Is Torture Ever Permissible?
Given that scenario, yes, absolutely. Millions of people's lives > the psychological/physical well being of one person. It's obviously a more difficult question when you inject reality into the situation though. If you just have a bunch of detainees which are suspected of terrorist activity and they haven't had a trial, then no, I don't think torture is a great idea. Sure, on the odd occasion you might catch someone who knows intricate details of planned major terrorist activities, but that seems unlikely and I'm not sure torturing everyone you detain to find that illusive person is justified. There's also the problem of being true to your example of freedom and justice when fighting people like terrorists. If you don't, then all you have to stand up for and defend is a bunch of empty gestures.

I've been meaning to check them out, so I'll do that now. I recommend Cog, a prog-metal/rock band from Sydney, Aus. The New Normal is a good place to start.

A cure for nut allergy found
I was diagnosed as lactose intolerant (also by confirmed laboratory tests/blood samples), at about 11 or 12 I just started hating not being able to eat regular ice cream, milk, etc... So I started eating & drinking things containing milk just as normal. The entire condition went away by about age 15. I could drink 5 glasses of milk or eat portions of ice cream at friends' birthday parties etc Not that it's advisable at all for most people; If you're allergic to something, just the smell alone can cause serious respiratory aches or worse... But the 'exposure' method can definitely work Apparantly I was lactose intolerant as well and had to drink a special kind of milk. I'm completely "over it" now though, being a daily drinker of regular full cream milk. According to wiki, rehabituation is possible for people with less severe lactose intolerance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactose_in ... y_products There's a .edu link there, but I haven't got time to read it now.

90's mood you say? Try Alice In Chains. (ditto on the Terrorizer reccomendation for grindcore. World Downfall is a rediculously good album).

Live Concerts
I love The Faceless and CC. That would be an awesome show, hope it you enjoy it. :) Anyway, last night I got the opportunity to see the great Alice In Chains in concert. It was an awesome set and their new singer was really impressive.

Homosexuality: Right or Wrong?
It might seem counter-intuitive, but it could still have a genetic component to it. Here's a possible explanation to male homosexuality: http://www.slate.com/id/2194232/ You'd also have to consider that homosexual behaviour is seen in the animal kingdom, in which case there's probably some genetic reason for it. This article suggests that sexually antagonistic selection has also be found in animals.

Swedish/folk/finish/ metal
Almost forgot Meshuggah and Opeth. :o By the way, saying half the lineup of Cynic is Dutch is kind of deceptive. Paul and Sean are easily the two main members of that band, and they're American. It's an American band. Hence the winking smiley! Twas a joke. ;) I met Paul and Sean when they played their second show in the US on February 2nd. Sorry, I tend to look at many smileys as having ambiguous meanings, so it's hard to tell what people are trying to say with them. It's really cool that you met Paul and Sean though. Paul is definitely one of my favourite guitarists in metal at the moment.

You contradicted yourself there. Evolution is not a fact and it is not proven. It is a theory that has heaps of evidence supporting it and little to none against it, but it has not been proven. It's essentially treated like a fact, in the sense that it "has been tested or observed so many times that there is no longer a compelling reason to keep testing or looking for examples". [1] [2] [3] It should be noted that "fact" in science doesn't mean 100% certainty. According to scientific thinking, technically nothing is ever that certain. The theory evolution will never be proven - like many theories it's in a state of flux where new information is being considered all the time. Something like that you can never prove in its entirety, but some of it's basic principles you can.

Victorian Bushfires
its becoming obvious these guys are just trolling RL They're not trolling anything. They're real life psychotic nutcases. Having said that, it can only do good to ignore them and not give them any attention.

The one and only demo by Portal. Good stuff. Edit: Now listening to Focus by Cynic (album). God I love this band. Paul Madvidal has to be one of the best guitarists in metal, surely. He's technically excellent (listen to some of the lead work on Focus or Traced In Air), he can write awesome songs/solos and has a very unique style.

The Daily Show
Love the show! I watch it over the internet. I don't mind Sam or Wyatt, but I definitely think John Oliver and Jason Jones are funnier. Rob Riggle was very funny as well.

With a little study and common sense the written test should be simple. If I remember correctly I got 19/20.

Homosexuality: Right or Wrong?
So Homosapiens (aka humans) are wrong as well? Then in that way same sex relationships are wrong also. So in general Humans are wrong. I hate it when people do this, you know exactly what he meant :wall: Agreed. There's no need to be a smart [wagon] Howlin, especially when it's not even smart. As for the debate of whether we're influenced by our environment, of course we are. If you think about it, there's nothing else to influence us, though there are good and bad ways to be influenced. A rational thinker will consume information, process it, criticise it and then form an opinion of it. A rational thinker won't be bound to one prepackaged belief system but will be influenced by life and it's experiences in general.

