  1. To some extent it does. It'll cause a chain reaction due to it being Jagex' main money maker. Micro Payments just slowed this down. First off, they'll cut staff as theres less players to cater for. This will eventually lead to less content and less happy players. Less customer to buy spins and cosmetics. Less members. Then they'll cut staff again on repeat untill its just servers up with maintenance. Leaving RuneScape to be milked for its last bit money. I dont really understand why they havent halved the servers so the worlds feel more full. it'll average 300-400 people then. But at the same time people will rage for loss of home worlds. The difference between it being this low in 2003-4 and now was that at that time. The player base was rising. Not droping. Not only that summers nearly over. Most children will be back in school. Most servers are going to be even more of a ghost town. Its not healthy. Im also sure some people will unsubscribe due to studies. Not as many (i didnt) but it all adds up.. So its definitely dying. It'll just be a slow progress. Lore wise, it could never been better. Combat wise, its dying The futures bright for people who enjoy skilling and quest related content. ---- Other than that if you think a game not dying is based on content and future expansion. RuneScapes got alot to come. But it will only come if they can get players back and then new players in.
  2. That's sort of the heart of the casual/hardcore divide. Do you want a game that's fun from the start or one that's only fun after you invest lots of time in it? Scape seems to have gone from the former to the latter, but has almost no few resources for newer players. From the start, the game skills and quests should be made interesting. As time goes by they'll naturaly encounter and research the rest. Such as boss' and minigames. It needs to be simple so that it gets people straight into the world whilst giving them the basics on what to do. Its based off someone with a mindset that doesnt know anything, he doesnt know if its a game he will be playing for years on end.
  3. I've always find them guys a bit annoying because loads of their 'lore' is actually speculation and theories they declare as fact; then they get all butt hurt if you have an alternate view. I bet they will cry if Jagex released a plot twist like Zaros being Barrasica Prime. And this whole time we've been high on cabbage. The pillar really was a cabbage rolling. Zammy was a rotten cabbage. That tainted a cabbage leaf of Z/Barrasica leading him only to shed a coat of cabbage away. Cabbage of Jas, Wise Old Cabbage. April Fools we nudged human heads to Og'Log to meet Bob from the tehnoobshow, fairys were just cabbages with wings, Cabbage this, Cabbage that. Everything they ever studied, ruined by cabbage. Just like the witches potion on the old Black Knights quest.
  4. In 04 it would've been odd but now adays its not, because the whole internet community has massively changed. If I started a game infamous for being complicated like Eve online I would probably ask a neutral forum site what I need to know and if its worth playing. I think it would be based off the player. If easily frustrated they'll likely leave. If they like to give things a good go they'll google.
  5. No. You can stop and go off to do other things at pretty much any point. But how would a new player know this. Would they feel that had to do what they are saying. Its harder to vision how a person would first feel entering runescape. This is an example. Its odd that he went to an outside source for help. But then again he maybe a regular reddit user and is comftable on there for gaming discussion. [/hide] Not so much, at least I don't think. For me, my help would have been to turn to the all mighty Google and searched Runescape help. Hell, that's how I found about Tip it. I wanted to learn more about mining, and I didn't know how to use Jagex's site other than logging in at the time. [hide] I think that is what Sy was getting at. Tell the new player what they need to know right now, then as they explore and decided to try, say mining, an option for a tutorial appears. Very much so, to me for the initial tutorial all you really need is: 1) Moving, camera controls and world map 2) Brief overview of skills as in covering the basic types of skills (gatherer, artisan, combat, support) and what sort of things they offer 3) Basic overview of combat (classes, weaknesses, idea of abilities with emphasis on momentum) 4) Friends list, clan chats that sort of thing. Then later tutorials as you go to use a skill can cover the details of the mining process and pickaxes or w/e. [/hide] I would also like to ask, at what point should new players learn about NIS? Right then and there, or do we get them to use the default layout a bit? Oh hot damn. I forgot about a NIS tutorial. Even more complex :')

  8. I think they are working on a new tutorial anyway. I think Mod Pips said in his reddit AMA. Cannot remember though. Either way this is the millionth rework if so.
  9. I think the bad part is that its overwhelming too. Its kind of all up in your face. As a young player coming in. With no idea about the game. That could be pretty scary and confusing.
