Madly Fluctuating internet speeds

my internet is going waaaaaaay too slow atm and i cant find a reason why. AVG and spybot havent found anything wrong between them, My firewall isnt finding anything malicious incoming or outgoing, and yet my internet is going at snail's pace.

i.e.. 5k latency on WoW

600 ping on most counter strike servers

download speeds peaking at 40kb/s where i know they can get to 400 easily..

What can cause a slow speed apart from malware?

---------------------------

Ok... it seems that my internet speed is randomly fluctuating from normal speed, to really really slow. I dont have any clue what could cause this random change in speed.. any idea?

Does it occur on all sites? Try doing a traceroute to a popular one and post the results.

Start > Run > "cmd" > "tracert google.com > C:\traceroute.txt" - open that file, copy and paste the results.

It seems to be WoW that triggers it to slow down.. I start it up, log in... the latency is massive so i logout and the internet gradually speeds back up again.. its weird.

theres the results - complete screenshot of it since i couldnt find the file

Yes, that traceroute is totally normal.

Log in to WoW. Set it in windowed mode. Open up a command prompt like before. Enter "netstat". Near the bottom of the list you should find something with worldofwarcraft or similar in the name.

Whilst still logged on to WoW run a traceroute to that host and post the results - remember that you need to include the port when telling it what host to trace (for example it might be login.worldofwarcraft.com:3745). You have to be authenticated to be able to, that's why you have to do it whilst logged in to WoW.

ok no need to do that for now, it seems to have gone away. Speed is back to normal and i can play games fine. I think it might have been the fact that all the other PCs in my house were Downloading stuff while I was trying to play. It usually doesnt affect the speed to badly so i didnt even bother to check :wall: :wall:

Ty for helping though

and oh crud.. its back again.. as soon as i started up my PC this time it was going super slow. I dont think anything in particular is triggering it, its just happening.

Is there anything that would cause this at all apart from malware?

Simple answer, the company is doing repairs and/or updating, sometimes it even results in you having no internet for a short while.

You guys look into these problems way too much.

guh.. nuh..wuh.. need better internet speeds......

i thought it might be that.. its just annoying that i have no control over the situation

If you are using a router to connect through LAN connection to the internet, it could have something to do with it. We had to change our router 2 (or 3?) times, because the router was frequently slowing down or disconnecting. Our router type is "D-link" by the way.

Also, it could very well have something to do with your internet provider. Even if it's optical broadband, they DO have to do repairs sometimes.

We look into them 'way too much' because that's usually what it takes to figure out what's actually wrong instead of just assuming it's your ISP working on something. People that assume it's just the ISP 'working' every time something like this happens end up getting shafted in the end because they're paying for unstable services.

I have one of the best internet providers in the country (USA) and I still sometimes have slow speeds or more commonly no internet every now and then.

Who is your ISP? You better not say Comcast or Verizon if your ISP is the best.

I use a small ISP and I haven't had an internet outage. Period. In the last 3+ years. The only times I havent been able to get online were due to my own stupidity in setting up my router. Maybe you need higher standards?

If that's the case, your perception of 'one of the best in the country' is severely scewed. If slow speeds and no connectivity is 'the best' then my 8000/512 cable line looks like god. It is on and pumping full speed 24/7/365 and when it isn't, it's due to a complete power failure to the neighborhood. There has been one instance in the last 3 to 4 years that a failure of my line was due to something Cox had to fix, and that was resolved within the hour.

An ISP providing unstable speeds and downtime is ripping you off, plain and simple. Expecting speed fluctuations and downtime does nothing more than feed the crap they're shoving down everyone's throats as 'the best'.

That came out too exaggerated. Anyways I have Charter, the fastest speed out there, and 2 times within the last 6 months I've lost internet for a few hours and even those I called who live around me had the same problem at the same time.

I think I win as the fastest isp :D . I have Comcast, yes I think there bad, but only on customer service.

Those are pretty much real speeds too, I can download huge files at 1.4MBs. They are more than double what I am suppose to be getting (8000/386), but I'm not complaining. :)

If you're saying my comments were too exaggerated, no they weren't. It's a fact that my line has only died once in a 3 to 4 year period due to ISP problems.

If you're referring to your own comments, then I must agree.

My comments.

Yea, I wish I had Comcast but Charter is still really nice.

Yay for unexpected upgrades :P My ISP likes doing that ... we started out with a 512kbps line and then they upgraded us for free to a 1mb line without telling us.. then 2 mb,then 2.5 mb, and just last week they pushed it up to 3.5mb :D
