WMA -> MP3?

Not sure if i should be posting in the tech/comp section so move this if need be.

I've recently bought an album which i ripped to my HD, but i really have .wma files. It won't let me edit the tags in winamp, and i'm one of these people who likes their tags to be done correctly. Really i'm after 1 of 2 alternatives:

1. A wma to mp3 converter. The only catch is i don't want to pay for it, so if anyone knows of any free downloadable programs (no illegal stuff here, i want to keep this topic open), let me know. I really don't want to lose any quality, because ripping the cd alone seems to have made the sound quality a little more tinny.

2. Find a torrent for the album and download it. I wasn't sure about this one because i know TIF doesn't support piracy or whatever, so here's proof i do actually own the album...

The album is by Superjoint Ritual, and it's called 'Use Once And Destroy'. If anyone can help me with this i'd be chuffed. Mods - if i've broken any rules then feel free to delete part 2 of my post.

Solution1: So long as they arnt protected WMA's you can use the powerful dBpowerAMP Music convertor. You might need to install an extra codec if WMA support doesnt come as standard.

Solution2: If it wont let you convert to mp3 because the wma is protected then theres a little program that can remove some levels of copy protection from wmas. I cant say what its called on here because it is censored but substitude fudge for something else. Search google for unfudge[Caution: Executable File]

Solution3: Re-rip as mp3 using any number of programs. http://www.snapfiles.com/freeware/gmm/fwcdrip.html

Conclusion: Dont use Windows media player to rip music. Its rubbish.

It really is. In future i won't bother with it, i don't use it for playing music so i don't know why i bothered using it to rip a CD.

I always use iTunes to rip cd's. It's free and it works great.

It also allows you to rip music into AAC format, which is as far as I know superior to mp3.

iTunes is also a great program to get all tags correct. Plus it can automatically organise all your music in a folder of your choice which works great aswell.

VHS & Betamax

VHS was inferior yet it was the one that took the crown. :P

So far the DVD-R/+R is looking the same, DVD-R's are inferior yet at least in britain we can't get enough of them, yet DVD+R's are harder to source than Plutonium... Ok slight exagerration. :P

AAC might be superior but MP3's have already got most of the population captured by the... Well you know.

True enough, but copy protection, subscription services, etc. will move things slowly away from mp3 because it can't be controlled well.

Besides...the ipod is doing fine, which means the aac will still have a large market.

The reason why copy protected files will not take over mp3's for a while is because there is not a de facto standard. If i buy a track from Napster I cannot play it on my ipod for example. Until there is a standard across the board giving full compatability people will always convert to mp3.

DBPowerAmp is very good. I used it for awhile until i switched to Atrac formats. Atrac is a lot less well known than WMA or mp3 but i like it over the other two. The format used to be **** but the latest version Atrac3Plus is very nice. You can squeeze alot of songs into limited memoy at 64kps and the quality is still great. Downside is that the softwares that are used to encode it isnt that great but usually i only encode a file from cd twice. One into FLAC or equivalent another into Atrac at 256kps.
