Movin' On Out...
With the start of each new academic year, millions of young people worldwide leave the comforting nest of their parental homes to settle closer to the noble institute of learning of their choosing. In my case, that's the University of Leiden. I really doubt I'm the only person on this forum that's moving out this year, so I thought that it might be a good idea to start a topic for all of us TIF members who are striking out on their own for the first time to share tips, discuss decoration, and of course to shamelessly boast about your new roost :D First off: The engine frame of the Ariane 5. While it's not exactly in my room, I pass by it every day on my way to the faculty. The complex as seen from the bus stop where I get out: My desk/bookcase/main place for my stuff: Trespassers beware! Notice how smart-people-books always make your shelves sag... ...and not-so-smart-people-boosk don't? My writing desk, which is kind of cluttered at the moment due to lack of homework and no other place to put my noticeboard: My computer desk: Chemical weapon: Two valiant knights: Aaaaand this is where all the magic happens :D (Sorry, forced to sit through a three hour MTV Cribs marathon recently... haven't quite recovered yet...)

Question
It really depends on what the nature of the community is. If you're participating in an online support group or a forum for homework help then yes, you are contributing to society, there are plenty of examples of that... Of course some people participating in online communities are contributing to society just by staying off the street :-w

History's unfair treatment of the Swastika, and my own story
When I was in Rome with my school, we visited the ancient port city of Ostia Antica. As a practical exam for the classical cultural studies class, we had to give a short tour of various historical sites in the city. My subject was Ostia. One of the locations I used in my tour was the square of the guilds. It's a large square built directly behind the amphitheatre. Surrounding a small temple to the goddess of commerce there were booths that belonged to various guilds and merchants operating from the city. It's not certain whether these booths were used to just entertain customers before and after theatre shows or to actually do business. The mosaic floors of these booths have been very well preserved. One of the booths, probably belonging to a cleric or a follower of the cult of Isis, has several swastikas on its floor.

Does anyone other than me have duel-monitors?
In my old home, I used to have a 19" LCD monitor and a 32" TV that I use as a secondary monitor. Here I don't have much room...

Guilty without charges...
Have you read the article? No opposition voiced. Of course this will be overturned by the supreme court, but the damage has already been done.

Guilty without charges...
Article here So... Anyone can put you on the list, you get treated the same as the guy who got caught, tried and convicted for diddling little kids, and you have to wait six years to appeal and have your name removed? No problems with that at all because people are so honorable. Surely there won't be accusations based on revenge. [insert Bill Murrary here] This means that without any kind of criminal verdict, anyone could be reduced to a social outcast for the rest of his life. Your name, picture and adress will be viewable for the public for at least six years. You will be known as a sex offender to your employers, neighbours and social circle, without ever actually being declared guilty before a jury of your peers.

Braces :D
I was lucky with my braces. My first pair was permanent, but consisted of a plastic plate against the roof of my mouth with two springs in it that were attached to the second-to-last molars in my upper jaw. I only had permanent visible braces for a year or so, and then I got a pair that I had to wear at night. Over all it wasn't too bad, but the pain during periods of transition is always terrible.

WWE!
Are you kidding me? Wrestling is entertainment, yes, it's outcome is predetermined, but that doesn't mean that wrestlers don't have to spend years building their bodies and their skills. First of all, the public has to buy it. If you show a 180lbs guy beating a 300lbs guy repeatedly, they'll simply walk out on it. Furthermore, they are pretty much fully trained stuntmen when it comes to recieving the moves. That was an incident involving the WWE wrestler Daliph Singh (known as The Great Khali). That's something that happened in a controlled training enviroment. There are no trainers watching you from all angles in the ring in front of a crowd of thousands. And that's just a relatively basic move. I can show you footage of people going through burning tables, falling from ladders through lighttubes, being hit with barbed wire, etc.. Just because it's not 'real' doesn't mean that there's no real work involved. As for Trish Stratus, it's been known for a long time that she was done with the WWE. Lita is expected to leave soon as well, and Stacy Keibler's contract has also expired.

WWE!
Yes... they are...? They have a revenue of $400 million a year, and the CEO has about $1.7 billion to his name. It's one of the largest entertainment companies in the world. Of course they'll pop up as popular search results every now and then.

NIGHTWISH!
Epica isn't goth metal, it's symphonic metal, but I'm glad you at least acknowledge your mistakes ;) The female singer of the band grew up about 30 miles from where I live. I've seen them live several times, including once backstage where they signed my We Will Take You With Us dvd.

Magic: The Gathering
Actually, Hex is a pretty bad card, since it's highly conditional. To be able to cast it, there need to be six creatures on the board. To get any kind of advantage out of it, at least three of those have to be controlled by your opponent(s), otherwise you're just giving them an advantage. As for the 69 card deck... let's look at a basic example. You have to draw one specific card, of which you have 4 in a deck. In a 60 card deck, the odds of you drawing that card are 4 in 60, or 6.67%. In a 69 card deck, the odds are 4 in 69, or 5.80%. That means that the chance for a succesful draw is 15% higher for the 60 card deck. This, expanded over multiple games you'll play with that, means you're shooting yourself in the foot in the long run, even if "it's only 9 cards over 60". As for which cards you should take out... Don't cut into your low-mana cost creatures too hastily. They are there to keep you alive until you can put your game winning cards on the table. Skeletal Vampire might be a good card, but it's useless if you die before you can cast it.

Magic: The Gathering
Yeah, I'd bring that down to 60 if I were you. Unless you're running Battle of Wits, no deck should be over 60 cards, simply because of the chances of you drawing a good card will always be larger with 60 than with >60 cards. As for Lotus Petal being restricted... it's only restricted in Vintage, but not banned in Legacy (one of the few restricted cards that isn't). Besides, there's no banned and restricted list in casual.

Magic: The Gathering
Hrm... how about some decklists? All-common stompy: 27 Mana: 15 Forest 4 Land Grant 4 Llanowar Elves 4 Lotus Petal 25 creatures: 4 Jungle Lion 4 Pouncing Jaguar 3 Rogue Elephant 4 Scryb Sprites 4 Wild Dogs 4 Elvish Warrior 4 Wild Mongrel 8 Other: 4 Giant Growth 4 Rancor Explanation: Classic stompy, meaning you beat your opponent into a pulp with a horde of cheap, efficient creatures. It can afford to run only 15 land because all cards in the deck cost 1 or 2 mana. Llanowar Elves and Lotus Petal help as well. Land Grant also thins the deck, making it more likely that you draw creature cards once you've played out your entire hand (which can easily be around turn 3). It's a beautifully efficient deck that can rock your opponent's face off in 3-5 turns. Imagine the following scenario: Turn one: Forest, Rogue Elephant. Turn two: Forest, Lotus Petal, enchant with Rancor, hit with Giant Growth, swing with an 8/6 trampler.
