I painted sum stuff... [UPDATE with CANDLE]

Smooth rocks aren't unheard of . . .

I would just lessen the intensity of the lighter shades, it doesn't exactly look shiny but it's a bit too bright. It looks fine otherwise, good texture.

The rock is kinda like me. Shiny.

Try to roughen it up. By that I mean, you need add uneven light tones, which will show the it is rocky. Especially dark blacks.

Even if it was a pebble, it would be gray, and gray doesn't reflect the light THAT much. Take a look at real rocks, like scoria and pumice and stuff.

its good, but it is very 2D. where the light source (based on what you have) is good on the top, but as it comes down (more the middle part) the light is going to bend and wrap around the rock, which you dont have, it just stops making it feel very 2D, if you dont know what i mean i'll make some edits to show what i mean

It needs to be a lot more jagged and rough, as other posters have alluded to. Also the way you shaded it isn't right. You pretty much went dark > light. Since rocks are jagged (it looks like you're going for more of a boulder rock than a smooth stone, anyways, due to the imperfect shape), you need to have shadows and highlights throughout the rock. Example:

The rock doesn't just gradually get lighter. There are shadows and highlights on all the grooves, dents, edges, etc.

You'll notice in my reply that I said "it looks like you're going for more of a boulder rock than a smooth stone, anyways, due to the imperfect shape." The stones in your image all have nice rounded edges and are more or less ovals. Now look at the outline in ipkjooo's drawing. See how the edges aren't very smooth? Instead they're jagged and rough. The stone doesn't resemble an oval at all. That's what made me think he was going for more of a rock/boulder approach than a smooth stone approach.

^ Agreed with tripsis.

Also, I don't think it really looks like a 3D object at the moment. It's quite hard to explain, but because of the shading it looks very 2D. I'd try to make it seem more real and have the shading 'curve' around it more, and make it look less like a single colour shape with a gradient applied to it.

I think it looks okay. A few things though:

I think the bottom looks very sloppy. The bottom part is melted, but the top is still in tip top shape? You need to have those 'drips' throughout the candle, not just on the bottom. And the ones on the bottom look way too huge anyway. Examples:

[hide=]#1 - Little drips

#2 - Bigger drips like you had. But notice how there isn't just a pile of drips on the bottom.. there are also drips on the whole candle.

The top of the candle needs to be shaded and so does the flame. Also, I know the background probably wasn't your focus, but to prevent the image from looking too plain, you should at least add in some quick and dirty shadows.

Pretty good though - keep it up!

Why did you have to bring me and that old picture into this? :wall:

Anyways on topic. I find the rock to look more like a blending exercise because of how smooth the transition is. It does not have any sort of depth to it. Some parts are a little better than others but it is mostly the same.

And the candle, well first off I would say always use sketch lines, It allows you to see the entire thing take shape. Second I would give my self some sort of a color difference as to where the ground is... but that is kind of a personal preference. The lighting is odd all over, the candle gives off a different light than what is on the candle and just other little things. The base has odd shading (which I could say for my picture as well.) Lastly I would say just look at a picture of a candle to get the general idea to match up.

Hope this helps some.

Chris
