I give them a little more credit than this, though it's pretty sneaky. I think that they know exactly what rares mean to the game, and I know for a fact that they don't like it (see Jmod posts on new tradable holiday items). They also know that they can't make them go away - so instead, let's take cash out of the game. They also know that you can't keep rares from growing forever with a single money draining or new status symbol update - so what do they do? These big updates are spread in such a way, I feel, that they pop the rares increase before it can get started again. It's a brilliant move, if they want to get rid of rares, but I have to say that mega expensive armor isn't exactly a good solution. That's like getting an alcoholic addicted to tobacco instead of alcohol. From Jagex's point of view, it may be that they are happy with the tobacco solution, if only because it once again gives them direct control over the top of the economic system. Prices too high? Increase third age drop rates. Too low? Do the opposite. This is something Duke and I have discussed a little bit, but it's still a fledgling idea (at least on my side). Oh, and note how just a little bit of pressure in the right direction can make a dead thread show promise.
