Grand Exchange - THE Downfall Of The RuneScape Economy.

Featured Replies

Later in the month, we bring you the 'Grand Exchange'. This new building will be located in the north-west of Varrock and will house a huge new addition to the game: the ability to offer items to buy and sell across ALL servers and to ALL players! You might, for example, go to the Exchange and put a full Barrows set up for sale, for example - then, playing Skullball in Canifis, you might get a message telling you that they have sold and that you can go to the nearest bank to receive payment! The Grand Exchange will allow you to spend more time on the things you enjoy, providing a less time-consuming alternative to selling your items on the Forums or amongst the crowds of Varrock Marketplace.

This is the downfall of the RuneScape economy. As im sure you all have heard this system is very similar, if not the same thing as the auction house in world of warcraft. As a long time player of both games I can tell you a very fatal flaw of Jagex's system as they are stating it will do. On WoW there are auction houses for each server, with only a few thousand people, where only half of players can see one and half of players can see other (horde - alliance). What there is on WoW is sort of like merchanting through the AH (Auction house). The very few, very rich players on a server will find a particular item and buy out all of them at the prices set. They will then set all of them to much higher prices and continue to do this causing much inflation and raising prices of that item by a lot.

What RuneScape is going to do is cause this on a MUCH larger scale. Think about how many players play RuneScape, im sure in the millions. Lets give an example, lets say there are 30 dragon legs for sale, all around 1.5 mill each. A very rich player comes along, buys all, and puts them all back up for lets say 4 mill each. Rich players can sit there all day manipulating prices of MILLIONS OF PEOPLE, EVERYBODY ON RUNESCAPE. Not just a few thousand people per server. People will come along who want to sell there dragon legs and see its 4 million each. They will then in turn put their set of dragon legs for 4 million each. Everybody will follow who wants to sell there d legs once they see how much they THINK it increased.

What I think Jagex needs to do is rethink this, and I feel the best way to avoid this very problematic issue is to make the Grand Exchange, but a seperate one on each server.

Good point, i guess. I'm sure Jagex considered this though, so dont worry. If they didn't, I guess we're all doomed  . A way to prevent this would be to make it so that there are preset prices for every item in the auction house. That would make it alot less useless, but it's the only thing i got.... That would also get rid of that fear of ruining merchanting that some players have. For example, from what i've heard, party hats go for like.... 2gp or something at the general store, correct me if i'm wrong. So, merchanters would definetly still wanna merchant these themselves! With set prices, some players would still prefer the freedom of merchanting. I personally, would like it so that you could set your prices, but, this idea would get rid of many concerns of some of our fellow tipiters. I don't know, butcher this idea, say whatever you want about it, just a suggestion/ a prediction on what Jagex might do in order to prevent this.

Yeah, I don't have a cool signature, so the MSSW3 sig will have to do....

If I had a gold piece for every time I've heard someone bemoan the pending destruction of the RuneScape economy, I could buy a Burger King hat.

And then alch it.

Hmm interesting view point. Reminds me of R2pleasent jacking up Half Wine prices.

But is it possible to do this to items like dragon armor? There are a lot in circulation and how many would a merchant have to buy out to successfully be able to raise the price? But that could change if others with those item see what's happening and follow the merchant.

@qeltar, they're not burger king hats. Ours are made of paper and come from a christmas cracker. BK hats are made of thicker paper and come from a factory.

Well, if things get like that at the exchange we always have the normal trade system as a fallback. While the rich merchants sit at the exchange manipulating prices people will be selling those items for much cheaper on world 2.

Thread #5 based on some hints in a Behind the Scenes article?

No, I don't think it will become a disaster and I think Jagex can handle this very well.

This is their job, they're good at it.

All you non believers just wait...

Imagine 5 of the richest people coming together and all just buying out items at low prices and setting it for much higher.

It will happen.

If that's the case, I'll buy some items too and hold onto them and enjoy the ride.
