funion987
In General Discussion mostly, but sometimes in other sections of the forums, I very often see someone start a topic and receive twenty flames about how the topic has already been discussed. Every time that I have seen people do this, I personally was not aware that there were other threads regarding the same topic. I assume that if I didn't see that another topic already existed, that other people would also be unaware of former threads. Therefore, people who didn't see the "original" discussion thread could have a pleasant conversation about it, even if other people in the world have already discussed it. People who have already seen the topic posted about could just ignore it. I'm sorry if I sound bitter, and I don't mean to rant or flame (otherwise I would have put this is that section), but does anyone understand what I'm trying to say? Or alternatively, can you explain to me why posting a topic a second time is bad?

Great_one
Well you're right, it's one of those annoying things people do. even more anoying is when there was a 20 page topic up for 2 weeks that there was much dicussion and fighting about and then as soon as everyone has said what they had to say the topic finally gets off the first page and then some guy w/ 20 post comes in and makes a topic about the exact same thing. it anoys me extreamly that they a filling our gd up with old news and garbage when there should be discussion about other thing that are more important that get bumped down due to the "new" topic
DieselX
Thing is, at some points you have to let the old topics go. And ironically, when someone bumps an old topic, even if what they're saying is VALID and isn't spam at all, you have a troop of people coming in and screaming "OMG YOU BUMPED AN OLD TOPIC!". So really, what are we supposed to do? We can't bump old topics, we can't make new topics because someone 3 years ago made one exactly like that. If someone made a similar post 5 minutes ago: OK. But if someone 6 months ago made a similar post, I'm not going to go dig through heaps of garbage to make you happy.
funion987
We can't bump old topics, we can't make new topics because someone 3 years ago made one exactly like that. That's what I'm getting at.
ikeforever
Well why don't the Tip.it staff make a search function so you can see if you are about to post and second topic of the same thing.
Laikrob
Moved to FU&S. Laikrob, Tip.It Moderator. You're accusing me of bigotry, how ironic. It's a nice attempt at argument, but your responses are facile and asinine, if not diatribe. Who's arrogant now?
jemathonical
Well why don't the Tip.it staff make a search function so you can see if you are about to post and second topic of the same thing. There is a search button, up the top of the page. Well of course most topics woiuld have been posted before. I say just make it anyway, topics recycle every 6 or so months and in that time we get new members in that can add in their thoughts. ^Sir Jem 05-The Bunny Drinking Blog?^ Click it! Laikrob
The search function is not great. After TGR (the great rollback), it only finds topics created or replied to after that event. tripsis
People definitely do need to be more understanding when it comes to old topics being brought up again. And as Laikrob accurately mentioned, the Search function only works for threads that have been created or posted on after the rollback. What people fail/refuse to realize is that flaming a thread about a topic that has already been discussed is more pointless than creating the thread in the first place.. - 99 fletching | 99 thieving | 99 construction | 99 herblore | 99 smithing | 99 woodcutting - - 99 runecrafting - 99 prayer - 125 combat - 95 farming - - Blog - DeviantART - Book Reviews & Blog

Jimmyw3000
I dont think there's any rule against bumping an old topic that's still relevant such as tintin113's topic about "I bet you never knew" facts. Topics about updates/topical issues of that time should be left alone. Atm, i dont want to hear about your christmas of 2004 or april fools. It has nothing relevant to the current topical issues, or time of year.

Maybe we need a rule about not being rude to an unknowing user, then? :-k ... Being unable to build a topic because an old one is too buried just stinks. :? (Yeah, I know, a hair extreme... But I'm grasping at straws for some kind of fix here. :anxious: ...) ~D. V. Devnull and normally with a cool mind.(Warning: This user can be VERY confusing to some people... DarkDude
There is nothing wrong with bumping an old topic if you are posting something which adds to the discussion. If you make a topic about something that has been discussed recently then it will be locked (as in the last 5 or so pages). If it is discussing a similar thing to another topic but it is different enough to warrant a seperate topic then it wil be left open as long as it doesnt turn into what the other topic was about. If you are making a topic about something that was discussed a while ago then it will most likely be left open, depends on what the subject is.
