Mining:

With out a doubt power mine iron for free players and granite for members

Smithing:

well depends, do you

-Want to use banked ores from mining

-Want a profit

-money isn't and option

-Want 99 smithing as fast as possible

-Just wish to break even

You could go the gold way. Mine it in Brimm and smelt it with the gold gauntlets. Use fairy rings and the fisher king relm with the wistle. Bank in Zanaris.

Mine iron, bank it, then make iron plates? I'm sure iron would be much faster then steel. Just sell the iron plates to a general store or something.

Mining Gold/Smithing Gold:

mining iron, coal/smithing steel:

Will only be a matter of time before master posts :-w

mine all your iron ores to 99 mining, buy rings of forging and smelt all those ores into bars. Then, with the bars, smith them all into knives. ::'

now wait for master!

Strangely with WotLK so near, I wished I could delay it a bit to push through that last TBC content in MH/BT :'(.

I'm thinking get 99 mining at the same time as 99 smithing and you'll be rich by the end of it process.

After you get those 2k steel bars sell them Buy more coal and iron. Oce you have that 5k coal and 2.5k iron (Around that) Mine coal until you get 10k coal and mine iron until you get 5k iron. Then smealt then smith those into steel plate.

Sell the steel bars and buy more coal and iron. Once you have it mine coal until you get 10k then mine iron until you get 5k. Smelt then smith into plates.

Repeat. Lol, all i can come up with.

If you dont want to do that. Smelt Coal and Iron into steel bars sell and buy more coal and iron. Repeat that and might get boring and slow. But you'll be rich.

Based on your current levels, you need to mine:

361,951 iron ore

253,366 coal

194,897 gold ore

or a combination of all 3.

and you need to smelt:

1,035,454 iron bars (excl 50% failure rate calculation)

739,610 steel bars

575,252 gold bars

(or combination)

or smelt & smith:

345,152 iron bars (excl 50% failure rate calculation)

235,331 steel bars

Iron will be the quickest way, even if you had to mine 600K iron ores to cater for the failure rate. You're still only looking at 2 ores per bar as opposed to 3 for steel.

Steel will give you better profit though.

Given that you are F2P, and want to make at least something out of this ... I'd suggest something like the following:

1) Powermine 300K iron in SE Varrock mine, banking them all (10,715 trips to/from bank)

2) Sell 200K to members for around 100gp each (5Mil)

3) Buy 100K coal

4) Smelt 50K steel bars (1,786 trips to/from bank)

5) Smith into 10K steel plates (2K trips to/from bank)

6) Buy 10K Nats and high alch for 1200 each (9Mil profit)

That'll get you 3/4 of the way to your mining goal and 1/5 on the way to your smithing goal.

Then decide if you want to mine your own coal or repeat the above. I'd probably look at mining your own coal and buying the iron at this point. Could even do it earlier if you wanted.

Mining will always be higher than smithing, so if you want to be done with them close together, you should make sure you don't spend your profits on other things but feed them back into buying ore

Timing-wise, I'd say the 6 months mentioned above would be very optimistic. Getting to 99 mining could easily take that long on it's own. Smithing could take another 18 months or more.

Tip for quicker leveling

Get members for 1 month. Focus on completing the quests that give mining/smithing/selectable experience. Bound to save a good amount of time.

WARNING: Prone to ramble ... but you probably already know that!
