It's good for training strength which you can't do properly with a whip. It almost rivals the whip for speed, and is only slightly weaker. I found that at 99 Strength, with nothing but a weapon equipped and no potions/prayers/specials, you can hit a 24 with a Dragon Longsword and a 26 with a Whip. Now compare the fact that a Dragon Longsword can effectively train Strength and you've got something to bargain for at 1/16th the price of a whip. Also, contrary to popular belief, a Dragon Scimitar actually hits one less than a Dragon Long, at 23. Not to mention that the Dragon Longsword requires a much easier quest, I think we've got a toss up on Strength training. However, if you're simply wanting to train attack or defense, then a whip is probably your best bet. If you have the money to spend on it, go ahead.
