  1. Then you're at risk from all sorts of other malware. Get thee to a free antivirus (and a firewall) if you can't afford to renew your subscription. For the past several years I have used AVG Antivirus (takes a little digging on their site to find the free version) in conjunction with Zone Alarm free version. We have 3 PCs at home and have not had a single virus, malware, or other intrusion. The software has caught a few things, but the last time anything got through our defences was in 1998 (I only know that because it was a few months before we moved house and I know when that was #-o )
  2. Those two arguments for enforcing these rules seem fair, I don't think anyone can deny that there is a massive problem with both password scamming AND trade scamming. Unfortunetely, some people don't appreciate what it's like to give so much effort into acheiving something - they'd just rather take the shortcut! But I don't believe that these two arguments are the reason behind JaGeX doing this. I don't know Jagex's reasoning either. I find the statistc of 50% of chat being devoted to breaking the rules that they quoted in the original announcement to be completely unbelievable. I'm not sure that anyone has ever tracked down *all* the RS IRC chats, let alone analyzed the content. FWIW, I think at least 75% of chat consists of people greeting each other or saying goodbye. I also think that there are as many scammers using Jagex's official client or the website as there are using 3rd party clients. But again, I'm not even sure that scamming is as big a problem as Jagex seems to think it is. I suspect that a lot of people who claim to have been hacked or scammed actually did it to themselves by giving out their passwords, letting friends play their accounts, or are claiming that losing stuff in the Wildy was a hack. After all, if some mean and beastly scammer/hacker stole your stuff, it's not your fault is it? Well, if you went to some fake site and gave them your account details so they could give you a bazillion gold, and instead they cleaned out your bank, then dude -- it's your fault. You're not a passive victim, you were breaking the rules and came up against someone who's better at it than you are. Hey Mr. Mysterious Editor, maybe you should write an article on this sort of stuff! At least, I hope it's Mr. Editor -- If it's actually Ms. Editor, please forgive me!
  3. :D Does that make you the exception that proves the rule? My son and his friends are always on IM *checks other room* Yep he's chatting now. He doesn't care if I ground him, or take away his allowance. Just as long as he gets to keep his IM and his WOW account...
  4. But... But... There are no ostriches in the game! Where do the feathers come from? Is it... dum..dum...dum.. Magick?? 8-)
  5. 12 Blue Dhide, already tanned, 62gp each. Bargain!
  6. When my guest editorial happened, my contact was through Kiara Kat.
  7. And it wouldn't be the first time the Times has published a totally fictional piece either, so there is precedence for that. My guess: It's fiction and the Editor(s), Kiara Kat, and any one else who knows who he/she/they are, are all killing themselves laughing over this whole thing. The more "clues" they give out, the less useful information there seems to be. This whole thing's got me comfortably numb.
  8. I like tidy dungeons. I'll go round picking up stuff left behind by other players and putting it on tables or in tidy piles.
  9. It's a bit much to expect the editor to have an opinion on a skill that hasn't been released yet. Give him/her/them a chance to try it out and actually get an opinion worth reading. There's been a lot of interest in the editor's identity on the forums. I think that the column is an appropriate response.
  10. *puts on Mod Hat* Contact Kiara Kat. She's the one who handles guest editorials. She can give you guidelines for editorial pieces.
  11. Nah -- probably just an insult. Look how they keep calling each other "n00b"
  12. Well I guess that rules out Evil Bob. Rumour is, he's evil because he wants revenge for what was done to him at the vet's. That is so sigged. :P w00t!!!!1!! I've been sigged!1!!!!! I'm famous
  13. Well, I guess that means Exkarotis is the editor. No one else knows what next week's article will be till it's posted.
  14. Well I guess that rules out Evil Bob. Rumour is, he's evil because he wants revenge for what was done to him at the vet's.
  15. Actually, you might be on to something there. I hadn't thought of that.
  16. No, sorry, I can't say. That must mean that he/she/they is or are on the list! Kiara doesn't want to tell us. ;) Not necessarily. Kiara's said she (and the few others who know) won't tell us who the editor is. So she's not going to give us any help if she can avoid it.
  17. Sheesh! What got me put in such exalted company? I'm just a lo-level peon.
  18. Nope. Jagex still only gets the $5. The extra you pay for non-credit card payments are fees charged by the payment company.
  19. *gets a job at jagex* A site on job requirements lol http://www.computerweekly.com/Jobs/2006/09/29/16388/RuneScape+Game+Team+Leader+-+Cambridge.htm Sheesh! Either progamming doesn't pay as well in the UK or else Jagex is cheap. That's below market for a team leader in the US.
  20. Give the guy a break! Could you come up with 52 different essays on Runescape at the rate of one a week? Even with occasional guest editors, writing a weekly editorial is a treadmill. I used to produce a weekly newsletter as part of my job. The main editorial was written by one of 3 people and we used to reckon it took a day to come up with and research a topic and another 1/2 day to write the article. While a lot of it was, kinda like RS, dependent on what was happening each week, there were some general industry topics we could write up and keep in reserve. But getting to press each week meant that someone had to start thinking about next week's article as soon as this week's had been published. The editor is probably researching next week's article right now.
  21. I found this on the Jagex corporate site, which suggests an entirely new, undisclosed game is in the making. I somehow don't think it will be an "RS3", but still think it will be a browser-based MMORPG. Most likely using a similar engine to Runescape, (because there is no position advertised for programmers to create an entirely new engine), but with different storylines, quests, and skills to boot. Although I'm basing all this on assumptions, so no doubt I will be proved wrong by the Jagex crew. : I think that's what the Editor is implying. There will be no RS3, but there will be a new browser-based MMORPG from Jagex that will incorporate a lot of the stuff they're testing in RS right now. Different storyline, different world. Make us all start from 0 again.
  22. Get to work then! *shakes abbysal whip ominously* It's more than time for an update and your columns on the economy are most excellent analyses. Incidently, I thought of you and your analyses when I read this: http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig7/villacampa1.html it's a fairly high-level look at the economy of WoW posted on a political/economics site. This is a highly visible site, yet this guy's analysis doesn't come close to the depth of insight in your articles. (FWIW, I'm a great believer in the Austrian school of economic thought and a strong proponent of the free market.)
  23. Write a piece about the same length and submit it to the Editor. Oh. Wait. The Editor's identity is known only to the Admins. Hmmm... Try sending it to an Admin (or Kiara Kat) and see what they say. After all what's the worst they can do -- Publish is so Bubsa can criticize it
  24. LOLZ n00b!!! I'm 56. Been playing RS for a little over 2 years now. I've been a gamer since forever, started with computer games with the Colossal Caves adventure game on the PCP 11 back when dinosaurs ruled the earth and most of the rocks were still warm and a bit squishy. Welcome to Tip.it and RS! Have fun
