Ycon
The fact that everyone in Germany was becoming a Hitler Youth at that point, in order to not annoy Hitler, isn't an argument I feel comfortable with. That's like saying it's alright to become a Nazi and kill people, because otherwise you're in danger of annoying Hitler as well. If u have a gun in ur hand and some1 with a shotgun (threatening u) in front of u, who would u kill?
Danabis
I still feel uncomfortable with it. The fact that everyone in Germany was becoming a Hitler Youth at that point, in order to not annoy Hitler, isn't an argument I feel comfortable with. That's like saying it's alright to become a Nazi and kill people, because otherwise you're in danger of annoying Hitler as well. Maybe I'm just overly sensitive because I'm Jewish, but I don't feel comfortable with a pope who was once a Hitler Youth. I know people change and all... but I don't like what it stands for, that it suggests to people it's OK. Meh :x I'm sure I speak for everyone that you're right to be sceptical for that reason. The Hitler Youth basically was Hitler's "grooming" so to speak of young children of the Ayran race (Blonde hair blue eyes). But only being kids at the time, I'm not sure how aware the children like Ratzinger were about the whole regime Hitler was about to inflect on them and the world. Maybe after being enlightened to it, he decided he wanted nothing to do with it, but again I'm not sure. He was just a kid, blissfully naive perhaps of Hitler's final solution. Yeah, it's quite a well known fact that a good majority of the kids in the Hitler Youth were just after the fun, games and commradery it offered, and just ignored alot of the propaganda. I mean, I know if I was there it would bore the hell out of me to sit and listen to political drivel. That said, I defintely see what Mad's saying. Bmw
Where are you guys getting your "It'll take weeks" info from? They had expected an annoucement today or tomorrow. Longest vote ever took 3 years, but that was quite a while ago. Longest in recent history was like what..4 days? Anyhow, I just hope this guy does as good of a job as John Paul II. I'd just like to say this is not the point I'm trying to make. Also Mad, before I didn't mean everyone was joining Hitler Youth out of fear but the Armed Forces. Even people who didn't join this were sought after for death. In the link Cj posted it states that Ratzinger was never a part of Hitler's party. This is how much you all raised for charity. Mercifull
I think that John-Paul worked very hard to modernise the church for 25 years, and now this happens. I created this image to show what i think. Mercifull <3 Suzi "We don't want players to be able to buy their way to success in RuneScape. Hannibal
I think that John-Paul worked very hard to modernise the church for 25 years, and now this happens. Personally, I don't think John Paul modernised the church all that much. He made a lot of progress in improving relationships with other forms of religion, but the church itself is still horribly conservative and oldfashioned. Examples are the stupid stance on anticonception, abortion, but also their stance on women's rights (women still can't become priests, officially). While John Paul was very liberal in issues concerning peace and friendship with just about the entire world, the aforementioned issues still stand, and in that way, he did not modernise at all. More like a standstill for all the time he was a pope. It doesn't look like Ratzinger will make things better, either. :(
Exarch
It's a shame. I'm an atheist, and I can't respect any organization that invokes such idiocy by being against homosexuality, contraception, and gender equality. Better luck next time, I guess. bs_johannes
He's 78 years old. He's gonna die soon.. If everything goes like planned.. Opps, did I say that? So like bs_johannes pointed out, in practice you'll find no pope younger than 60 years of age selected. Seeing him as a human, I wish the pope a long life, as a pope, I wish he'd die or refrain from the title (won't happen) soon so we can have a more progressive one. bs_johannes
I think John Paul was actually an exception, he was only 59 when he was elected if i remember this right. He turned 60 shortly after tho.

1_man_army
I think everyone bring up the whole Nazi question is overlooking the fact that from 1936 it was compulsary for all children in Germany to join one of the Nazi Youth movements - it wasnt just a case not to annoy anyone but it was forced.(I learned this in History & confirmed it by reading the book I got for it). That aside I like the idea of this new Pope he seems quite committed to helping the poor & needy, infact he lives/was living quite a basic lifestyle which is kind of in the style of St Francis(one of the few religious figures I admire). He who learns must suffer, and, even in our sleep, pain that cannot forget falls drop by drop upon the heart, and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God. - Aeschylus (525 BC - 456 BC)
