  1. The Negation by Decapitataed (album).
  2. not worth it, you will just kill them and put them out of their misery. best way i can think is burn a leg, nothing life threatening. leave it for a few days and then burn the other. a few days later burn an arm. once all the main bits are done, give it a week to heal and then start with the leg again. do a full cycle of burning every limb for every life that was lost, burn 2 limbs for every close relative of every life lost, burn 1 limb for every house/important building etc that was lost (including houses where the owners didn't survive), burn a finger or toe for every volunteer firefighter/phone answerer/whatever who had to stop what they were doing for this fire. after that dump him in a dark cell 23.5 hours a day, and then push him into a small room with bright artificial light for the other half hour. make him live on ash contaminated water and bread (with vitamin pills or whatever to keep him going), and half fill hes cell with smoke. heat hes cell to 60+ Celsius 24/7, even in summer. I'm not a big fan of arsonists, but that's just sick and twisted. Seriously, what the hell would that achieve? Nothing. All it does is satisfy some sick urge you have for revenge. The arsonists in this case are probably pyromaniacs, who are mentally deranged and have a psychological "urge" to see things burn. I've even heard reports of these people joining the fire department so they can actually get in on the action, so to speak. These people need psychological help, not systematic torture.
  3. Don't feel bad about it, they're just in a better position to donate more. As the cliche goes, every little bit helps.
  4. He can't hear you. He's dead -.- You do know what a sentiment is, right? People aren't that stupid, so stop treating them like they are.
  5. I donated a bit last night as well. They raised a touch under 20 million dollars through last night's television appeal alone, bringing the total money donated to about 70 million. I'll have to check up on the figure exactly though.
  6. His revolutionary ideas changed biology forever. Happy Birthday Darwin. :) I think I remember a TV program of his life and work being advertised on TV, so I might chase that up and have a look.
  7. Good work guys, thanks for the support. Good thinking with the links too Azvareth. Should've thought about that earlier. Anyway, my family will be donating soon. Just have to get dad's credit card. Donations have now reseached the 50 million dollar mark and will no doubt go higher when "Australia Unites" airs tonight on channel 9. I've probably said it before, but the response from the public has been nothing short of incredible.
  8. You expected anything else?
  9. The Scepter of the Ancients by Psycroptic (album).
  10. It could, but not necessarily. it's a matter of altering probabilities to our advantage. At the moment HIV has a high mutation rate and sometimes this produces more virulent strains but most of the time it destroys some vital function of the viral RNA. With n more mutations per generation, we could reduce the risk of increased virulence to be extremely unlikely (stipulate any probability you want, we can work out n statistically). The trick is finding n, and this is where research into evolution and natural selection comes in handy. It's a matter of calculating the risk so we can make this a viable treatment. Edit: Come to think of it, changing the mutation rate all depends on the drug, so controlling n would be much harder.
  11. This is a really interesting approach at killing HIV, thanks for the article. I suppose the biggest worry is that this drug would cause mutations in human DNA which could lead to cancer, but this article claims that there are no side effects. Obviously more trials and research is needed before we see this drug available for everyone. Drug trials are very involved and time consuming at the best of times, but it's all for a good reason - so the drugs don't do more harm than good.
  12. The amount of public support for this crisis has been amazing. I just finished watching the cricket, and apparently the match and all sponsor/player/fan donations associated with it raised 6 million dollars. I don't know if that's part of the 25 million, but it's just one demonstration of people coming together to help those who lost everything.
  13. What would be the difference? Haha, just kidding. I listen to other music too.
  14. That character is cringe-worthy. Whoever writes for him ought to be shot.
  15. I don't know about the exact figure, but 180km/hr is ballpark (if not a bit slower than that). By all accounts it moved incredibly fast and gave people little chance to escape.
  16. Maybe a douchebag scientist might, but research these days is bound by a mass of ethical red tape. It would be pretty cool if we actually found dinosaurs, but I'm afraid that's science fiction, not reality.
  17. Akeldama by The Faceless (album). Wow. The song All Dark Graves has one of the most awesome breakdowns ever. This whole album is incredible. This whole band is incredible.
  18. Planetary Duality by The Faceless (album).
  19. 131 dead is the latest total now. There's also speculation that it could top 200. Good to hear what your school is doing by the way.
  20. That's all fine, but it clearly doesn't apply on an internet forum. We're expressing opinions here by using mere words. It's all virtually anonymous and there's no risk of being persecuted/victimised or anything like that. It's the purest form of an exchange of ideas.
  21. While in most cases I agree with that sentiment there are some instances where you really need to pull people's card. Saying something moronic is fine because you can argue against the statement but when people start with racist, bigoted or something that is immensely outrageous to that effect, then I think that they should be admonished for it. Otherwise, if nobody criticises the comments, the poster will feel that it is completely acceptable. Maybe I should revise that. People should have the strength to rise above stupid comments without claiming they're being victimised/denied the ability to express a contrary opinion/etc. By all means speak out against stupid comments. Sorry for the confusion.
  22. Remember that this is in the south of Australia - the area in question including Adelaide, Melbourne and the top of Tasmania. Their average summer maximums most certainly aren't 46*C. In fact, many records were broken or reached, including the longest streak for days above 40*C in Adelaide since 1908 and the highest ever recorded temperature for Tasmania and Melbourne. It may even be worse but I'm not up to date on my news sources. Make no mistake - these are very exceptional temperatures. 23. What "lack of ability"? Everyone has the ability to express whatever opinion they want, no matter how wrong the majority of people see it. So what if there's a popular view on many topics? That's almost inevitable. To tell you the truth I'm sick of the victim mentality I hear wherever an opinion is put down (it mightn't necessarily be you, but I've definitely seen it with others). I'll disagree strongly with Lep1423 saying "scientists are all morons", but I'm not going to go on a tirade pretending I'm being victimised. I'm going to call that a stupid statement and move on with my life. He definitely could have at least put it in more eloquent terms to prevent anyone from being offended. You have to admit, this is very a touchy subject for some. Of course he could have put it better, but that's not really the point. Some people are bound to say stupid, insensitive things from time to time. Rather than complaining about it, people should have the strength to ignore it whether it offends core beliefs or not. I could just as easily claim that Lep1423 saying "scientists are all morons" offends my core belief (being a science student), but do I think I'm being victimised over it? No, of course not. I can spot a stupid comment and shrug it off. It does not diminish my ability to express a contrary opinion. I suppose my overarching message would be for people to harden up. They're only words. Call them stupid if you want, but don't feel bad because someone says stupid things.

  25. We're a land of extremes at the best of times, but what's happening right now is just bizzare. I can't remember the last time I've experienced 40+ Celcius temperatures, but Melbourne and Adelaide have had them for a couple of weeks now. Crazy stuff.
