vBulletin is the recommendation of most admins because it was the best board and so admins have been blindly recommending it ever since. In terms of features - IPB has more. In terms of speed - IPB matches vBulletin. In terms of looks - IPB beats the hell out of vB. If you actually do a comparison of the two boards (and yes I have used both), IPB beats vB hands down, have you seen their next major version upgrade as well? It's pretty bad... IPB is for squares! from what I've seen vB gets picked because it handles heavy traffic better and also more secure. But I don't know, maybe IPB caught up.
