Oscar Grant (police brutality)

even if guns are carried by the common citizen the police will make sure they can outgun any enemy they face.

hell... usually they can't.

OH S***! He/she/it is back!

Then why do things like SWAT or specially armed task forces exist? To outgun and outdo the enemy using severe firepower and intelligent tactics. Letting the public have access to better firepower than what is meant to protect us from crime and harm is pure stupidity.

This happened close to where I live and is pretty much what everyone is talking about right now. I think it's sad and disgusting. The part that bothers me the most is that because he is a police officer, he can pretty much just get away with resigning (at least for the time being). If it were anyone but a police officer, they would probably be arrested/charged right away. But for whatever reason this guy can get away with it because he has a badge??? I find that to be unbelievable.

I agree that police should pay for the consequences of their actions, but at the same time, you have to look at the long term result. We don't know all the details of the situation.

It doesn't look like it to me, but it is POSSIBLE that the officer in fact did have a good reason to shoot the man. Every time a police officer shoots anyone, there are tons of inquiries as to whether it was in fact necessary, they don't automatically need to string up the cop because he shot someone.

If the police know that as soon as they kill someone they will be pulled through the grinder over police brutality, it leaves them little motivation to use the gun when it is really needed.

I *love* how some of the protest revolved about the killing being race inspired. Probably one or two of the letters to the editor too, I don't remember. That's a topic for another day though...

The most sane letter today had to do with the upset about this killing, and how Oakland's homicide rate is completely ignored over this one.

Supposed to be a big protest rally tomorrow in Sn Jose tomorrow, I also heard there having thing for him in cities around the country...

Just because the guy is a police officer, he doesn't have to testify in Court? The guy NEEDS to go to court and testify, investigation or not, there were 2 people who SAW him and video-tapped the death. Prefect evidence. When he does go to court I hope he doesn't get out lightly for the crime he did.

I thought the officer who shot him was now arrested pending exact charges to be released?

Careful, you don't know the whole picture. It is not perfect evidence, there is no such thing.

According to the articles I read this morning, he was just arrested today.

There is a video of the incident. In fact, there are about 5 different videos from different angles.

It appears as if the guy was sort of resisting - I mean, he was lying face down on the ground, maybe he pulled his arm away or something, but the officer simply removed his gun and shot him. There is absolutely no way it was necessary - he had NO possible reason to shoot him.

The only argument here is whether he shot him deliberately or not.
