Guild Wars vs WOW

i havent ever played guild wars, but wow has new updates constantly on the horizon, the current one is going to be very fun, sort of a capture the flag minigame. they are also churning out new dungeons with monsters, items, rewards, etc that put an emphasis on team work. some have to have a raid (40 people) to be able to beat it.

if you are going for pvp only then guildwars might be better from what i've heard, but wow is an overall superior experience rpg'ing.

! definitly guild wars! its $70 for the collectors edittion, $50 for the game. The thing thats better is that you dont need to pay monthly fees. and ive also played it at a friends house and i thought that it was a whole lot better than WoW

The thing about GW is really that in the end, they have to have a continous income to keep the servers/game alive. They claim to be able to accomplish that by releasing "optional" expansions. Personally, I think that's a clever play on human psychology.

The people who bought every single expansion for the Sims might aswell have been paying 10 bucks a month. Pricing and releasing the expansions in a way that will make anyone who buys them pay enough to equal a monthly fee is not hard. If they distribute it via digitial downloads - thus avoiding retailer's fee - they're going to have no problem making money that equals Blizzards income on monthly fee's.

The only thing between you paying 10 USD a month and you not paying 10 USD a month is then the "optional" bit. They'll have a hard time balancing the relative powerlevels of completely new classes even if it was in their best interest to do so. Likewise with new areas and items.

That being said, GW is more casual player friendly than WoW. If you don't want to touch it for two weeks then play two nights and then not touch it for two weeks, you can. But if you're actually looking to do serious MMOG gaming, the no-fee is not an argument.

I'll add to this debate, for World of Warcraft PVP, on the topic of the Battlegrounds. Battlegrounds has been what Blizzard has been working on even before release, and not too long ago it was put on a Test Realm for people to test. I've played alot of Battlegrounds since it's release, and I'll tell you it's alot of fun.

Currently, there is two Battlegrounds open. Alterac Valley (Major Battle - 40 People on Each Side = 80 Total) and Warsong (Capture The Flag - 10 People on Each Side = 20 Total), with more to be opened in the future. I can say that both are great fun.

Alterac Valley is Massive. Basicially the goal is to Capture/Destroy certain points such as Towers/Garrisions and Graveyard, and in the end Capture the Enemy Base and kill their Leaders. The Battle can range on for hours, the Battlefield is Massive, and there is a bunch of Quests inside the Instance that you can do to help your side. For example, loot blood from your fallen enemies to summon a Giant Ice Lord, or Bring Armor Scraps to you Blacksmith to Upgrade your troops. It yields you also alot of Honor Points, which increases your rank on the PVP scale, and increases your Reputation with whatever side your on, to get Powerful Armor and Weapons. It's great fun.

For Warsong, It's a simple CTF game. There is a few special boosts, but otherwise, you're playing against 10 others to win. These games go alot more faster the Alterac, but are still alot of fun.

PVP outside Battlegrounds is fun too. Although, there is usually Zerging sometimes, and Rogues ganking you, It's always fun to hunt down the opposite side, and defend your outposts when Alliance attacks. The newly added Honor System is pretty cool as well. Always nice to get Rewards for killing.

woow so false in so many ways

first the reason they have no monthly fees is because their server upkeep is alot cheaper since all the missions are not directly connected to the rest of the game. That is why you will never see another person (except your team mates) in any of the quests/missions. There are only certain areas (more like towns and cities) where other people can come and go as they please. I say around 5% of the map is a free come and go place , since the missions are long and take up a lot of space. Don't get me wrong this is still a heavly person interaction game.

Expansion packs is the way to pay for the servers, and are totally an option. You don't have to buy any of them, or a certain order of them. I dont believe they will cost the full $50 bucks either (from what i hear), and they will come out every 10 months or so. So i guess if you end up buying every expansion (which i know i won't do, probably buy maybe 1), you are paying about 3.50 per month or so. But i dont believe many people will, because as they have stated it will be a total option and will not make other people be more advantaged then others.

I wouldn't be so sure. Guild Wars streams a lot of content on-demand to the client, and bandwith is expensive. The servers may not cost as much as the WoW ones do in terms of processing power and memory, but that's mainly a one-time investment with some maintenance now and then. The game will cost a lot of money to run. Besides, support often costs more than servers, and no matter how the game operates they will need that.

Yeah, they are optional. But the game is competitve, and those who play it a lot will want to have every advantage they can get. Hence, the addicts will buy the expansions, and the casual gamers will most likely buy some aswell.

The difference between GW and WoW in this regard is that in GW you will be able to choose how much you wish to spend on the game and get features based on that decision. For a full experience, you will need to buy expansions. Which is what Blue Tear said, so I fail to see how he is "wrong in so many ways".

For the record, I do not play either game, so no one needs to bring in the fanboy argument :)

the problem is these kinds of games turn almost everyone into addicts. unfortunate but true. on this kind of arguement nothing will convince me unless i see a time vs. expenditure graph of the two lol :P

Yeah I thought I was playing too much when I had level 28 character in 4 weeks on holiday. By then 2/3 of people had level 60. Now I have had to start again so many times because realised not on pvp server or sucky race >.<
