VindictiVe
Ok, so let me first start out by saying that RuneScape was my very first online interactive game. After a while i started seeing new online games as cool as RuneScape, such as a very fun game called Knight Online. If anyone has played that game, they will understand what i am saying. The graphics on that game are amazing, but the reason i don't play that game anymore is that it doesnt have the multitude of different things you can do as RuneScape. They both have their ups and downs, but mainly the down of RuneScape is the graphics, I think Runescape is behind the time in graphics and its time to get with the program. I know it takes time and money to come up with new graphics, but please your players, do the right thing and update the graphics. Im not advertising Knight Online (i dont play it anymore) but check the game out and see what i mean.

TheAncient
RS is written in Java, and it's hard to get good graphics using Java (try it for yourself). Now you might ask, if Java is bad, why would Jagex program in it? Java allows for RS to run on all sorts of computers, from old to new. This also means more RS players :D So bad graphics are inherent to RS... Ever wanted to find street prices of RS items? It's mostly because it's a browser game, and because the original RuneScape engine was designed by Andrew when he was living in his mom's basement (true story). Java is almost as good as C++ when it comes to graphics. Anyway, the current engine, which was last updated in about 2006, can't handle Knight Online graphics. Jagex is doing all they can to update the older areas and NPCs to look more detailed and realistic. I'm hoping that Jagex's new games will have much better graphics than RuneScape's. Ah, this reminds me about the noob on the Runescape forums who was upset with the quest "Cold War" because apparently his grandparents died in the war. :wall:

VindictiVe
I guess i dont understand the technology of it all, im not trying to criticize or put a game over the other, all i know is the type of game like Knight Online, even without the system that can handle all sorts of computers, still had a steady amount of 2 million people online at once, which is much much much more than runescape has ever had. Death_Hippy
Their slowly updating the graphics of different monsters items and towns gradually if you havent noticed. What they should really do is update how the players look...the players look lower quality than the monsters! (don't upgrade armor look, just the actual players look when you create them...and I don't mean the "new player clothes" I mean how their skin looks, maybe add some eyes or something.) VindictiVe
What if they didnt run the game on a website? i was just thinking that might be the problem. websites wouldnt be able to handle a game like knight online. what they should do is make the game downloadable and work the game through that instead of working through a website. runescapeloser22
Knight's graphics look like WoW's :P Runescape is written in Java, so I'd say the graphics are pretty damn good when you look at the limitations and difficulty of Java! VindictiVe
i agree but they wouldnt have to go through java if they didnt run it through a website, they could write their own program or use another userfriendly program
wakka102
Rs has the most amazing graphics around when compared to other Java games. Now it jagex ran Runescape through a downloadable client that was free to download from the runescape site, then we could really do something :D . They would no longer be using Java, but they would have to basically redo the game.

Runescape graphics are far beyond what I thought they could accomplish in that programming.

The ywould need to triple or quadruple their graphics team and basically redo the entire game to get the graphics that good, they are slowly improving graphics but i don't see it becoming a downloadable client game, at least not with RS. llamster
whats that screen shot from, that aint half bad? Wurm Online, an MMORPG programmed entirely in Java. The company that made it is quite small, so it's not really that good. Still, it's good enough to be used as an example. Makoto_the_Phoenix
Java can do some pretty decent graphics, but a very good reason as to why they won't is so that the game itself can be played on a wide spectrum of computers. That, and drivers vary on how they are written from OS to OS (and I use Linux most of the time, and they don't have many [of the same] drivers [that Windows users enjoy] for their OS -- I blame the manufacturers). If you asked me, I'd rather not buy an entirely new machine just to play some online game. I figure I can play Chess online and not need half the graphics card. :D Plus, if any game forced me to play it outside of Wine, it wouldn't be worth the time to me.