  10. A breif explination that theres more out there will do. As you said on the end. That seems a good way to go about teaching them theres more out there. And nudging them to exploration to find and level to get there.
  11. Lol use the wand of guthix, corrupt guthix.
  12. I personaly hate to many tutorials. I think they only need to teach the basics of the FTP skills. Just like tutorial island. Everything on that island was set around what you'd first do as you play runescape. That would be mining tin and copper, fishing some shrimp. As time goes on you get smarter, naturaly learning how to advance. You'll come across the iron ore only to find you need 15 mining. Then they are likely to get 15 mining. As for becoming members. By the time someone buys members they know the game anyway. Curiousity to explore the open world is enough to keep them engaged and learn on a natural curve. Forcing them into learning about skills would be bad at this point. Because they'll not see all the random little things out there. Instead they'll be like ohh slayer. Where the hells that monster.
  13. I doubt very many people didn't buy their armour off other players. Especially considering even Mithril required 68 Smithing to make, and a full set of just Steel still required 48. A good point, but it doesn't address the argument which was being made. My point wasn't necessarily how players obtain items. My point was that the process of learning the game's mechanics has changed to the point where it's more like hand-holding. In an MMORPG like RuneScape where you've got this massive world and it's ultimately up to you where you're heading, I think you really shouldn't be offered anything more than a gentle push in the right direction. Apart from anything else, if I were a new player in this massive new world, would I really want my hand holding? I'd hope that new players would be only too desperate to go out and try as many things as possible. Either way you look at it, the problem with RuneScape and player numbers isn't really on the retention side, it's actually getting new players through the door long enough to stick around. From that perspective, you're not really looking at the level of "How does this player obtain Mithril armour", you're looking at the players' very first experiences of the game. RuneScape does not make a very good first impression these days, I'm afraid, especially to completely new players. I meet quite a few new players on a weekly basis, and most don't stick with the game for more then a few days at best. Most often I hear complaints about how complicated things are / badly explained and they don't understand it. Combat especially seems to confuse the masses, now. Considering this is in F2P, which is the simplest and easiest form of RuneScape (and i'm talking the very basic, lowest of the low level content here), it's a real issue. It's only gotten worse since the Eoc and new starting areas for F2P. Not saying that Eoc or the new areas were a bad thing (far from it) but they seem to be too overwhelming and not properly explained from the perspective of a first time Rs'er, and this was never a big issue previously. If I was thrown into a game where I didn't really understand what was going on or how to do things, I can't imagine I'd stick around very long either :( Thats what I think of the current tutorial area. I would of rather a modern tutorial island and left that area alone. As for the armour. I always made my own, untill higher levels such as mith. I bought it from the shops. This was 2006 mind. When shops were great.
  14. I wouldnt mind that. What I would love is for them to do out of the current dev team is organise what their best areas of field are whether its quests or minigames etc. Organise them to what they would be working on throughout a year or 2. Then hire a team dedicated to balancing type content so that it doesnt over run update weeks tomuch. Tweaks would annoy people if released to much instead of actual new updates. Then on from here, hire a team to market runescape. Reaching out to new players. (they probably have that anyway). If they decided to revert EoC to help fix up the mess it left (dead content, namely most pvp based things, minigames, weapons and armour in general, annoyance of having to spam keys just do compete efficently and so on) That could easily appeal to older players that left bringing a decent amount back into the game. Making worlds feel less dead. This would mean they actual invest back into us via micropayments money with the brand new staff dedicated to the balancing and making the game healthy again. Without cutting into current updates as they have done this year. Releasing an update every month would be decent from them. Halving the game worlds would make worlds average around 300-400 people on each world making them look more fuller and apealing. Although people may complain about crampt training spots. Even though years ago worlds were much more competitive anyway. All whilst Mod Osborne leads a team making the first real expansion. The eastern lands. I dont know why I write these things, I just would like RuneScape to be an healthy game again.
