Hey TIF
Cool, although IT isn't my deal really. I'm doing a bachelor of science, first semester, first year, although I'll be happer next semester. Physics and maths FTL. :x I'm having trouble seeing what either have to do with biochemistry, but meh, I suppose they have to be politically correct and give us first-yearers a bit of everything.

Haha, reading all my posts I keep thinking I'm [developmentally delayed]ed or something. At least it's going to end tomorrow (I hope :ohnoes: ).

Your Favorite Comedian?
Bill Hicks, hands down. The truth hurts and he made it funny as hell to those who could handle it.

The Future of Religion
I know perfectly well that a non-theist is the same thing as an atheist, I just don't like the negative connotaitions associated with it and am more inclined towards science. The supposed supernatural isn't interesting to me as the people who have faith in certain things have it all wrong in my opinion. Come to think of it, I don't really care what people think of the title of my belief (or lack thereof). Ok, I'll call myself an atheist again, although it really dosen't make a difference. As a response to your comments on an atheists morals being 'anarchist', that is a really stupid thing to say as I could assure you atheists don't automatically revert to anarchism if they have no belief in a deity. Take the law, for example. As for what I follow, I'm assuming you mean morals, right? I follow my own, which have been influenced by my parents. No theistic musings, just simple logic and 'laws of biology' if you like (i.e. don't kill, mainly). Please, try not to label people who have a lack of belief in your god as anarchists as if we are anamalistic savages, it really is quite annoying.

Hey TIF
Haha - I go to uni 1-4pm on fridays, 1.5hrs travel in; 1hr travel out. Just not a lot of hours at work lately. Management spent too much over christmas and still haven't gotten back down to < 10% :( Oh ok, I'm assuming your uni is part time but even then it seems pretty liberal. What uni do you study at?

The Future of Religion
Out of curiosity, when did George Bush use teh Bible to justify his actions? I don't remember this... Also, you have to remember, Muslims believe basically that teh Christian is a dog and worthy of death. And they would massacre all Christians given a chance. Also, it is not a sin to lie to a non-Muslim, and it is not a sin to murder a non-muslim. These are teh beliefs of teh muslims that are causing teh trouble in teh middle east. I'm pretty sure teh crusades were justified, and it wasn't just muslims who were teh victims, teh crusaders did suffer cruelties as well. teh Inquisition was teh answer to teh Protestant movement, it was not inspired by teh Bible, they just said that something was there that wasn't, those who are not saved do that a lot you know... just 4 they're own evil desires. teh Bible is an inanimate object, anyone can use it. I have no answer 4 teh Klu Klux Klan and Hitler, teh two different organizations/people are just bad people, maybe even demon possessed. Hitler was almost definitely. teh klu Klux Klan can't even spell "clan" right, I truly doubt any of them ever read teh Bible through. I have a question to those who are not religious, where do you think you will go and how do you know? I think there will be nothing when I die. Teh reason I say this is that I am teh non-theist. What happens after death won't concern me until teh time that I die. (I'm not sure if you were joking with all the 'teh's, by the way. I'll assume you were.) Edit: haha, I get it, April Fools.

Have a paradox?
I'd say you could flick the switch, but you wouldn't see light at all. Of course this situation is highly hypothetical. trying to observe a detail of something going at such a speed isn't quite possible I would have thought.

The Future of Religion
It's not a "defense," as you suggest - it's the very point I am making. Science can and will provide explanations to the physical causes of the universe - but no discovery will ever prove anything about a potential existence beyond this physical world. I agree. I wasn't disagreeing with your point, I was expanding on it with a different idea.

Being Alone.. how long could you last?
I think I would actually be quite content. Being the last human ever to exist would mean I would be the end, the omega of all human existance. COOL. =P~

Why aren't you out drinking? You fail as an Aussie :P Haha. The day I turned 18, I was at a one dayer at the Gabba eating pies and drinking beer. Aussieness FTW. If only 'venue' beer was as cheep as my uni bar. =P~ Anyway, I have little idea of what this thread is about so I'm gonna say I'm on a 3 day weekend because I have mondays of for this whole semester. :XD: But unlucky me, I have 2 tests to study for, 1 biology, one chemistry and another online physics quiz. And 2 physics assignments. And a chemistry lab report due on tuesday. :wall: The perils of university. :x

The Future of Religion
Simply a recursive fractal. Nothing but repetition. Exactly, and look at the beauty of it. It's nothing compared to the beauty of a changed heart. In your opinion. Beauty is subjective. I, like assassin I suppose, find beauty in many simple things. I find beauty in a four letter code (Adenine, Guanine, Cytosine, Thymine) that produces every living entity on this planet. But discoveries in the physical universe can disprove events which supposedly happened in the physical universe, i.e. genesis, the flood, [insert supernatural occurance on earth here]. But, of course, you could always have the defense that god did it.

