  1. I remember looking into all that when I first installed it but I can't remember what was limited, it's been a while. You can still find 4.51 installers on other file hosting sites (other than download.com) with a quick googling. :P
  2. I run 4.51, that may be why mine is still free and working, I edited my last post to reflect that.
  3. One common program used for this is Window Blinds from Stardock. The trial version is free forever (atleast my copy has been, that may have changed with version 5) and only has a 5 second nag screen once a day, so it's very bareble. Some people don't like Window Blinds but it has been extremely stable and has given me 0 problems. You can also find lots of skins for WB here. Edit: Zonda beat me to it.
  4. Get mIRC from here (http://www.mirc.com) and follow the instructions on the tip.it chat page to configure it. Don't use your forum name for your nickname and DO NOT fill in your true real name in the "real name" box. Use your forum name or RSN. The reason the server is calling you a bot is because some people like to use large numbers of proxies with names ending in lots of numbers to flood rooms, which happens to be somewhat like your name, so it's triggering the servers protection. Nothing major to worry about, you just need to use something without the large numbers when you connect. :D After connecting you will be able to change your name back to your normal ghost+numbers. If you can't figure something else out post back again. :P
  5. From the Windows CDs you can select "repair" on current installs. NOT the recovery console but into the installer when it detects current installations. It replaces critical system files and nothing else. Your registry remains intact along with all your installed programs and files. When done right all you have to do is reinstall windows updates beyond what your CD installs. That nifty little feature has saved my [wagon] a few times now.
  6. Dialup, cable, DSL? What kind of connection do you have? Did this start happening after you installed new software or hardware? We can't help you with anything if we don't know what your setup is like or if you changed something prior to this happening. :?
  7. The name Dell slaps on the cardboard box doesn't change the fact it only has 2 changes to parts you listed (Ya know, the stuff that MATTERS). I should get into the PC building buisness, just so I can charge people more for the same parts with a different name...
  8. This is almost exactly like the specs you posted in this thread. No need to keep making new threads when you drop a gig of ram and add another 250gb harddrive.
  9. Dell isn't the end all, be all of cheap computers. I just threw together the same setup (With a 19" LCD and keyboard/mouse) for $1300 after shipping on Newegg. :P Coulda gone lower if you were tight about what you picked, but just throwing it together still beat Dell. Either way, that computer will definatly last you a while after a video card upgrade. Edit: Regarding the last posters comment on Vista. Don't worry about that. By the time it's widly adopted and XP is no longer supported, it'll be time to buy a new computer anyway. XP MCE is more than enough for any typical home user/gamer. It's also not the greatest of ideas to buy the very first versions of Vista because of possible bugs that weren't found during the beta process.
  10. You mean net neutrality? If yes, no, has nothing to do with it. Skype being free till the end of the year was a promotion type thing they're doing.
  11. You won't get charged. If I remember right outgoing Skype calls are free for anyone untill the end of the year. After that you'd have to start paying for it to use it again (I think, don't quote me). From your ISPs point of view it's just another data stream. Nothing to worry about. :P
  12. We won't be calling him loser, we'll be telling him to go pick up our suit from the cleaners or watching him make our burgers for the day's lunch.
  13. These boards us phpBB. Looking at the footer shows that. :P By default, you can't merge posts like that without modifying the code. A vanilla install of phpBB2 can't even merge threads, only split, but tip.it has added many, many mods to accomodate atleast thread merging.
  14. Might as well take it one step farther and lump it into 2 groups. One group programmers understand, and a group everyone else doesn't.
  15. Norton is a resource hogging pile of crap. Uninstall it and all it's peices and you'll see what I mean. My dad was amazed by how much faster his P4 ran after his harddrive died and the new one was still Norton free. :P That coming from someone that got infected in the first place doesn't make much sense. You'd probably be in a much better position if you'd actually bother trying it. It's cleaned many infected computers for me. :P Anyway, boot into safe mode (press F8 while your computer is starting up) and run your virus scans from there. Make sure you select "with networking" so you have access to online scanners like TrendMicro.
  16. If it's not in this thread, no. Tip.it != RSC. Different communities have different rules and user bases, that's just a fact of life. Might take some getting use to. :P Double posts are seen by most as an accidental exact copy of the previous. I agree with you that people posting right after their own reply is annoying, but there's no way to really enforce it without putting a massive amount of extra work on the mods. There's no real point to enforcing it if someone is just adding additional information to the thread (as much as I hate wasting DB space). Bumps are only needed for the market place. If the thread is interesting and active, the community will keep it on the front page. If it's not on the front page, it has no more current use, and doesn't need to be bumped. Like I said ealier, making double posts (Your definition, the instead of editing kind) against the rules would just add a *lot* more work for the mods.
