My comp is kinda slow...

Featured Replies

Hi, my specs are:

Microsoft Windows XP

Media Center Edition

Dell Dimension DV051

Intel®

Pentium® 4 CPU 3.06GHZ

3.06 GHz, 504 MB of RAM.

Currently, my comp slows down at random times, and it is insandely fast at others...any idea whats wrong/going on??

It probably because you don't have a lot of ram.

Upgrading to 1-2GBs of ram would make you computer a lot faster.

Have you tried scanning for viruses and spyware?

Im running Ad-Aware now..Should I scan "Full System", or "Smart System"?

Always do full system ;)

Make sure to clean out all your documents, and delete them from recycle bin too. ::'

When it starts running slow, open up task manager to see what is using up all the resources.

Ram is too low, as Blade says 1-2GB's ram would be better, and make it alot faster, Is the Internet slow aswell.. Get a faster Internet - Bt BroadBand - wireless is great. Get's it up to 54 Mbps.

He says nothing about internet speed. 54mbps is your maximum wireless G speed too, not the actually speed you get outside your LAN.

Thats your wireless speed on your internal network. That is not your speed that connects you to the internet.

Theres no reason your computer cant run smoothly on 512mb of ram, unless your gaming of course. You just have to use the right anti-virus and firewall, and cut down on your startup programs. Although I agree with blade995 you would be far better off with a gig of ram.

Post some more details about the problem, when does it slow down, is it when you visit a certain site or open a certain program? Look in task manager when it starts to run slow and identify which process is using up the resources. It may be that you have the common problem of scvhost using up nigh on 100% of the cpu which most of the time is an automatic update problem.

spybot search and destroy is great AV software and it has many tools. it has worked very good for me and has been well worth it. it has a ton of tools to help free up space on your hard drive, easily delete stuff, run all types of scans on system internals as well as detect all of your viruses :) it truely is my favorite combination--- spybot S&D along with Adaware SE personal are best for me. btw i run a 512 ram with 256 mem and i have no problems playing runescape, cs, cz, any source, not at all, its all about your processes, the tool in spybot s and d will easily cut your processes to 30 or less from 50+ depends on brand and make of pc, i have an hp with 17" flat screen, runs like a champ but i'm upgrading to a no namer with 2 gigs that i'm going to make this summer.

hope i made your computer run faster lol

Eventually >.<

Before playing a game, delete everything labeled 'OWNER' in your task manager except explorer and task manager.

I really wouldn't call it an era. It was more of a definitive time period during which dinstinctive characteristics were expressed in similar ways.

That is not a good idea, this could disable his firewall and virus scanner. It may also disable some drivers which would cause problems.

Yeah thats just asking for trouble, especialy for an inexperienced user who might not know some processes are important.

does it run smoothly after the game has loaded or is it very slow.

If it still runs slow, do you have any other applications open like msn, email client, skype?.

I will say again to look in task manager when your computer is running slow, it will give you and us a better understanding as to what is causing the problem.

edit* I forgot to ask, which browser are you using?

ooberman05.png

Glad it's running ok.

If it does happen again, open up task manager by pressing ctrl, alt delete and look to see which process is using all the resources.
