Welcome to my Smithing Guide!

Smithing, has allowed us to create armour since RSC; it is also one of the oldest skills. That being said, there are also a variety of ways to train smithing, such as smithing Adamant bolts, Iron nails, or even smelting Gold Bars.

Common Misconceptions

What is NOT covered in this guide

[hide= Lets get started! ] Lets get started!

Yep, lets get started. Notice how it's usually the dwarves who do smithing and mining around RuneScape? That's right, to train smithing, firstly you must behave and act like a dwarf.

Okay not really, but you do need...

Hammer - Bought from the Grand Exchange, or at the general store for a measly 1 coin.

Bars/ores - Depending on the method you're going to Use, you'll need some of these.

Hold up! I can't smith/smelt my ore/Bars!

There are a few explanations to why you can't smith/smelt.

Don't have the required level:

Always remember to make sure what level is required.

Using a Bar on the furnace:

Most Bars will have no effect When using the Bar on the furnace.

Using the furnace to cook uncooked pizzas is a big no no! Say goodbye to your pizza if you do![/hide][hide= Experience Rates ] Experience Rates

All Bars have different experience rates. When smithing Bars into items, the experience per Bar will never change. There are very few exceptions, which will be covered in the methods later.

These rates are pretty much basic, I will only list the Bars worth smelting.

Smelting

  • Bronze: 6.25 Xp

    Iron: 12.5 Xp

    Steel: 17.5 Xp

[/hide][hide= Locations to smith/smelt ] Locations to smith/smelt

There are several locations around RuneScape to smith or smelt. Don't get mixed up though, locations for smithing and smelting can be in quite different locations.

The locations below are Listed from the best to the worst.

Smelting Locations

  • Neitiznot - Members

    Edgeville - Members

    Port Phasmatys - Members

    Piscatoris - Members

    Al Kharid - Free

Smelting Locations

edgevilleee7.png

Edgeville is one of the top locations to smelt your bars. However, you must be a member, and have at least completed the Easy Varrock achievement Diary to enter.

Having Completed the Easy Diary allows you enter the furnace, and also allow a 5% chance of smelting 2 bars When wearing Varrock Armour 1 (steel and below).

Having completed the Medium diary allows you the same, except that you can have a 5% chance of smelting 2 bars at once When wearing Varrock Armour 2 (up to Mithril).

The Hard Diary gives the same advantages, except you have a 5% chance of smelting 2 bars at once When wearing Varrock Armour 3 (up to adamant).

This is Equal top place with Neitiznot. However, if there are more than 3 people using the furnace at once, the door can slow you down; as it is always shut.

neitiznotnw4.png

Neitiznot is also one of the top spots due to its proximity to the bank. You must have completed the Fremmenik Isles quest (of have started it) to get access to the area. You also need to be a member.

The bank at Neitiznot is a one click bank, which is a good advantage.

portphasmatysur3.png

Port Phasmatys is another good location. To gain access to this place, you must have completed Ghosts ahoy quest. You also need your ghostspeak amulet, otherwise you will take longer to access the bank. You also need to be a member.

One bad thing about this spot is that the bank and furnace doors close from time to time, which may slow you down a little bit.

piscatorissb4.png

Piscatoris can only be accessed after completion of the Swan Song quest. This is another good location for smelting. This area is for members only.

alkhariduz1.png

Al Kharid is available to all players, and is also the best location to smelt in F2P worlds. If you have not done the prince ali rescue quest, you will have to pay 10gp to pass the toll gate. alternatively, you could take the entrance in the north section of Al Kharid, but it is a long walk.

faladorbw7.png

Falador is another good location. It can be faster that Al Kharid if you actually teleport to the centre, but it is very costly if you do. It is available to all players.

Smithing Locations

varrockjh7.jpg

Varrock is available to all players, and is the best location to smith.

yanillesr9.png

Yanille is a good location to smith, and is available to all members. It is located south west of Ardougne.

voidknightsqr6.png

The Voids knight outpost is another area where you can smith. This area is relatively quiet too. To get to this location, you need to travel with the squire, who is at Port Sarim.[/hide][hide=What to wear]What to wear

There are no limits to what you can wear. However, the optimal items that should be worn are items that reduce your weight.

These Items are...

