Screwy Computer after visiting Site

The Dark Lord

Recommended Posts

I went to a humor site called Encyclopedia Dramatica. Popups started flooding screen and I had to run adware/spyware scans. I deleted a lot of adware, but popups pop up every now and then, even with filter on highest setting. Browser windows close by themselves and I don't know what to do. Norton isn't finding any virus and as I wrote the original thread of this topic, the browser freakin closed on me again. Any help?

I haven't been to ED myself for a long time, but last time I tried I saw that they might be closing down. Are you sure that it's actually ED you're visiting and not someone who stole the domain name after they shut down?

I went to some thing about Billy Mays... Anyway I restarted and when I opened IE6 (browser) it said it had a problem with an add-on and kept shutting down. When reading about what that add-on could do, it said it could make IE close by itself if it was a poorly-made add-on. I disabled it and now I can get on IE.

As far as the pop-ups, haven't gotten any yet, but I imagine they'll come. They even show up on the desktop when all browsers are closed. :wall:

I will say, you should get rid of Norton, that will free up a lot of resources on your computer as well, and replace it with Avira if you want a free av or Kaspersky/NOD32 if you don't mind paying.

What did you use to scan? Also, good programs are Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware ;).

I used Norton Anti-Virus, but it's expired and used Ad-Aware. When trying to update a year's worth of definitions, it wouldn't download from server.

download ad-aware SE personal (again if you were having problems updating), Spybot, search and destroy, as well as Avast! antivirus. All are free, and links to download all of them are available in the stickies at the top of this forum. Update all of them and run scans with all of them. While i'm pretty sure that encyclopedia dramatica does not have adware on their site, it might. Run the scans and see what happens, your problem sounds like some form of adware.

They do have spywares on some of their pages or so I heard. I think they remove them quick enough though.

As for the Antivirus, use Avira instead of Avast!, it's better and also free.

Why the hell are you using the pos called IE6? Use Firefox, or atleast IE7 :S

Still, you should get a different adware and spyware removal tool

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

Never had a problem with ED, though another friend said they got a virus from it. I've seen the billy mays page, and I didn't get anything bad.

I also have one of the best antivirus programs

I don't use ED myself, but knowing how popular it is it shouldn't really give you any spyware (though I can't tell for sure). Like has been said, try a different anti virus/anti spyware. AVG is another good free one.

.

Also, get rid of Norton asap. Leaving it on your computer will cause you more problems. Best to download the forced removal tool from the symantec website which should remove all traces from your computer.

Instead of AVG, use Avira.

AVG has once been the best in free av software, but now it has fallen back and does not perform as good as before.