  15. What they need to do is get new players looking at the game, then get them hooked. How many games have you played where you quit because something gave you low xp? How many have you quit because of inflation? These are problems for people who are already established customers, not newbies with a huge world to spend time exploring. Concidering the player base is at a fast decline. I would advise fixing RuneScape and keeping the players happy. The loss is to fast to catch up with people coming in. Not only that. Its hardly welcoming when they game they enter is currently dead in nearly every town you go to, with minigames that are bearly used and flawed outdated skilling systems such as smithing. Heck. Bringing in people would be marketing anyway. Thats alot different from fixing content. I would feel intimidated and confused first logging into RuneScape to find buthrope its too over done. Lumbridge was perfect and relaxed. You could instantly explore your curiousity and do what you just learnt off tutorial island. As fallstar said, DIY should be encoraged. I also made all my armour from a low level. I loved that. This is also why I feel the GE and Squeel is bad for new players. They can get nearly anything at a click as long as they just won a coinbag on the squeel of fortune. Instantly geared up. Instant coins. Its not that healthy. When I first started playing, I wasnt worried about xp rates, not smithing my own armour. Heck I loved mining bronze and tin just like i learnt on tutorial island. Finding varock was exciting. I even liked making trips back and forth to smelt my bars. I think jagex current way of getting players engaged into the game is to rushed. It needs to let people enjoy what the player feel they like. - Jagex should ask players to fill in a detailed survey on what made them join and what made them stay. Off that they could base a modern tutorial. They could also do the same to see how current players feel about the games health.
  16. under the hood update we all benifited from: http://services.rune...-finding-update There was a lot more suppose to be happening than update dead areas. This was 4 years ago mind. Under the hood updates are needed for now. Not then. And even then. The engine team is completely different from the content team. Im pretty sure any tech updates back then are completely outdated. Not only that. Thats not worth a years declaration of "year of the upgrades" When very little areas of the game were actually brought back to life. Under the hood mechanics happen all the time, rarely announced. If they announce something like that its usualy to cause a more possitive hype.
  17. You know year of the upgrade was supposed to be revamping dead areas of RuneScape right?
  18. I remember that year... Nothing was really ever upgraded.
  19. Jagex could at least hire a new team of people dedicated to only balancing runescape at least, expecially with all the Micro Payment money. It would be more wise long term and possible avoid unhappy customers due to lack of content.
  20. If the number went high enough it could even be like 49.99999999% zammy. But the gap could be 400 million and rising. As long as the gaps rising, zammy gets whats coming to him.
  21. Theres not a grand amount to finish up. They could easily do that while working on the east for a few years. Concidering they use their resources well. Think of it as a good long term EoC. Without the mess up. I personaly would love to see Mod Osborne take on the eastern lands lore from scratch.
  22. If they wanted to go for gaining new strenghts. I would of invested in a team deadicated to re balancing the game. (EXP rates, Item and Gold sincs etc). Then with that I wouldn't of choose to mess up the combat. Theres plenty of popular games that have a better system and was based on that system. They dont really scratch the surface on these games. I would of focused on the quests and feel of the world. The adventure side. Less hand holding, more WGS type quests. Expansion upon story lines. For marketings sake. RS3 The whole god thing is great, Maybe a year or 2 on from that they can easily market: RuneScape: The Eastern Lands. And litteraly release a real expansion. Once they had their things together. Reaching out to the main youtubers would of been a great thing to do. People such as the Yogscast, PewDiePie, Syndicate could easily have an influence in players. Combat, For combat I would of taken on the power creep problem by adding a simple small tiered lifepoint boost. Allowing space to not be 1 hit KOd and higher level items. Magic and range items would of been released with new engaging content rather than being thrown into the game. The main problem was evertime Jagex added a monster or a quest the rewards were litteraly mostly melee based. They had a choice to balance countless times. To make it more fun and engaging. This is purely down to the developers to be creative. Jagex could at least of posted a thread saying they wanted players to submit monster mechanic ideas that they were interested in. The compiled a guideline guide to the basics of monster creation for their developers to look at when needed.
  23. They'll likely want that just for Zaros' sake.
  24. When you first logged into RS3 you had that popup. It said the outcome will choose who will have the same fate as Guthix. Cast back into oblivion doesn't necessarily mean death. I sure they have changed it though. Im 90% positive it was "share the same fate as guthix" Either way, I think zammy will like being cast into oblivion in his own wicked way. Edit: Dont think it ever said that, checked dardans livestream. Im just wonder where on earth i read that now o.o.