  • Spottier Cape - You will need 66 Hunter to wear this. if you have 40 hunter, the spotted cape is not as good, but provides adequate weight loss.

Boots of Lightness - You will need a Light source, such as a candle to get these, which is located in the dungeon west of the Sorcerers tower south of seers.

Penance Gloves - To obtain these, you need to have 150 points in each row of the minigame Barbarian Assault, and 40 Defence.

Along with that, you should also wear nothing else.

What NOT to wear

Anything that drags your weight down significantly should not worn. For example, wearing Full Granite and carrying a full inventory of Barrels of Tar would drain your energy from 100% to 0% in less than 10 seconds!

You should not wear...

  • Armour that is quite heavy. (especially if you have low agility)

If you decide to smith or smelt in F2P, regardless of membership, do not wear...

  • Anything Fancy

    Rares

    Expensive Items

    Skill Capes

    Any new items

[/hide][hide= Training to 99 - P2P & F2p - The basics to 30 ] Training to 99 - P2P & F2p - The basics to 30

Smithing can be slow at first, and with so many ways to train, you can have some trouble deciding what to do at first. Just so no one is excluded, I will once again put F2p methods for the free players who read this.

Before reading on, a reminder that this guide is made to maximize your efficiency in smithing. This means there will be NO mining involved whatsoever.

Level 1 - 29

  • I Highly advise to do the "Knights Sword" quest. Upon completion, this will boost you to level 29. This is the fastest way. And a word to those skillers, I have completed this on my level 3 account, and it is possible.

Upon completion, you will end up at 12,743 Xp, (or 12,899 Xp if you got to level 3 in tutorial island.)

Level 29 - 30

  • You will need:

      • 19 Iron Bars If you got to level 3 in tutorial island.

25 Iron Bars if you did NOT get to level 3 in tutorial island.

Now, you can smith anything you like with the Iron Bars until you Use them all up. This is becaUse each Iron Bar gives the same exp.

At this point, you will end up at level 30, with about 13,370 Xp.

Got up to this point so far? Well done. You can now start to smith efficiently, shown below in the next few tabs; outlining all the methods.[/hide] Techniques to train

[hide= P2P - Smelting Iron ores to Bars (Level 15+)] P2P - Smelting Iron ores to Bars

You will need:

  • Iron Ore

Ring of Forging - 1 ring for every 140 ores.

Method:

  • 1. Once you have obtained some Iron ore, go to Neitiznot (if you cannot go there, refer to the locations and see the next available location).

    2. Go to the bank, withdraw 28 Iron ore. Make sure you have your ring of forging on.

    3. Head over to the furnace and Select 'Smelt Forge' ('smelt furnace' if not in Neitiznot).

    4. When the screen in the text box appears, right click on 'Iron Bar' and Select 'Make X'.

    5. Type in 28 When the amount screen comes up, then press enter.

    6. When all the Iron Bars have been made, head back to the bank.

    7. Deposit all Iron Bars and withdraw more Iron Ore.

    8. Repeat if needed.

    9. Sell on the Grand Exchange When completed.

Tips

Instead of typing '28' when you get prompted to type the number in, you do not have to type in 28. For ease, I suggest typing in anything higher than 28, (such as 32) so that it is faster to type, and also less chance of stuffing up.

When your ring of forging runs out, I do reccomend that you bank the load of iron bars, withdraw a ring, wear it, then bank again to withdraw more iron ore. This way, you do not mess up your 5 trips per ring of forging.

Method:

  • 1. After buying your desired amount of Iron Bars, head to Varrock West Bank.

    2. Withdraw your hammer, and 27 Iron Bars.

    3. Use the Iron Bar with the anvil, a screen will open.

    4. Find 'Nails', right click and Select 'Make All'.

    5. When all Iron Bars have been turned into Nails, head back to the bank.

    6. Deposit all Nails and withdraw more Iron Bars.

    7. Repeat if necessary.

    8. When fully completed, head over to the Sawmill Operator east of Varrock, and sell the Nails to him.

Tips

When welling the nails to the sawmill operator, i suggest you change the mouse settings and toggle the 'two button' mouse off. Prior to that, I suggest putting the nail and the very last slot in your inventory. doing this correctly will mean you don't have to move you mouse at all!

