A new guitar?

I want to get a new guitar around christmas. Maybe with my grant in Jan...

Can anyone recommend me something to start out with? I have a stratocaster atm but not really liking it, very thin sound. I've been looking at the Ibanez GAX30 which looks pretty hench - don't want anything expensive, but just a nice clean, thick and warm sound. Probably £150 tops?

Already got plenty of amps and stuff here so that's no problem!

I would be careful with picking out an Ibanez because most of the models (especially the GAX30) break apart easily. If you want a better guitar, check out the Laguna models because they not only have a nice ring, but is a perfect starter guitar IMO.

If you have a fender stat, the tone isn't going to get much better than that. You just need to learn how to get a good tone using your amp (which is the main factor in how you sound). If you're playing through a squire, thats not really a good place to be as they are cheaply made. The best starter guitar for under £150 IMO is the Yamaha Pacifica. If you have a good amp, you can get great tone out of almost any guitar.

Not sure what style of music, I want to be pretty versatile because it's gonna be for playing over stuff produced on a computer, maybe some dnb/breaks etc - so i'll need something that can do a lot of things. Not sure really. Hahah.

I've got a big marshall amp/cab and a few smaller amps which arn't great. I dunno, they're not mine - my dad has played for probably 20 years but only ever played stratocasters! I'm probably more geared to just a sort of rock sound - nickelback and whatnot. Nothing too filthy and nothing too weak, just a full-bodied sound. Also got plenty of paid software but that's probably not as good...

Yeah. I'm pretty beginner.

Your budget probably isn't high enough for the sort of guitar you seem to want, something like a Les Paul or a Gibson SG.

Your best bet is to talk to people you know who have guitar experience and get them to recommend one.

Or go to a music shop and ask one of the workers, especially in small specialist music shops, they should know what they are talking about and will be able to assist you well.

A Les Paul seems to be your best bet, really. Fatter sound, plenty of diversity and not overly expensive. You might be able to find an alright Epiphone one for £150 if you're lucky.

yeah, i've been recommended an Epiphone. will have a look for second hand because as long as they're not overused it doesn't matter to me! Looks like either of the two can be found second hand for a decent price so i'll check them out. Some are 100...

Should be okay I guess. :)

If you have a strat, you could change the pickups and strings to change the tone around.

I got my first guitar, a Gibson SG for 200$ at http://www.musiciansfriend.com !

I would recomend either a SG, or a Les Paul... They both have a nice tone, and can be used for a lot of things

I hate to be a semantic [wagon], but I'm saving you from possible future humiliation by pointing out that the guitar you purchased is most definitely not a Gibson SG.

In other words, SG's go for $1000+. Looks like you got screwed.

Hm no, you could get an SG for under $100. The model has little to do with the price of the guitar, it's the manufacturer that basically decides 80% of the pricetag. In Gibson's case however, just because you pay a small fortune for one of their guitars doesn't mean it's gonna be a quality guitar, so you will get screwed nonetheless.

Oh, I am sorry if I goofed when I said Gibson, the guitar is made by Epiphone, a company owned by Gibson... one of the reasons SG's are so darn expensive, is that Gibson, the original maker of them, can charge so much for a sweet looking, nice playing guitar! Sure, my guitar isn't as good as a Gibson-named one, but I like the sound, and the looks... I am not going to drop a couple K down on a guitar that I won't play pro with... (I don't have that kind of cash)

Go for a Gibson Melody Maker. They're the one guitar that Gibson makes that isn't overpriced. They're quite nice, really.

Oh dear sir, mayhaps you ought to have taken the time to read through this 17-post monster of a thread before posting lest you look like a dribbling fool.

Seriously, it's the 5th bloody post. As for pedals, nope he doesn't.
