it was a total glitch which was discovered by jagex, all it was, a rare item had the ability to be doubled and tripled and so people did this so that they can make more money but this just made the price go way down it no longer exists though

Mess with the best, die like the rest

A short while after Partyhats were released, an Item Duplication Bug was discovered by a group of players and it was abused heavily. It had to do with ports and proxies or something like that, and they were able to trick the game servers into thinking that there were 2 of an item in a trade (when there was really only one), and after the trade both people would have that item. Pink partyhats were the most duped, because they were the rarest. JaGex eventually caught on, fixed the game so the dupe wasn't possible, banned lots of players, and changed the pink partyhat into the purple partyhat.

If they did not discover the bug, then how was it fixed? Your logic doesn't make sense..

They noticed it was a bug but only after a while. And they still couldn't find out how it was happening until they offered a reward and one of the people who used the bug explained it to them.

PS. If Jagex discovered it then they did they allow people to abuse it???

It was the players who discovered the bug and not Jagex. Jagex merely noticed something weird was happening.

Basically when you trade somebody, you click on the item in your inventory and your client sends the message to the server trade 1 of item 112. The server puts that item in the trade window and takes away yours, if the trade is accepted the server takes the item out of the trade window and puts one in the other persons inventory.

Before they fixed it, the server never checked to see if you had the item in your inventory in the first place before taking it away and putting another of the same item in the trade screen.

So when they 'duped,' they used a modified client to send the 'trade 1 item 112(or whatever the item id of a pink party hat is) to the server, the server didn't check if they had it in the first place. Jagex didn't think to add this because you obviously can't send a trade item packet to the server when it's not in your inventory with the legit client.

So it wasn't really duping, it was item creation because they didn't need to have it in the first place.

The banker killing bug happened the same way, there is no right click attack option on a banker, but they sent the packet to the server which would have been sent when a player attacks something. They could attack the bankers because the client just didn't have a right click option, the server never had any 'non-attackable' npcs.
