If you use the client, you have a better chance of playing when things like this happen. I always have the client loaded and waiting (set for my favorite world) for when I want to log in and play some. Right now, the internet traffic does seem to be congested and the Jagex site in particular is affected. You'll just have to wait it out.

I've done the updates on Win98 machines - no problems I've done the updates on WinXP (SP2) machines - no problems Most people who have problems with the updates, had problems before the updates :)

Helped a friend recently that had the "monitor not getting a signal, always amber light" problem and pc not booting up. Solution? One of the memory Dimm's on the motherboard had gotten half out of it's slot... of course nobody would fess-up to messing with it. Reseated the motherboard memory and all was good. Check your memory...

I'd try "Add-Remove Programs" - "Windows Components" and remove MSPaint. Then go through the same sequence and re-install it. Try that.