Not true. The general picture of the evolution of life is pretty solid and unanimously agreed upon. Note that I'm talking the higher taxa of life here, not the genus/species side of things. The general gist of it is: single cellular prokaryote --> single cellular eukaryote --> multicellular eukaryote --> simple aquatic invertebrates --> simple aquatic vertebrates --> jawed fish --> land dwelling reptiles --> mammals --> apes --> humans.

I'll make you a deal. Instead of pointless arguing, let's try for a bit of education. I'll give you one good educational source on evolution if you do the same for me, but about Christianity. http://evolution.berkeley.edu/

Mmm, impossible for this to NOT be personal by the topic's very nature. Arguing doesn't do anything. I believe you've called plenty of idiots out on their just being idiots. Doesn't mean we don't want to argue. (Well, I kinda don't.) You might know my opinion on this by now. If you're so personally entwined with your beliefs that any criticism of them is taken as a personal insult then you need to harden up or go to another forum. Or go to a church where everyone will agree with you and treat religious ideas as sacrosanct. People can't expect to come to the internet of all places and have their beliefs treated as they think they should be treated. This is the place more than any other where beliefs are truly open to be questioned, chewed up and spit out. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. You can call atheism anything you want, I really don't care. I'll argue back if need be or ignore comments I think are flippant. Why can't religious people feel the same way? This is an internet forum for Christ's sake. These are words. If you let words get to you so much then you need to grow up.

You like Cynic, right? Try Portal. They only released one demo, but it's about 40 minutes of music and I found it quite enjoyable.

Possible Cure for HIV Discovered
Whoa there mate. Condoms are far easier, and pain free. They prevent the spread of HIV quite well.

Is God real post your thoughts!
I agree, but I think it would only be fair to say that the nature of god should be defined as unexplained instead of irrational too. That depends on whether it's claimed that he has properties that are illogical and contradictory or not. As I said, beliefs can be irrational. If they don't make some coherent sense, I'm going to dismiss them as such. We get it. At the same time, I think that atheism seems silly to me, not being held to a higher power being judgement in the afterlife, but I get heavily criticized whenever I bring up that point. Then argue back. Stand up for yourself. If people start getting personal then you can write them of as juveniles who can't hold up an argument without name calling. If you don't want to argue back then leave the thread and get on with your life.

Victorian Bushfires
i disagree. naming him is what should have been done. if he gets beaten to a pulp by some people who decide to take the law into their own hands, i certainly wont be missing him. people have the right to know who caused their houses to be destroyed, and their friends/family to be killed. i seriously hope that the government doesn't spend any serious money protecting him. "Hey, you destroyed a quarter of our state and killed hundreds of innocent people, but we dont care. we are going to spend tens of thousands of dollars supplied by those same innocent people to protect you. your welfare is more valuable to us than all the people who got killed!" i think the money would be better spent rebuilding what has been destroyed. just let the fool who did it back onto the streets. dont expect us to protect you you idiot, not after what you have done. after all, im sure justice will follow through even if we do let him go. There's so much wrong with this post it's not even funny. 1) If you let him free, what if he does it again? Vigilante justice is no substitute for a secure prison where he can't re-offend. If he is a pyromaniac or has some other mental disability, which is a real possibility, I can't believe you'd advocate something so reckless. 2) Sure people have the right to know who burnt their house down, but they can wait until after the trial. In that way, the trial won't be threatened and the prosecution has a better chance of getting the right result quickly. Need I remind people of the case of Dennis Ferguson, who at one point couldn't get a fair trial in Queensland (according the the ruling of a judge) because of public notoriety? 3) Even if justice does "follow trough", well meaning though hot-headed members of the public will be locked up for assault and possibly murder. You wouldn't want that on your conscience, would you? Or are you perfectly fine with well meaning citizens being locked up so long as this arsonist ends up as a bloody pulp? What people need to do right now is be patient and let the legal system take care of it. In that way we will see justice and he'll be locked up for a very long time. Arson resulting in the deaths of multiple people will always carry a serious jail sentence.

Wow, never heard of them until now. What fascinating little critters. Mind you, they don't thrive in space - they're metabolically stagnant. It's a survival mechanism called cryptobiosis and was originally used to survive prolonged dehydration, radiation and low temperatures - the perfect tools to survive the conditions of space. [1] Also, water bears have been shown to survive in space for 10 days, not years. Interestingly, they couldn't withstand the extreme UV radiation from the sun, which isn't a surprise considering it's 1000 times stronger in space.[2] There's nothing irrational here. Even if we didn't have an explanation for the ability of water bears to survive in space, that doesn't make it irrational, only unexplained. I don't even see how you could call nature irrational full stop. People are irrational, thoughts and ideas are irrational, but nature? Nature is just nature.
