Lag is frustrating

Actually, most of the time it's tolerable. But not when you're SOLOING A BOSS THAT KILLS IN MERE SECONDS!

Ugh. I just went on a sara GWD trip. First kill, fine. Second kill, I got her to about half HP. Then the lag hit. Game froze for about ten seconds. I figured this would be a short burst of lag, in which case Zil and I would lurch forward a bit but overall no harm done. Well, the game locked up for about 10 seconds total. I'd estimate 5 or so of those were zil walking towards me based on her location, my location, and the flag on my minimap. Game gets responsive again. I'm in a corner. HP indicator is flashing red. I say OH SHI- and click my teletab. Bam. 15. Dead.

I only lost about 800k thankfully. The crazy thing is I normally never lag. I go to the GE on HD mode everyday with no issues at all. it's like one in a million me getting lag, and of course it strikes right while I'm in the deadliest zone of runescape.

Yea, I know this is somehow my fault to you guys. I don't care. I'm annoyed and I feel like [bleep]ing and moaning for a bit while my pulse returns to normal. in b4 "its your fault stop whining". I know I'm whining. I don't care.

Yep, lag sucks.

Just remember it's your fault, not Jagex's. It's like driving to someone's house and then getting angry at them because your car wasn't fast enough and took a long time to get there. Get a better computer and internet connection and the lag will be gone.

It still sucks, though. But so does poverty and the fact that I don't have 100 billion in my bank :-#

Side note: All of the hilts were obtained on a crappy dial up connection that DCed once every 20-30 minutes and resulted in a total loss of ~45m.

Yeah, lag is really frustrating, I must agree.. I wasn't really happy either when I got a massive lag/blackout at Chaos Tunnels Black Demons while I was Prayer flashing. Of course I got it when the Prayer was off. When I was able to do something, I was at 15-20 HP.. Luckily I slammed on the Prayer in time. Whew.

latency is a mutual thing. saying that kind of lagg is one party's fault is like saying your house is further from my house, than my house is from your house"

but if you're talking about simply having a computer that can't handle running runescape, then yeah, that'd be a problem on your end, though again, not really a fault. some people just can't afford high performance computers.

Latency is a mutual thing. Lag is not. Yes, it's sort of Jagex's fault that their servers are too far from Roberts, but latency is an average of 20-40 miliseconds, nothing big to worry about. Lag and DCs (which is what he's really talking about, not lag) are because of one of the two:

#1: His computer, which cannot handle runescape

#2: His internet connection, which is not reliable enough for runescape

Say what you want, it's HIS fault.

well first of all, yes lag is a pain in the [wagon].

secondly, after the graphical updates (when they first came out, literally moments after the update was made) me and my brother could both play full screen hd mode with no problems at all, no lag etc. however after jagex turned all the servers offline, when they did eventually come back online, they were laggy as hell. so i would assume that something there is the fault of a 3rd party (not necessarily jagex however), so it is not always your computer that is the problem.

you may also need to check if anyone using the same line is connecting to the internet, because if it is, then you will get lag. usually even the nearest 3/4 houses will be using the same 'line' to connect to the mainline for the internet.

his internet connection is not necessarily his fault, as the isp could be doing maintainance meaning a reduction in the capacity of information it can receive/send, or it may just be a busy time, so the isp is having to use more servers etc. Do not say it IS HIS fault, as it is not always his fault, equally however it is not jagex's fault.

If his internet connection is not reliable for runescape, it is HIS fault. Pay more to upgrade to a higher tier. I have NEVER had problems with ISP lag, and despite servicing thousands of computers for decades, I have never seen bandwidth problems from a major ISP that would result in lag in Runescape. However, wireless connections CAN lag - hence why I run a CAT 6 cable to my laptop. Old, cheap networking hardware CAN lag. Old, slow computers DO lag. Problems with your wiring CAN cause lag. All of those are things that YOU are responsible for fixing. So fix them and the lag will go away.

there is such as thing as server side lagg. haven't you ever been with a team killing something and all of you had a lagg [bleep]e at once? For instance, once at bandos the server lagged and displayed him as alive after he did his death animation. all of us saw that, and it is very unlikely our computers didn't simultaneously mishandle the code in exactly the same way, thus it was a problem on jagex's end.

Yea, I've had that happen 3 or 4 times in my RS carrier. Those rare lag [bleep]es ARE Jagex's fault, but are incredibly rare and not that big of a deal. I've never even DCed from one, it's just a quick freeze for ~.5 seconds. ::'

#1: His computer, which cannot handle runescape

#2: His internet connection, which is not reliable enough for runescape

1) My pc kicks [wagon]. If it can handle WoW it can handle runescape.

2) Like I said, my internet is great. I almost never lag. I just got unlucky and got the one in a million lag [bleep]e at the worst possible moment.

Really? What server were you on. There's usually an angry tirade of RSOFers after each server glitch. Like I said, I've had it happen mabye 4 times during the years I've played RS, and each lasted less then a second.

perhaps it is just me, the circumstances, or the server i play on, but they are actually fairly frequent, and i've verified that they are indeed serverside because my friends and I find it very funny to remark on any noticeable lagg [bleep]es we have, and in many instances we all remark on them at the same time. it isn't even always during monster hunting trips where we are in one location -- sometimes we are all skilling independently, or several of us are playing castle wars and some are off doing their own thing, and those people are far away locations remark on it as well.

i have had several very, very bad server lagg experiences, one which affected around a dozen people at once, while KBD hunting. as soon as we logged in, we all had action lagg, where our actions were very delayed (some said up to thirty seconds) aswell as freeze-frame lagg (where the frames do not show as fast as they should) aswell as other very strange things. many of us were randomly logged out, while in combat (yes, while in combat) and then when we logged back in it was still processing our previous actions (i had clicked teleport before it logged me out, when i logged back in i was at the lair, then the magic book tab opened and i teleported). it was very strange and i have never had that happen to me again, but it was very, very awful, and did cost a few of us equipment

Do you all have the same ISP or what? I have Comcast, and I've NEVER had those problems, despite playing on and testing many different connections. I play on virtually every server, usually Australian or finnish for fewer people, despite living in Central US.

i think our definitions of lagg [bleep]e differ.

for example, graph degree of lagg versus time, and we're both talking about a [bleep]e as in a shape like

__/\__

but i think we're talking about this at different scales, the graphs of which would still look the same though with different magnitudes

IE a small degree of lagg over a small time interval is what i'm talking about,

and you characterize a lagg [bleep]e as a high degree of lagg over a longer time interval

we say lagg [bleep]e whenever there is a noticeable pause, jitter, etc with our gameplay, perhaps a frame that sticks for a quarter of a second

i think we've drifted away from the point -- i originally brought this up to prove that there can be serverside lagg, but my instances of it were not noticeable enough to greatly impact gameplay

I was using an incorrect definition; lag is when your computer takes several seconds to relay messages to and from Jagex servers, resulting in a delayed response to anything you do in game. I've never had that happen, it's all the fault of your ISP and servers between you and Jagex. A disconnect is when some of your packets are lost or the game server hiccups, and the TCIP packet flow is interrupted, causing the game to freeze and nothing you do to have a response. I've had that happen a few times during my RS career, and it can be identified as a Jagex problem when everyone around you goes 'ugh lag'.
