I'm sure you all agree... SURPRISING ANALYSIS - 4TH LINK
I am not sure you can say that. Manipulators add instability to the market by putting upward pressure on prices, then selling at peak. Prices then crash. I think they do it just for the gp, NOT to buy 100k green hides or something like that. They're still not creating money, so inflation isn't happening. In FACT, if these clans end up hoarding their cashpiles, this actually REMOVES gp from circulation, thus causing deflation. Without a huge input of currency in the system, inflation is rare. Said another way, inflation doesn't really occur without currency injection. That's my point.

Frankly, anyone who blames this on merchant clans is a moron. They just shuffle money around - they don't create ANYTHING (except perhaps artificial demand).

This is true. I think that the place I got it from has the numbers going back to end 07 though - lemme check... Well, can't find it. And, shall I say, I'm NOT stating causation here. Just correlation. Yes, this might just be summer inflation - but I suspect it isn't. I've never seen prices like this, before or after the GE.

Not sure if this has been posted yet: http://runescape.wikia.com/wiki/Grand_Exchange_Market_Watch/Common_Trade_Index As you can see, inflation has shot through the roof since mid June. There's nearly as much in two weeks as in the year and a half prior, total.

Create a Runescape Price Index to track inflation?
The dude's right... DANG look at the increase mid-Jun to now!

Oh, and what about correlating the other two with the rares increases? That would be awesome! Do hardcore melee folks really use tuna potatoes that much?

Create a Runescape Price Index to track inflation?
That's my concern. Since this isn't even close to a real economy, we need to tweak the measure a little. It's not like the price of bread goes up a buck in a day, but raw monks might go up 50gp. Keep in mind that the index is aimed a roughly the median player. Furthermore, those items that are likely to feel the effects of inflation are those that offer lots of XP gains or utility. For example, you know things are getting hot when Yews start shooting through the roof. This is because folks become flush with cash and purchase 99s. I do like the multiple category one. How about, to start with, for a "Skilling Index": Steel Bars, Adamant Bars Coal Pure Essence Yews, Bowstrings Raw Shark Nature Runes Dwarf Weed, Wine of Zamarok Green Hides Magic Seeds, Dwarf Weed Seeds Oak Planks

Nah dude, my php-fu can whip something together to do it automatically based on GE prices. :-)- Create a Runescape Price Index to track inflation?
You know, with everyone talking about inflation in RS, it might be fun to put together a price index like the CPI (used to track inflation in the US). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consumer_price_index The trick is coming up with a "basket of goods" (no weighting, really). Any takers? Sure, it's a HUGE geek thing to do, but it might be fun - and I forsee a lot of debate on what goes into the index.- 08-July-2009 Mobilising Armies + patch notes

1936: Chins 636k to 98 Farming 457k to 96 Herblore- Java can't...
I should have figured!- Java can't...
Whoever said is totally clueless. Java's biggest GOAL was to be cross-platform. In fact, I play RS on my linux box on occasion. :-)- Skillcapes - Advantageous or Disadvantageous?
Quite true. I made a nice profit cooking sharks to 99, back in... 2005?- Java can't...
This in particular - it's very likely NOT true that Runescript is "as powerful" as Java. Well, I've never seen a proof that it's Turing complete (meaning it is expressive enough to write every program that is possible to write). Jagex has done what I do on my own projects - they've written tools (Runescript at a minimum) to help automate routine changes to their codebase. However, the problem NOW is that I think they have come to rely on it too much. Frankly, I expect that eventually we'll see "RS3" that tries to address the limitations of the current architecture. Look, I know it's a silly rant. Pet peeve, if you will. But since this is my career, I get kinda annoyed about it. :-)- Java can't...
You know, I'm tired of folks saying "Well, RS needs this or that, but Java can't do it." Quit it. Have you ever used Java? Not JScript - not even the same thing. Java's a fully featured language that realistically can do anything you ask of it. The drawback is that it's run on a virtual machine, which slows it down considerably. However, any new .NET application (C#, VB, etc) also runs on a VM. Now, I must admit that the script language and engine that seems to be the basis for RS that is built on TOP of Java might have limitations. But that's a totally different story. It would have the same limitations if it had been built on top of C. I'm a software engineer (which is more than just programming, BTW). It just chaps my hide when I see kids who wouldn't know a double from a float talk about what a language can or cannot do.- SwampJedi - 2280+ - 120cb
1935: Chins- Taking The High Road
Glad to know you're ALWAYS at the top of your game. If you recall, the appearance of logs was changed multiple times BECAUSE of this issue. *** I do appreciate the exchange. It was set up after I left, so coming back to a totally different economy has been odd. However, I like being able to sell the results of my skilling without standing around and spamming chat, or randomly hopping worlds - but frankly I'd like to have the ability to exchange freely as well. I loaned a friend ~50m in cash and items 2 years ago before I left members. Now that friend has quit, and there's no way to get all of that back. To be honest - though botting annoys me, I think Jagex has gone too far in getting rid of it. Sure that's heresy. But you know, I'd rather have botters than the "new wild" or "trade limits". Am I the only one?- SwampJedi - 2280+ - 120cb
