Lifetime Subscriptions?
People with any form of membership or even nonmembership would get mad for being banned or muted. That's the consequence for breaking the rules repeatedly or committing serious offenses and always has been. I think the guy who duped tried to turn himself in and get the permanent subscription but got banned instead. Assuming were talking about the famous purple phat dupe way back in RSC, it was like this: Someone, dont know the name, found a way to dupe through the trade window by inserting IDs into the "trade-x" thingy (i think, its been a long time). Anyway, whoever did it, didnt keep it to himself and it spread to quite a few people, hence why so many pink phats were created and it went from rarest to least rare in a matter of days. Jagex noticed and made an announce that whoever TELLS them how to reproduce the bug, will get lifetime membership, because they needed a fix fast, before more damage could be done, even though the economy was already ruined. After the announcement, a person who knew how to dupe, told them how to do it and got banned straight away. Whether he/she actually did abuse it or just knew how to, nobody knows and Jagex didnt have a way to check at the time (hence why all the dupes had to stay in the game), so i believe the person got banned without evidence, unless he/she had say 100 phat sets or something obvious like that. This happened a long time ago though so bear in mind that my memory might have failed me a bit. Im pretty sure this is quite accurate though. Off-topic: Personally, i think the dupe back then was the best thing that couldve ever happened to Jagex. Sure the economy crashed and all, but it spawned a lot more rares which turned out to not be such a bad thing. Later on Jagex had a lot of issues with rares and their insale prices, think of rares at their highest, and then imagine if there were even less of them (the dupe probably doubled the amount of rares in the game). They wouldve been so much more rare and much more of a problem for Jagex. This is not a discussion on some one incident, we're discussing an actual legit avenue of membership in the form of lifetime subscriptions. Please read the first post.

Lifetime Subscriptions?
Jagex would be in no way "tied", nor would they be legally obligated. Even right now, Jagex can terminate its service whenever they want, the same as any online service or retailer. Also your statement is quite paradoxical, if you really consider Jagex possibly closing in one or even two years, why would you be a member or play Runescape currently? Also, consider that this could be an option, and those who prefer to pay monthly or yearly could still do so.
-
Lifetime Subscriptions?
But would Jagex really lose money from the players who go past the amount of the upfront cost? They get a large injection of money which can be used for investments, company growth and game development, which in turn makes more money and attracts more customers.

Firemaking, not a newb 99
By itself it's not newby, it's newby in comparison to 99 in the other skills. It's one of the fastest skills to train, and costs next to no money. You also repeat the same action, and are never even remotely in danger. Because of those facts, it's considered newby because it's one of the easiest if not the easiest skill to 99.

Lifetime Subscriptions?
Do you think RS should allow you to purchase lifetime subscriptions? It would be something like a high upfront cost equal to 2 or 3 years of subscription, and then after that your account will be members forever with no future payments. Games such as Lord of the Rings Online are already offering this feature, and I personally would like some sort of option like that. What do you guys think?

Has Jagex Really Done All They Could?
I'm fairly certain that the bot population is comparatively much lower than the player population or even the past bot population. You might be surprised to see 3B gold made by bots in a month, but ever thought of how much player made gold is made every month? I wouldn't be surprised to hear 300B. Besides, I think it's an f2p only problem, since I've never once seen a bot in members before. Heck if they want to boost Jagex's ad revenue let them .

So I guess Mobilizing Armies isn't coming this month either? This is summoning all over again.

Time is money - but is it in RuneScape?
Of course it does, you're not balancing it with the amount of profit per hour you make with a money making activity.

Should the logout timer be removed?
This is a great change, nice one Jagex. I really doubt that they got the idea to do it now from this thread, but a great decision nevertheless.

Trade limit for spirit shards
Does the 10k/25k quantity every 4 hour rule at the grand exchange apply for spirit shards? Thanks.

Should the logout timer be removed?
So your saying I should be allowed to leave for work in the morning at bandits, and come back in the evening with 1.5m more XP? Is that how Jagex wants people to play the game? Should I go buy some chinese gold farmer's maxed account instead of training my own, then growing bored and quitting in a month or so? Should I share my account with 5 other people, splitting up the 5$ a month fee? There's reasons behind all of these rules. Jagex is in this to make money. People are already doing that at bandits, that's the whole reason why it is so popular.

Dragon corrupted equipment in F2P....overpowered?
You must either be incredibly young or incredibly stupid to think that "..." is a punctuation. Also, no, it's not overpowered since it lasts all of 15-60 minutes. Also, in before the lock.

Should the logout timer be removed?
The people who are training at high level monsters that somehow have their computer freeze exactly at the right moment while they're in some specific situation (almost ran out of time on their antifire pots, or low on hp and for some reason didn't eat) is comparatively much rarer than say, the amount of people who do fishing, cooking, smithing, woodcutting etc. Also, are you like 10 years old or something?

Should the logout timer be removed?
You're using a rather extreme and rare example, doing that can pretty much justify anything. I can justify not having a bank pin by saying what if there was a really good merchanting offer that only lasted a few seconds and because you had to input your bank pin before withdrawing your coins you couldn't offer the trade in time. Also, many other alternative exist, you can make it voluntary, such as using a pause button (no ability to interact with the game, but all of your settings are kept intact and you don't have to re-enter your pin), or being able to toggle it (so you can have a logout timer while you're at steel dragons, and then turn it off while you're cooking or something). To all those having problems peeing and playing Runescape, you should invest in a laptop, a wireless router, and play on the toilet. Problem solved. So every time nature calls you have to lug a 5 pound laptop around your house and then back? C'mon, there's much more elegant solutions.

