He did not say he used world 16. =P You only need rune mysteries to mine ess or craft airs from my understanding, but even if you did need rune mysteries it's not a quest with really any requirements and I don't see how it'd be all that related to these guys. Anyways, yah I saw he said he merchanted, I was just throwing out a possiblity on how he would get the money to start, since, as Blueey said, you really need at least a bit to start merchanting. Another way he could've gotten the cash to start would be the 15k from S.O.S., which, while not a ton, should be enough to start if you needed to.

Beg from every p2p you see of course, you'll make loads that way! But really, World 16 airs is decent money. (running ess to the crafters, 2k and ess for each load of 25 unnoted ess)

+1, that's my favorite spot to train. I rarely saw any pkers, and running from them was never much a problem. I usually just bring 5-10 salmon, some rune armour and a weapon for the hobs. Great place with essentially no competion. (al-kahrid often has other miners there, at least in my experience)

Actually, if you just get 25 ess, you can make your first 50-60k in about an hour at world 16 airs. From there you can merchant to your heart's content.
