Racism speculation

I hate the double standards our country has. White guys or any other race cannot call black people the N word, yet amongst themselves they do it frequently. I was in Chicago one day and saw on a bus advertising a Black radio station. Their slogan was "I see black people".

Two things wrong with this. One: A radio station for blacks? What would happen if there was a radio station for whites? National controversy, loss of jobs, and CNN going berserk with on-the-spot news coverage. Two: The slogan. If there was a radio station saying "I see white people" it would probably be looked down upon.

Then there's Black history month. What would happen if there was a White history month? Sure, there are many countries with White people and that would mean a lot to cover in the month, but then there are also a lot of Black countries as well.

I'm of Indian/Pakistani heritage so this stuff doesn't mean much to me anyways, but I'm still dissappointed at all these double standards.

as much as I hate to use this online phrase + 1

You realy nailed that one on the head Warren.

Something I've always wondered: what do, say, Italians call black people? African-Italians? Or do they just call them black? Same goes for any other nationalities, I guess.

Well if you want a lesson, we all hail from Babylon, and people emigrated across the world from there.

The End.

Remind me, when exactly have whites needed to fight for racial equality in the developed world?

I think most of this came from the fact that their ancestors suffered and they feel like they should get cut a break. Plus, I feel most of them take advantage of that as I get the racist card pulled on me all the time. It's pretty funny when that happens though because this is how the conversation usually goes:

Kid: "My ancestors were slaves and I deserve the rights that they fought for."

Me: "So, you deserve to (a) Never turn in your homework, (B) Get an F in the class, and © Call me a cracker?"

Kid: "It's America. I have the right to do what I want and say what I want. Plus, I can call you a cracker because your ancestors were slave owners."

Me: "My family has only been in America for 3 generations. Good bye."

I think most black people expect that all whites in America were slave owners because they feel they have the right to call us what they want and I get threatened all the time when I speak my mind only to have them shut up after I say the "3 generations" thing.

Yup, the whole "slave" argument is pretty stupid either way, the average American citizen during the period was to poor to own 1 slave, most slaves were owned by plantation owners who used slave labor leaving the white citizens jobless, if they pull the "slave" card on you, tell them they forced your ancestors into poverty

People like the kid you mentioned don't honestly believe they have a right to do whatever they want because of the slave trade. Surely you have the intelligence to realise they're using it as an excuse to abuse people.

You're both being pretty silly if you're honestly suggesting the slave trade was the only form of discrimination against black people. There's still blatant inequality now.

That's what I'm wondering. The only time I see discrimination is when a white person loses their job to a less-talented person so the company can't be sued for racism :x .

However you forget that was a time when families grew their own food, made their own accessories (furniture, clothes etc.) Most of the stuff they had was inherited, anyways.

Black people use the 'n word' among themselves as a way of defeating and and attempting to take it back. It's a tactic that's been used often. Both the terms Suffragette (as in the womens rights/voting advocates) and impressionist (as in the painters) began as derogatory terms that were eventually captured by the offended parties. The reason they get upset is because of the prejudice and history attached to it, but I can see this changing after a while as it has in the examples above. It's a different case obviously, but it could still go the same way.

There's a black history month for a reason, and there's no white history month for a reason. History is white history. Black history would be neglected if people weren't reminded of it. It's much the same as a radio station example. Unless you target a niche specifically, you won't find it. Do you find the "I see black people" thing offensive at all? I don't. It's a clever (although somewhat cheap (but what advertising isn't)) way of appealing to the target audience.

La lune ne garde aucune rancune.

Just a quick idea here while we are discussing history months. How about changing Black History Month to Africa history month, and add a month for all the other contents to study their history? Actually sounds good to me, I would tune in to Africa history month programs instead of black history, because they would have to cover things before the slave trade (like the old African empires- namely Egypt)- no chance their to send us all on the guilt trip (every year I hear how my evil ancestors enslaved and oppressed them, no not my ancestors, they where all poor and did not live in this country then). I think the whole thing would be really educational, and entertaining at times.

Going a little off topic I know, might actually want to make a new topic for this one.

I am 100% convinced they only say it for an excuse. I was just stating the response I hear all the time.

I know this will sound horribly racist, but...

I know several people of the african decent. They still hold on to the fact their great grandfathers (or whatever the hell they were) slaves. Well, I'm sorry that happened, but who's still alive that were slaves? No one. So give it up, that's not an excuse for ANYTHING.

And yes, there are still many racial inequallities today.

I had a piece of grass on my shoe, and she wiped that off. Yeah. Impressive, eh? That's probably the closest I've ever been to having sex. :P

That's not racist.

It's pointing out that a selected group of people still have a chip on their shoulder because of what happened to their ancestors. For what it's worth it annoys me too, because that attitude is not amenable to equality between races, which is supposedly what they want. That attitude only serves to divide people and perpetrate a victim mentality. If they want equality, they need to ditch the grudge first.

Well clearly you and I live on different planets. Despite going to a school where white people were the minority (10%), I've yet to actually hear a person of African decent complain about the slave trade and hold it against me.

If there are people saying that, they're in a strict minority and doesn't become justifiable to abandon all efforts to create equality in protest of what those idiots are saying.

I don't feel any guilt for the slave trade. I wasn't a part of it. However, I am no better than those slave traders if I see that discrimination still exists in the modern world and choose not to do anything about it.

I believe what I believe out of a principle that everyone deserves a right to equal opportunities, not out of guilt or out of a feeling I owe them a debt.