The 'Official' "I think Religion/Agnosticism is bunk" thread
GREAT song. :anxious: Anyway what Tigra said about the warping of god's word seems to have some grounding to me. Think about it guys, think about all of those fundamentalist preachers in the U.S. and other places whose only drive is to use god's word to make a quick buck, or to shove propoganda down your kids throats. People are beginning to miss the whole point of Christianity - LOVE. It's become such a vessel of fear for some dimwitted, slowminded, unfortunate folk that they begin to preach to thier freinds and spread messages of fear instead of love. All we should really take away from scripture or focus on is the messages of LOVE. Seriously guys, [bleep] genesis, [bleep] revelations, [bleep] all of that fear, hate, ethnic clensing, sin, satanic, sadistic bull and just talk about the LOVE of an eternal god who listens to Hendrix and whose brothers and sisters are everyone on this planet and when we all die, it's back to Woodstock 69' (That was semi-serious, by the way. :P )

What are you listening to right now!?
Stitched Up - Herbie Hancock feat. John Mayer. into EROTOMANIA - Dream Theater. I want to have John Petrucci's babies.

Sheepman created: 15% human 85% sheep
Although I agree in a sense, there is one element in humanity that makes us different. We have the power of reason and it seems that no amount of DNA is able to create that. You'd be amazed at the variety of functions the protiens coded by DNA have.

Sheepman created: 15% human 85% sheep
Ironically I had a lecture today on the very same issue (genetic engineering). Interesting stuff. Apart from the comparison of prokaryotic cells to a multi cellular organism i.e. a eukaryotic organism, I'm with you. :D :P People seem to forget/never knew that we (and every other living organism) are the result of a set of instructions. No miracles, no blessings, just a slab of unbiased, inherited DNA.

The Future of Religion
Lol these posts are always so funny. I'm not going to give an in-depth argument for why God cannot not have hell. At least you said that you know it's not the truth, but God, being just, cannot just "forget" your sin without violating His very nature. God's justice and love are equally present. Thus, there must be a place where you atone for your sins and are kept from His presence. Your sin is your only stumbling block; unfortunately, it's a big one. And since no work will eliminate your sin, then I'm afraid that there must simply be an eternal hell, a place of separation from God. If you want more information on the topic, or if you want to find out how Jesus paid for your sins, just pm me. Dude, I wasn't describing the christian religion... so... I'm having trouble seeing why you attributed christian ideals to what I posted.

The Future of Religion
My bet would be that organised religions will be phased out in much the same way that greek and roman religions were. I'm expecting to see more of a swing towards a more personal spiritulaity and nothing that requires 'followers.' Why? People will always have those inkling (sp?) questions, yet we will get smarter and start to realise that in many religious texts there seems to be less of an influence then there sould be on love and mateship. If I were a theist, I'd have a personal spirituality where there is one god whose love is perfect and eternal and who demands nothing, especially not worship. He sees us and him as equal, like good mates. Everyone goes to heavan where all of the questions that we ever had are revealed instantly and there would be no such thing as hell. Hell would be an imagination drempt up by those fevered egos who want your money and try to spred thier seed of hate and fear throughout the world. We were puposefully made to be imperfect and naieve to some extend purely for a basis of comparison for what will be the inevitable perfect end in Nirvana. ... if I were a theist. I know it's not the truth, just a comforting though for an afterlife, perhaps. My bet is that more and more people will form thier own personal spirituality.

am i depressed? i duno?
Maybe a bit of compassion wouldn't go astray. Attention seeking angsty teenager? I was one of those, if that's what you want to call it. I always had to deal with everyone elses [cabbage] as this guy seems to be doing a bit, and your telling him to think of others? Perhaps they should think about what they are doing to him.

The 'Official' "I think Religion/Agnosticism is bunk" thread
I don't think the gaps are that important. I believe you should focus on what God wants to say to us, not what he doesn't want to say to us. Sure, you might find pleasure in new scientific discoveries but they don't often give me any directions on how to live my life. I believe that what god wants to say to us can't possibly be confined to a finite book, therefore he gave us science. Just because it's not in the bible dosen't mean god dosen't want us to know about it. We are finite beings, god is infinite. It wouldn't be unreasonable to assume god wants us to know more than can be told in a finite book.
