January 12, 200917 yr 45-50c is a normal operating temperature under load for air cooled desktop processors. To maximize the life of the processor, the idle temps should be around 30-35 (again, you can push this way lower, to around 15-20c with water cooling, but for most people this will be a waste of money). You got all temps at 40 so that's nothing to worry about. Also if you run benchmarking tools, or programs like SuperPi that test the raw power of the processor... It will climb extremely high due to 100% usage, even up to 60+ momentarily. That's normal, just don't run it at those temperatures all day.
January 12, 200917 yr Ok, it seems prety stable at 54 now is that still to high? I'm going to let it test a little bit longer though. (The thermal paste I got seemed pretty [cabbage], best buy were out of arctic silver stuff so I bought some "white thermal grease" from the only computer computer shop that had some. I will probably get some better stuff later. Not really a good idea, those cheap generic pastes tend to crap out over time. 54 isn't that bad, but I've got a $17.99 cooler + $5 paste = 40c MAX after running wPrime (super stressing program, both cores at 100%) for 5 hours on a warm summer day on my E8500 OCed to 3.66. Oh, and don't stress out about it too much. I did stupid stuff on my first build too. January 13, 200917 yr If you are applying new paste, i hope you removed the old paste from the cpu and fan correctly. I hope you didn't just put some new onto the cpu without removing the old stuff. And use coretemp instead of speedfan. Grrr... Back from holidays and what do i get? Sick! Flu, headache, sore throat... Lol.