  17. Distributed Denial of Service (zonda missed the first D :P ) attack. It's nothing special to know an acronym. Now pay me. It was most likely just some routing trouble somewhere on the net. It's happened may times before. Anyone with the power to bring servers down with a DDOS attack doesn't waste their time on RS servers. They have bigger targets to go after. Same goes for anyone that can truely hack a server. The data centers Jagex will also have competent staff that know how to mitigate a DDOS attack. You'd be stupid to host a few hundred servers and not. :P
  18. svchost[Caution: Executable File] is a windows process that handles DNS and other network related stuffets. Killing it will either result in something no longer working untill you reboot, or it'll just restart itself. Reference/description for scvhost[Caution: Executable File] Another reference: http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/process/svchost[Caution: Executable File].html It is possible for it to be replaced by a virus or other malware, so you should run a virus and spyware scan. It could also be another program running on your machine that is heavily using what the process provides. A personal example, leaving the windows DNS service turned on and using a large hosts file can push it's usage to 100% while it goes through things, so it could be legitamate usage.

    RAID

Right click any "My Documents" icon, select properties. On the "Target" tab you will have a path where your documents are currently stored. Click "Move", select the folder to move everything to, click OK and you're done. Everything will be moved and any new items will be stored there instead. This is assuming you're using XP. It may be different in earlier versions. As others have said, you don't need RAID, just another drive to store things on. RAID is only needed to increase performance or to help reduce data loss if a drive dies in a critical enviroment. Edit: Reading back again, this only moves your personal documents stored in My Documents. All the program data will still be stored in the local settings and application data settings. I don't think you can change that without mucking with the registry. You're better off just moving personal files and programs off to the bigger drive anyway so windows can freely use what it needs.
  20. If it's software going into the real world, Yes.
  21. You can spend all the money in the world on a laptop. It'll still be obsolete and beat to death by the tech 4 years from now. No amount of money is going to fix that. You're better off buying a midgrade laptop and saving money to upgrade again later if you have that much money to spend. Newegg would be a good starting place to browse around, even if you can't order it from them due to location. It'll give you good idea of what you can get for the prices listed, what brands have good ratings and so on.
  22. The lat/lon coordinates are only ball park estimates at best. The last time I looked mine up, I ended up in a corn feild 10 miles from my house. It still had the city name correct though. It's still by far the most accurate IP locater I've ever found.
  23. http://www.webhostingtalk.com is always a good place to look around. It's a dedicated forum for hosting just about anything online. You can usually find reviews of just about any host with some quick searching. Even if you can't find it by searching, you can always post asking for reviews too. : And for the shameless plug: I use hostdime.com for my personal hosting and my dad's small buisness website. Been with them for close to 2 years now and have had no major issues. Whatever did come up was quickly fixed with a support ticket. Even then it was usually just high load on the server because of someone's script going nuts. Pop off a ticket, problem solved. Even then it was never enough to make things unusable. They're currently running a special for 20gb of disc and 1.5TB of bandwidth for $10 a month after setup. Uber cheap even with the setup fee. :P
  24. They also support many non-standards..... which makes them less standard compliant. If they already support 100% of the set standards, supporting things on top of that 100% doesn't degrade it in any way. You can't degrade compliance by implementing something that isn't in the standards specs in the first place. Neither browser is 100% compliant anyway (yet). FireFox is a given, and Opera's own website lists CSS elements they don't yet support. Opera is maintained by the company, not the community. The community only supports it by using it and pitching all its features like you guys are currently doing. The company could very easily survive with out it's community, go back to charging for it's browser and still stay alive with things like the Nintendo deal. Pretty much irrelevant, and anyway opera still starts faster. Yes, those few extra seconds are ooooh so important to everyone. Arguing startup times is just another one of those "OMG MINE IS BIGGER THAN YOUR'S" contests that means zero to the rest of the real world. What would you knowingly do with those few extra seconds in life, other than taking another breath to fill the void? Who had a feature first doesn't really matter. Neither does the fact each tab has the support a full featured window does. Most people out there just want the page to render, work correctly, and do what they expect. "Full window management" isn't something on Joe Users mind. Its just another feature that most won't use, pitched with an "oooh shiny" name to make it look cool. Call it a tab for gods sake and add the time saved typing and saying it to your accumulated startup seconds. You might build up enough time to buy back a few minutes of life I apparently waste waiting for FireFox to start. :?
  25. I said this on IRC, and I'm gonna post it here, just cuz I'm bored. Calling tabs a "a fully-featured Multi-Document-Interface" is like calling an airplane a "Futuristic, Multi-Dimensional, Levitation Device". No need to add a jumble of words to make something sound "better". Its a tab with more "features" slapped on top, get over it.
