Monday Poll: Monster links in Dungeon maps

MPM

Recommended Posts

Definitely the clickable links on the actual map:D

Make more sense because you dont have to move the page down to get the link, if you scroll down you may lose where you were looking on the map above (i.e. large map like the Brimhaven dungeon.

Plus it also looks a hell of a lot nicer and more professional.

The positions are off for me too, using the centre of the standard mouse ponter rather than the pointy bit.

Can't say I'm that bothered either way, but the on-map method would be more work, though I guess you can rely on client side image map support in most browsers today, especially on any system that could play RS.

I like the links below, but it would be nice if they opened a second window or tab like the dots in the map do instead of replacing the map with the bestiary entry. using both options would indeed be the best of both worlds :D

As I said above, being the one who coded those links (Ginger did the in-map links), you can blame that on me and it can easily be fixed once I figure out what the correct code is for opening a new window as opposed to opening in the same window.

don't worry, you are going to "hell" anyway. wanna race to see who gets there first?

If you put the links on the map it's self, you need to make the clickable spot bigger. It took awhile for me to figure out you need to put your mouse above and to the left of the dot to click on it. And to make it easier to make, and easier to click, you should make it so you have to click on the name of the monster on the map, instead of the dot of where the monster is.

I have in fact noticed this. I actually coded the whole script for all three of those maps (for the links inside the image, not the list - someone else did that), and I checked them before I sent them off to be be uploaded onto the site, and they worked fine and were in their correct postions. I've talked to a few of my friends with different browsers, and they're saying the hyperlink works fine and the hyperlink is actually dead on the circle. You're saying it's to the left, my one has it slightly above the dot.

I can only presume that the differentiation occurs when different browsers are used. I am working on correcting this and making sure the code is XHTML compliant so the hyperlinks are in their correct position. Failing that, I'll seek further guidance on why it's behaving like a stubborn child.

Until then, you'll just have to bare with us. I wouldn't have submitted this unless I was 100% certain this error wouldn't have occured. Clearly, I was wrong, but I had that confidence.

The problem might also have something to do with screen resolutions.

Anyway I would prefer the list option as it is. Using the open another window is annoying to me as I tend to use either IE7 or Firefox that uses tabbed browser technology and I like to keep everything in one window.

Just letting people know, the maps with the lists have been modified so that the links will now appear in a new window.

I say if you're going to do it, do both. But instead of linking to the monster dots I would suggest linking to the actual monster names. That was the first place I tried to click and is a bigger area, more chance someone will find the linkage by accident.

Just an FYI for whoever thought the map had to be broken in to "piecemail" to link it, it's actually quite easy to link the map without doing anything to the image using the imagemap code and there are simple programs that do all the hard work for you :P

I think it would be more labor intensive to link the monsters in the MDB to all the maps they are located in. Cool idea though and definitely more user friendly. Kudos to Tip.it. :)

Why should we buy postage stamps when we can make our own?

Actually, I think we're working on that...

I gotta agree with this. I first went to the monster name which didn't do anything :( . The monster name also gives a much bigger target.

Looks great though.

Personally I wouldn't include the links at the very bottom as well, even though it'd be very simple to do. It just bloats the page and if you can click on the name/dot inmap, then people wouldn't miss the list.

WARNING: Prone to ramble ... but you probably already know that!
