Skilling for money or money for skilling?

Featured Replies

I was not certain whatever I should post this here or somewhere else, but since I think this topic is a discussion I choosed to post it here. However, if I did wrong when I posted it here, admins and mods should feel free to move this to it's appropriate place.

Money and skills are two of the biggest things in the world of RuneScape. Most players tries to get money and have as high levels in the different skills as possible. Some prefer just to train some skills, for example skillers, who don't train combat, while other trains all of them. Some people care less about money, some care more about it. But all of us has some goal in the game which has with either, or both, of these things to do. It could be to have enough money for a santa or party hat, it coulde be to have enough for that barrows or rune armour and it could also be to reach 50 agility or 70 woodcutting. There are many different goals, often several for each player, but almost all the time (Except when it comes to quests) it's about either skilling or money.

In this thread I will present two "tactics" which I have noticed in the game; The skilling for money and The money for skilling. I'm sure that the most of you know what I mean, but I will present them anyway for those who don't.

Many times players say that they want to earn xp and money at the same time, for example by crafting runes and then selling them. This is the skilling for money tactic. It has the big advantage that you get xp as the same time as you earn money. But this tactic can't be used on every skill however, since you sometimes will need to buy the items necessary for getting the xp you need, as in construction. Also it mostly goes slower to achieve the level you want by using this one (Not always though).

Sometimes you also hear about someone who "buys" a skill, for example prayer by buying a lot of bones, and therefore using the money for skilling tactic. This tactic is often used for those skills which would take a very long time to get xp in if you didn't buy the items or materials you needed, for example smithing and herblore. The big advantage with this is one is that it goes much faster getting those levels than with the other tactic, since you will get the items or materials you need faster. However, you will lose money on it. The higher level you go for, the more money it will cost you.

Now, what's the discussion then? The reason to why I created this thread is because I would like to hear which one of these my fellow TIFfers thinks is the best one.

Which one do you use? And for what skills? Why?

Is it the best to skill for money or use money for skilling?

Discuss.

i use my melee skills to kill monsters to earn some cash. Like now im killing lots of tzhaar kets which already made me 1,5m in 1 day. Its not the best money for killing, though i kinda like it there to..

All the cash i earn there is going to skills to level them a bit higher, right now everything is going to spirit shards so i have a nice amount to level my summoning.

so yeah i think best is use money for skills, but probably because i dont know good ways to use skills for money

Personally I would start skilling for money until I made enough to really pound away at the more expensive skills. For example, if I wanted to train construction, I would first train runecrafting so I could make a little money, then repeat the process if I ran out.

That's also a way to do it, and I must admit that it's a very smart way too. I will try it out myself

Usually, I skill for money until I have lots of gold in my bank that I can use for skills that can only be raised through wasting money (Construction namely). However, for most skills that feed each other (wc to fletching, fishing to cooking), I prefer to cut my own logs to fletch and catch my own fish to cook so that I can raise both skills and still make a profit.

So, I guess I do a little bit of both.

I believe that I fit into the skilling for money category the best, but I do not believe that it is as simple as that. The main skill that I train is smithing, but I mine my ores. So I end up getting the Mining skill up, so that I can get the Smithing skill up. So I skill to skill some more, instead of skilling for money. In the long run, I end up getting money, but it was not the original purpose.

That's just my two cents though.

My ultimate goal would be to get 99 in each skill. In order to do that I rarely choose to do something that uses up all my cash and I always am doing skills and things that make money. Such as raising combat by doing slayer and making sure I collect the good herbs (to help herblore) and good drops (to sell to others or high alch). So I guess I skill to make money and then turn that stuff into better equipment (so combat goes faster) or into those money eating skills, (construction and summoning!!). I have never bought a single piece of non-essential equipment and most likely never will.

If all the world is a stage, can someone please get all the clowns off the stage so the performance can begin?

I train melee mostly through Slayer. If I'm in a jam for money to train other skills, I will either Fish, Runecraft, or go to God Wars. If I train my melee to the max and other skills that make money, I think that I will be able to fund all my moneypit skills (Herblore, Construction, etc.)