Runescape on Xbox Live/PS3 online?
How would it crush this principle? The PC version would still exist, and it's not like it's expensive to buy a PS3 or Xbox. What about the 12 something million who already have the console? Rs on a console wouldn't be aimed at getting their current customers to pay more, but to attract the console market. It would probably work too. Only problem is, they would have to make the game from scratch, as all of it is in javascript(most of it anyway). 1. Ubuntu (Linux Kernel) is an official OS of the PS3, something similar can also be arranged for the 360. It is quite capable of running Java, as you can on a normal PC with a regular web browser. 2. Final Fantasy XI. MMO's can easily be done on consoles. 3. Animal Crossing is rated E, but, along with most online games, explicitly says that online experiences may vary. Jagex is not and cannot be held responsible for what players do on their servers.

Should the logout timer be removed?
My main points are: 1) ALL other MMO's don't have a logout timer, at least not one so demanding as 90 seconds (which is effectively 60-75 seconds if you don't want to be constantly logged out). Macroing etc. are just as illegal in other MMO's as in RS, but those games don't deal with it in such a manner. Also, do you really think it stops macroers/afkers? Because it doesn't. 2) Logging on isn't hard or annoying. What's annoying is re-entering your bank pin, turning run back on, moving the camera to the right direction again, and moving back to the correct interface every time that you logout. This is fine the once or twice per day when you open up RS, but is it something you want to do half a dozen times per hour? Let's say you're checking a guide on aviansies, does it really help that you get logged out 10 times during that hour at which you're at aviansies, checking the forums for a guide? 3) To the people who say it shouldn't be removed, you really wouldn't appreciate an extra 2 or 3 minutes of space to check the forums or watch Youtube while you're doing a task like fishing or cooking?

More fun or more respect?
The grind is commonplace to all MMO's, even Guild Wars in which you can start a character at the maximum combat level and with all the best equipment unlocked whenever you want (as you still have to farm pvp points for higher ranks, farm money for better looking gear etc.). And yes, people do it for the respect, but there's no denying that respect can easily translate into fun at that point. It's much like why people try to gain achievement points on Xbox Live by playing through bad games that they don't like, either to become the best around their peers, or even ranked somewhere in the world. It's about what you get at the end, not what you get during. The same attitude is demonstrated in real life when people spend 4-10 years of their young life going through university, one of the most gruelling and for the most part, "un-fun" experiences ever conceived by man, in order to obtain the end products; income, job security, and respect. It's human nature I suppose.

Aviansies....What happened?
I think Jagex nerfed the drop rates at some point after the release, since I did dozens of trips in the first few weeks and then the drop rate seemed to be halved on subsequent trips. However, that was several months ago and from what I hear, no such nerf has happened recently.

Should the logout timer be removed?
RS logs you out the second the window closes, or you move away from the page, the only exception is when your computer freezes, which under normal circumstances shouldn't ever happen. The intention of getting rid of the logout timer isn't to stay logged on forever, it's simply to give the player more freedom to do other things while playing Runescape. Every other MMO doesn't have a logout timer, so clearly it's not a matter of clogging the servers (and players log out of WoW or GW when they're done anyway, as often other people have to use the computer as well). I suppose there could be the issue of people just making dozens of accounts and overpopulating the cities and training areas, if that's what you mean, but then perhaps this feature should be members only? Then they really wouldn't have a valid reason to keep a logout timer. QFT

Should the logout timer be removed?
As others have said, you can simply tape or weight a key down in order to prevent being logged out, so this is already possible. Also, do you really think that 2 people, even with little to nothing on, would survive in a pvp hotspot for overnight without dying?

Should the logout timer be removed?
*Update* - Jagex is planning a January update that will increase the logout timer to 5 minutes. I think most of us will see this as a welcome change. Thank you alphakoldes and Cha0sx for the following info: [/hide] So it looks like even you whiners worried about evil chickens have nothing to worry about :P Original Post: Many things have changed since the beginning of Runescape, however one thing that has always stayed the same is the logout timer, the time before the game will automatically log you out while you're inactive. In the beginning, it was a good way to stop macroers, however with this many years to improve their techniques I imagine any macroers have long bypassed this function. Also, with the RWT updates I also imagine that said macroers are dramatically decreased in number, thus I think this artifact of Runescape's past doesn't really need to exist anymore. The logout timer is 90 seconds and starts ticking the second you aren't clicking anything or moving the camera. This means while you're playing RS, you have a fairly small window to do anything else, be it feeding the dog, using the bathroom, or checking the TiVo for a program. Even hanging around in a forum can be a struggle when you have to alt tab every 60 seconds or so. Not only is this a problem in and of itself, it is also a strange thing to upkeep when every other MMO out there such as World of Warcraft or Guild Wars don't have a logout timer (even games like Dragonfable keep you logged in indefinitely). What other reasons might they have to want to keep it other than to stop macroers? Perhaps server costs, however if you look at the number of people on RS compared to the maximum capacity, they can clearly handle even double its current capacity without a hitch. I don't think server costs are that expensive anyway, so this isn't a very likely candidate. One other possibility is to stop afk training, but if you think about it there aren't that many skills you can afk train. Afk training is also incredibly loosely enforced, as is made testament by the hundreds of people who train at bandits everyday. Personally, I think there's absolutely no reason for it to exist anymore, and Jagex are just keeping it there since it's always been there, or are too lazy to remove it. I really think it's a necessary move to, ideally, remove the logout timer completely, however I would also settle for an extension to 5 minutes in order to give players more breathing room to do other things alongside playing Runescape.
