stevepole
Personally I'd go with the ipod. I"m a little bias though, 4 out of the 5 portable media players I've had have been ipods and the other being a zune.
Sbrideau
The iriver is just going to lock up on you in 6 months/ a year. My brother had that happen to his, well 2 of his, first one got locked up, he had to send it for repairs, they couldn't unlock it, they sent a new one for a small fee, same happened with it. Same with Ipods, I heard a lot that they tend to break not long after the warranty finishes. I'd go with the creative zen if I were you, lots of good reviews about it, and my youngest brother had one for years and it never broke or gave him trouble. I personally have been using a sandisk one for years.
l0rd
From experience, I've had alot of trouble with non-ipod music players, while my 1st gen ipod mini has been just fine for years collecting dust in my closet. Get the ipod. [iNSERT "I R EATIN TEH SHIX ATM" BILL COSBY SIGNATURE GIF HERE, LOL]

Get the ipod. Of course it works sitting in your closet. Without use, there's nothing to break. I've had problems with both iPods I've had. The screens aren't really durable, and the hard drive failure rate is around 10-20% (stats from 2005, found on Wikipedia). Plus, the screen scratches incredibly easily, as I quickly found out with both of mine. I would go with the Zune if I had to pick. It's about the same price as the iPod (at least for the 120GB model), but it's more durable, looks nicer, and can do more (FM radio anyone?). So the UI isn't perfect, it's still easy to use and get to what you want. I would much prefer a Zune over a new iPod [hide=Funny Quotes]So you sucker punched a kid in the back of the head? urbestfreind
I've had two Zunes, the first ones lcd failed upon opening it from the box, the 2nd's hard drive failed after around 6 months. My iPod was DOA after being late to be shipped, that was just wonderful. On the whole though, I've yet to meet someone with a Zune that was unhappy with it, save you. I know many people who are unhappy with their iPod though. I suppose it's a matter of personal preference. As long as you spring for the extended warranty, go for what you like to use more. For me that's the Zune. This argument goes back to Mac vs Windows too (After all, iPod = Apple = Mac, Zune = Microsoft = Windows). There are differences and similarities between the two, but it depends on your preference, and if you want to belong to the majority (Windows, iPod) or the minority (Mac, Zune). tl;dr - To each, His own. Don't compare them to Mac Vs. Windows, they're two totally different things. Anyways Zune is much more similar to an iPod in relation to the differences between Windows and Mac. whiteguy
@urbestfreind Thanks, but i didn't mention the Zune, i mentioned the Zen. I will take a look at it anyway. I think i'm going for the Zen. My Last.fm

urbestfreind
The ipod nano uses flash memory.. And in no way its a Apple Vs. Microsoft argument either, and since you don't seem to know the Zune isn't supported on macs. Flash memory can fail too, although it's less likely, I've just never gotten an mp3 player that used flash-based memory. Plus, why spend $150 on a flash based 8GB nano when I spend $100 more that and get a HD-based iPod or Zune with 15x the storage (120GB)? I'll crack the screen before the warranty goes bad, so I'm good. And it is equated to the argument, because you have some people who can't live without one, some who can't live without the other, and some people who don't really care which one, they may just go with the majority. I know they're different, and the Zune isn't supported on Macs, but that doesn't take away the validity of the point that they do the same thing with different appearances/methods. It's a user preference. People will naturally prefer one over the other, whether it's because of problems in the past or a deeply rooted hatred for a brand, but they both will allow you to accomplish the same goal - store and listen to music, but how you do it (click wheel or touch-sensitive D-pad, start menu or dock) varies a lot. If you don't like the Zune, go with the Zen. My teacher had one for a year and a half without problems, and my friend said his is fine. I haven't heard anything bad about them either, so it's probably a safe choice, although I have no experience with one. It's a cheaper alternative, but i looked at the player and I see no problems with it, aside from a high price/GB ratio. [hide=Funny Quotes]So you sucker punched a kid in the back of the head? CowsEatFood
I would go with the zen x-fi. I currently have the "zen" and its working fine for me. I have also had the zen v before. I have had 2 problems with each of them though. Zen -It gets the "white screen on hold" syndrome, but its better than the white screen of death on some people's. -The sound gets delayed whenever I convert videos. Zen v -The battery life was pretty bad on mine. -Freezes every few months (one of the freezes caused it to die, which lead me to get the zen). This one kicked [beep] though. It has survived multiple mower experiences and drops. And my sister has had hers for... 3 years maybe? And no problems except for 1 freeze up. But too bad you weren't getting one over the weekend. You could have gotten a 16 gig for $130 straight from the company. 16/32 also has wi-fi I think.

I have had 2 problems with each of them though. Zen -It gets the "white screen on hold" syndrome, but its better than the white screen of death on some people's. WSOD's have been fixed. White screen is only in individual cases. All models crash occasionally. -The sound gets delayed whenever I convert videos. That's not the Zen's fault, it's yours. Same goes for all models. The Zen V is a lot older and quite a different player. Your personal experiences aren't representative aswell. And to all you "the X player got me troubles" people. That's a useless comment. Those "N=1" statements hold no meaning. Allright, my personal opinion. I'd pick the Zen X-Fi due to the fact it gives a lot of bang for the buck. It's easily expandable by cheap SD-cards, and it has some neat features. The Clix is a very good player aswell, and a close second, imo. The iPod lacks features and sound quality. Wouldn't go for it. It has absolutely nothing special, except for the hype.