You will need:

  • Iron Ore

Coal - You will need two times the amount of Coal for every Iron ore. i.e. 2 Coal for every 1 Iron ore.

Method:

  • 1. Once you buy your desired amount of Iron and Coal, Head over to...

    • Al Kharid, if you're F2P

      Neitiznot, if you're P2P

2. Withdraw 9 Iron, and 18 Coal.

3. Head over to the furnace, and Select the "Smelt Furnace" option.

4. When the Screen in the text box appears, Right Click on the Steel Bar, and Select "Make 10".

5. When all the Coal and Iron have been melted into Steel Bars, retrace your steps back to the bank.

6. Repeat if needed.

7. Sell the Steel Bars on the grand exchange When complete.

Tips

When you do start withdrawing the Iron ores, I suggest you withdraw 10, then quickly depositing 1 before withdrawing all coal. An alternative to this is to withdraw 10 iron, all coal; then when you come back to deposit, you also deposit the iron ore along with the Steel Bars.

Tips

I recommend to keep you other hand on F7 (if you're using a Windows computer). This is incase you accidentally click superheat too fast, and stuff up your routine. By leaving your hand on top of F7, you can always guarantee that you can get back on track faster, without losing efficiency.

You will need:

  • Nature Runes

    Mithril ore

Coal - 4 Coal for every 1 Mithril ore.

Method:

  • 1. Start off by wielding a fire staff, then withdraw all your natures.

    2. open up your bank again, now withdraw 5 Mithril ores, and fill the rest of your inventory with Coal.

    3. close the bank interface, click on the magic tab to open the magic interface.

    4. Select Superheat 'Superheat Item' and cast it on any Mithril ore.

    5. Repeat until all ores have been converted to Bars.

    6. When completed, open up the bank, Deposit all Mithril Bars.

    7. Repeat if necessary.

    8. When completely done, sell these on the grand exchange.

Tips

I recommend to keep you other hand on F7 (if you're using a Windows computer). This is incase you accidentally click superheat too fast, and stuff up your routine. By leaving your hand on top of F7, you can always guarantee that you can get back on track faster, without losing efficiency.

Always withdraw the mithril Ores first.

You will need:

  • At least 20K

    Have completed Giant Dwarf quest

    Hammer

Method:

  • 1. If you have at least started 'fairytale II', use the Ring code DKS, to teleport just north of a cave. After, enter the cave and go East. When you get into keldagrim, ask the botman to take you there. If you have NOT completed 'fairytale II', go to the dwarven mine with 150gp (75gp with chaos (a) ), to get to keldagrim.

    2. one you reach keldagrim, Head over to the blast furnace (East side of the river), which can be depicted by the furnace icon. Once you reach the building, head downstairs.

    3. Go to Ordan the dwarf, trade him, and purchase 25 mithril ores.

    4. Head over to the conveyor belt and place the mithril ore on it.

    5. Head to Ordan again, this time buy 25 coal, and place it on the conveyor belt.

    6. Head over to Ordan one more time, buy 25 more coal and place it on the conveyor belt.

    7. now, go east and pedal the bicycle until you see the ores vanish into the furnace.

    8. As soon as you see them vanish, click on the spade. then, heap coke into the stove until you see the stove become a dark orange color (about 15 - 20 heaps of coke).

    9. when the stove is dark orange, get off and search for any broken pipes. if you find any Broken pipes, just click on them to fix it.

    10. When all is checked, start using the air pump. make sure there are no broken pipes while you pump. If so, just fix them and resume air pumping.

    11. After a while, you will see the Bar dispenser being filled. at this point, stop air pumping, and grab a bucket (near the entrance) and fill it with water at the sink.

    12. Head over to the bar dispenser and use the bucket of water over it. At this point, drop your spade and bucket; then click of the bar dispenser.

    12. withdraw all the mithril bars from it, head over to the anvil, and make 5 mithril plates.

    13. High Alch the plates, and repeat the process till there is less than 50 coal in Ordan's stock. If this is the case, switch worlds.

Tips

If you have forgotten your hammer, there is a spare hammer in the north east section of the room.

due to the pipes breaking randomly, the timing for each trip of 25 bars can be very erratic. For Example, the fastest time I made 25 Mithril bars, turned into plates and high Alched was just under 3 minutes; whilst on another occasion, it took nearly 9 minutes because the pipes constantly broke.

