: I'm sure the editing was AWSOME, but I did really mean the authors. In real life, I'm not blond, but I have this inner blond pixie... if only there was a support group.

Tip.It Times - 1st January 2012
First and foremost... Phat's off to the Tip.it Times staff. I really didn't expect issues to be released over the holiday period, thank you all. Hamataro article - I was one of the participants. Or at least I filled in a survey. I also was surprised by the results. For one thing, I expected the average age to be lower than it appeared. Using the data for folks that posted in November seems reasonable, but maybe if the post count was upped it would have changed the result. Just look at my joining date and number of posts! I'm a long time lurker on the forums, but rarely feel the need to add a comment, often because "yeah, me too" or "I think the same" seems pointless. However, I think that the criteria seems sound (I'm not a statiisticion, so feel free to quibble) but I do wonder if the criteria was applied to, say around a major update like bot nuke day for instance, when the forums seemed busy prior and post the update, we might get a very different demographic resulting. Then again, my expectations are based on my in game experience, not my forum experience. Monkeychee - If only! More of this kind of article, and we will get a mention in the 'Computer game urban myth' dictionary! I loved it. Let's hope Jagex is watching. (As an aside, I've often thought that if Jagex placed some random event/item drop/conversation without making the event/item/drop/conversation public knowledge, it would be a VERY intriguing aspect of the game) Jaffy1 - I too have a whole world of D&D from RS, y'no, those irritating things like work and family, lol. So I also want to train efficiently. I used to spend hours working out drop rates, best places to smith, etc, but ended up spending less time playing that working out the best way to play! Kudos to the 'effiacienados' that take the time out and publish their findings, they are the unsung heros of any fansite. But it can become obsessive. After all, I'm not taking time out between the clicks to chat to anyone, or even glance at the DVD I might have put on. Which misses the point of the game for me. I really don't mind if I plan to run laws for an hour, but spend half of it directing someone with a clue. After all, when I first started RS, so many people answered my noob questions, I'd be doing them a disservice if I didn't answer some myself (to misquote a fave book of mine) All in all, a great start to the Times 2012.

Things that annoy the HELL out of you.
In RS, the cowards that PK at the air obelisk, ffs, grow a pair and go to real wildy IRL, pedants. I know, I know, everyone like to show off their knowledge, but if a sentence begins "actually...." you know it's gonna be painful

POH: Tip.It's House Catalog?
Ok, so I've got a pic of my house layout, the rooms in blue are the ones I have, the yellow are the ones I'm aiming for. I've also gone for something aesthetic rather than practical, so some of the doors are in the wrong places, but by the time I came to change my layout, I had some stuff I didn't want to move, so I had to work around that. I was going for a Country House type thing, with an east and west wing. This is what the entrance looks like to give you an idea (sorry it's small) [/url]

[ARCHIVE] Spelling and grammar corrections - completed posts
I wondered if you might think about a little clarification to one of the tasks? The Seers elite task X1 - Make an admiral pie. You need to assemble to pie in Seers, including cooking the fish. I made the mistake of cooking the fish in Catherby, no doubt someone else will too. At least I hope so  or it's a bit embarrassing. My only defence is that as you catch tuna in Catherby..., OK that's feeble too, lol Keep up the good work guys CJ [Crew edit: I've made a slight change to the task to reflect this and you have been credited :) thanks! ~Oct]
