At what distance does an accumulator work? and does it work if it is blocked, not by a wall, but by another monster? say - in pest control for example?

It Picks up Bolts and Odds.

 

It picked up Kebbit Bolts for me

It only works if nothing is in the way. And at large monsters as long as the place where the arrows will land isn't blocked by anything, very well explained in this guide.

Because atm im tempted to get a book of balance or unholy book, then use a rune crossbow for the high range bonuses. Crossbows also seem to hit higher? even if less frequent.

The accumulator picks up almost all types of fired ammunition - arrows, bolts, knives, darts.

 

Crossbows have nearly the same range as shortbows, I believe. Maybe actually a little longer.

 

They also deal much greater damage. I hit 10s with MSB + adamant arrows, but 14-16s with rune crossbow, unholy book, and mithril bolts. 65 ranged by the way.

It picks up everything even if they are enchanted etc.