Doing this it groups of people may shorten each trip time, but the amount of coal that Ordan stocks may diminish much quicker. In this case, you could bring your own coal along (noted) but expect a loss as a result.

Also, if you're planning to EARN CASH FROM SMITHING, then Smelt Iron Ores into bars while using a ring of forging.

If you are planning to train smithing WITHOUT LOSING MONEY, but would like to do it in the fastest time possible, Iron Nails are the best way to go. [/hide][hide= Common Misconceptions] Common Misconceptions

Cannonballs:

Many people believe Cannonballs are good in terms for cash and speed. However, this is not the case! As shown earlier in my techniques section, making cannonballs is nearly the same exp as smelting Iron Ores into bars; and only produces half the profit!

It can also be backed up by the previous section, in which the cannonballs method was not even used once, due to it's inefficiency. So why have I still put up the cannonballs technique? To show that the Exp rates and profits just do not compete with any other methods.[/hide][hide= What is not covered in this guide?] What is not covered in this guide?

Everything that is not related to the actual smithing or smelting is not included. Mining is also not included, due to it (mining) reducing the efficiency of the smithing process.

Summoning Familiars are also not included, as I believe they are a waste of money and time. For example, the time it takes to re-bank just to fill you summoning creature up every trip slows you down, because you have to fill two inventories up; yours and your familiar.

However, an exception is the Spirit terrorbird. If you seriously cant afford to lose money buying energy potions, then use these with the scroll. They heal energy as follows: Half your agility level. So if your agility level was 82, it would heal 41% energy per scroll.[/hide]

If you would like to request any information on any parts of smithing that could be added to this guide, please do not hesitate to tell me, thanks.

I hope you've enjoyed reading my Smithing guide. =P

fubol, Oscariina, geelkapje99 - Thanks =P

Not gonna lie, a little disappointed. You need to look up on the blast furnace, because right now you are telling people to throw their money away.

Thanks, I knew I have forgotten a few bits out. I'm not actually telling people to throw money away, there are a few techniques stated that do actually gain money, or stay on par. Also, these techniques aim to complete smithing in the fastest time possible.

For example, lets say you wanted to get 10 million exp, and technique 'X' got you 10k smithing exp per hour, and no cash loss. Lets also say there was another technique called tehcnique "y"; which gets you 150K exp per hour 700K cash loss per hour.

now, lets see how long each technique would take.

Technique 'X' = 1000 hours in smithing

Technique 'y' = 67 hours in smithing

However, technique 'y' costs 700k per hour. so 67 hours X 700K = 46.7M

Now we need to find out how long it would take to earn the cash for technique 'y'. Let's say you earnt 300K per hour.

In this case, 46.7M / 300K = 155 hours.

Now, finally, lets re-add up all those again.

technique 'X' with no loss in cash @ 10k xp/hr = 1000 hrs in total.

technique 'y' with 700k loss per hour @ 150k xp/hr = 222 hrs in total including earning the money.

As you see, throwing your money away in smithing can sound bad, but obviously it just saved 778 hours in this theoretical example.

As for the blast furnace, I have will check up on that today. I guess i completely forgot after spending 3 months as a nonmember before coming back to members again. =S

I never knew about having 9 addy ores and coal for superheating addy bars. I used to do 3 addy ore + 1 mith and the rest coal. It was a pain to refill every banking cycle. But with your method, it is amazing. I am getting mad xp and my hand doesnt hurt as much.

Thank you

VERY GOOD GUIDE! (Sorry, for caps lock :D )

Really need to get smithing up fast, your guide is like a glove to a hand- perfect fit!

Just wondering, do you have any idea, how long would I smelt/smith 4603 mith bars to mith bolts in blast furnance? (Got no money to spare lol)

Thnaks for a great guide!

Thanks, at one time I was making 10k addy bars when they were 3.7k each (gained about 1k profit per bar back then), luckily I figured out this way or it would've been even worse, lol.

Thanks. ;) To smelt then smith 4.6k mith bars into bolts, this will take about 15 - 16 hours.

wow, you are amazing.

I am going to use this for training smithing for quests.

Thanks :)

One of the best smithing guides I've seen in a while - helped me out a bit.

You could maybe add some gp per exp rates, or cash needed from common levels -> 99.
