I am thinking of taking up "real" guitar. (The reason I said real is becuase I play GH and Rock Band A LOT.) The problem is, I don't know a good guitar to choose. Here are some factors:

 

 

 

 

 

-It can't be a cheap one from Wal-Mart

 

-Money is not an issue

 

-Must be good for beginners

 

-Must sound good and look cool.

 

-Must be an electric guitar (I am saying this becuase I know some idiot would have posted an acoustic -.- )

I'm working under the assumption that you haven't learned guitar before. I think for a beginner's guitar, a Squier strat is definitely the way to go. If you already have an amp, you can pretty easily pick one up from $200-$400. If you don't have an amp, you can buy the amp and the guitar in a package. You could spend a bit more money and pick up something even better, but to be honest, you don't need anything better than that for your first guitar.

 

As for where to actually buy it, just go to your nearest music store. If you really live out in the middle of nowhere, you could order it over the internet, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's always better to try your instruments out before you buy them.

Also, if money really isn't an issue I would also try getting an epiphone SG, but make sure you have a good amp first! ALWAYS remember than an amp is 70% of your sound.

Get all your guitars from here. cheap, good and look nice.

even though you dont want to, you should start with an acoustic guitar(assuming that you dont know how to play guitar). having an electric guitar and not knowing how to play will just make you look like a talentless rich boy.

 

 

 

On topic, i would recommend an ibanez RG370, which is like $400 more or less. its really easy to get used to it imo, so i guess its good for a starter. it also sounds good, but you need a good amplifier too (preferably a Crate one around $250). now, if you have a lot of money then the ibanez jem7v steve vai signature is the one for you! \ its the perfect guitar (sounds good, looks cool, its comfortable), ive always wanted one but dont have the money :( . but as i said, you should really start with an acoustic guitar.

Yeah Squiers are great for beginners.

 

 

 

No point getting an expensive guitar if you decide you don't want to continue learning after a week.

 

 

 

Plus if you can get a decent sound out of a trashy guitar, think what you can do with a proper one.

Biggest problem with getting a guitar that cheap is how quickly you grow out of it. At least if you spend ~$400, it'll do you well for a few years, then you can keep it as a gig backup or something.

Dude if like you say money isn't an issue and you think you're going to stick with it skip the beginner guitar. Just go straight to the 400-700$ range, there's no reason to waste money on a cheap guitar if you're going to be upgrading soon anyway. But if you do this be sure you're not just going to say "it's too hard I quit" and drop it in a week.

 

 

 

You need to narrow down what body style you're looking for. What music are you planning on playing?

For beginners, no matter what the price, get a Squier, just like everyone else has said. It's a great beginners' guitar.

This is what you want right here. This one of the best starter packages you can buy. It's a great guitar that'll last you untill you're ready to move up. The amp is meh, but it's better than any Squier amp you'll get.

It really depends on what genre you're going to play. The guy that's in my band bought an Ibanez over last Christmas break and it sounds pretty awesome. He's got a Line 6 cab and pedal board as well. We play metal.

Fender Strat. Your standard, cliche, classical looking guitar. It has three stock pickups, and sounds nice. But please, for the love of your children, do not get a copy. If you want something cheaper, you can get a Squire Strat, as they don't count *fully* as copies.

 

 

 

Gibson Les Paul Standard. I prefer the look, and sound, of this over the strat. It has another cool look, combined with quality sound. They produce a bright tone, and they have some of the best pick-ups. If you have the money BUY ONE OF THESE!!

 

 

 

If you want something less generic ....

 

 

 

Gisbon SG. I don't know much about this guitar, you can just wiki it.

 

 

 

Then there's Gretsch guitars. If you consider a guitar being a exotic car, with a strat being a Lambo, and les paul being a Ferrari, Gretsch come in as the lesser driven, more expensive and exotic conterparts. Hmm....something like Lotus.

 

 

 

Gretsch are expensive, but damn well worth it. If you feel like paying over $2000 us for a guitar.

what ability? -.- you havent started playing yet -.-. And yes, it'll be at least 3 years until you start doing gigs, thats the average.

Ahh... Gibson Les Paul... I love those guitars. So beautiful... but not really a beginner guitar. They're really expensive. But ehy are so worth it... and beautiful. They sound so nice.

 

 

 

The Gibson ES series are pretty good too. They sound niice, and a little more screamy (closer to the tone of a Strat) than a Les Paul does. You can tell I like Gibson, can't you?

Absolutely NONE of those guitars are beginner's guitars. To be honest, I think it's better to learn on a cheapish guitar, because if you want to sound alright, you really have to nail the technique. On a better, more expensive guitar, it's a lot easier to sound good.

 

I can't really agree with you on Gretsch either. From my experience they tend to be either really trebley, or really bassy--not a very even sound.

Umm.....yeah....don't do that. In 2-3 years when you're better you can look at these. But starting out on an LP standard is a waste....and a sin.

I have a blue californian stratocaster that I got for $100. It sucks. Learn from my experience.
