January 15, 200917 yr Yes, we are very epic. A trusted made told me of a website, which has high quality videos of I show that I like, for free. He told me he used it all the time, no problems. So, I go to the site, and download a video off there. Before I get to watch it, I go out for a bit, then my mate calls to chill. I go and hang with him, and told him that I downloaded. His first reaction was laughing at me, and told me that I had probably downloaded several viruses. I asked why, and he said that the site is dodgy, without a torrent (still have no clue what that is -.-). He told me I was going to get dangerous as viruses. So yeah, I'm [cabbage]ting myself, while he's laughing his pants. And here is my Anti Virus being epic. I get home, and scan my computer with Trend Micro Pro 2009 (we bought a 2 year pro subscription or something), and I get nothing. Absolutely nothing. I thought that that was wrong, and used another Anti Virus, NoAdware 2004. 5 year difference, and that kicks Trend Micro's [wagon]. I found about 20 viruses that weren't related to that, and about 3 that were. I deleted them, and I'm still not sure if I'm fine... My sister was using my Laptop, so if I screw my computer up...Her fault!    So, onto the questions: [*:3lre9pqp]Should I use another Anti Virus? [*:3lre9pqp]What the hell is a torrent? [*:3lre9pqp]Where can I download these torrents? My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.
January 15, 200917 yr 1. yes, nod32 if you want to pay, avira antivir if you don't. 2. bit torrent (shortened to torrent, sort of) is a protocol for sharing files between people. it is commonly used to share pirated stuff though, so im not sure if its appropriate here. basically the file that wants to be shared is split into hundreds of sections. 1 person starts with the file, and people connect to there computer and download different sections. the people who downloaded sections can then download other sections they don't have of others who have them sections, untill they ahve all the sections (complete the download). people connect to 'trackers' to learn who has sections they don't, and there ip address (so they can connect to them and download sections). 'trackers' are just servers that track who is downloading the file and tell other people to connect to them to download. bit torrent is similar to the technology behind other peer to peer programs such as limewire. for more details see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitTorrent_(protocol) heres a few ways to explain it: -person A has parts 1 to 5 of the file. -person B connects to A and downloads parts 1 and 2 -person C connects to A and downloads parts 3 to 5 -persons B and C give each other their sections (so they both have 1-5) -Persons B and C now have 100% of the file. person A only gave out file once, but 2 people got it. instead of everyone (thousands of people in some cases) connecting to 1 single computer and download it all from there (which would take ages to give it to everyone and probably crash the server), everyone only downloads parts from everyone else. Imagine your teacher told you to tell all 1000 students in your school to go to the gym at midday the next day to receive there reports. you could tell all 1000 students individually but it would take you forever. instead, you could tell 1 person and tell them to tell all their friends, and get their friends to tell all their friends. you could tell this to 1 person from each group (tell 1 jock, tell 1 nerd etc). if they do tell their friends everyone would eventually know to go to the gym at midday the next day. except maybe a few loners who have no friends, but you get what i mean. 3. google 'torrent'
January 15, 200917 yr OH [cabbage]! HELP ME GUYS! This is me, I cannot access my Laptop at all. I tried download Nod32, but my Laptop froze, I turned it off and on, and when I logged on, I was greeted with my computer not working at all. My little Windows Vista Sidebar for XP was full of random crap that I had not typed (Notepad had "This [cabbage] Pwnz"). Guys help me! I can't do anything! My Task Bar won't show, I can't access the Start Menu, when I tried going onto the internet, and finish downloading Nod32, it didn't work. I'm going to get dad to take it up to a PC specilaist first thing tomorrow, see if I can actually use it ever again  . My TIF pass word was changed too, which is why I am using this brand new account, and this dumb conmputer can't access Hot Mail! I'm going to try another site, but my hopes are not high.... Please guys, the fate of my Laptop is in the balance, it has un replaceable files on it :(
January 15, 200917 yr  sounds like you have got yourself a virus alright. make sure the computer specialist knows of the un replaceable files, because otherwise he will just reinstall windows if he cant work out whats wrong (probably)
January 15, 200917 yr I do indeed :/ Thanks, I will tell him that :) Oh, and I have no clue what has happened to my Tip.It account, as all of my other accounts on other sites are fine... Incase it means anything here is the site: [hide=WARNING! THIS SITE IS DANGEROUS! DO NOT DOWNLOAD ANYTHING FROM IT! IT IS FOR REFERENCE ONLY! January 15, 200917 yr I would suggest avast! It comes with an on-acsess scanner which will scan scripts in most web browsers and can tell you that the file you are looking at / downloading has a virus ( or other malicious software ) for that matter. It probably is against the rules to say this (if it is, a mod/admin is free to edit this bit out ;)) - these are two good torrent DL sites Piratebay , and Mininova. Piratebay has a comment section on each torrent download page so you can see if the download has anything malicious concealed in there. Good luck with your computer - by 'irreplaceable' files, what do you mean? Sorry if it sounds like I'm being nosy. It might be even better if you have a new start on your computer which will be hopefully cleaned out of anything bad. 2257AD.TUMBLR.COM
January 15, 200917 yr Reboot, hit f8 repeatedly while it boots. Select boot in safe mode. Run your AV (anti virus) as well as any anti mal/ad/apy ware programs you have. If they find anything note the name. Once complete reboot and see if it reappears, if it does google the name(s) of the items found in the scans. You should then be able to follow the guides on how to remove it/them. He said that my dads computer was ready, so that means I can take my Laptop up to get fixed :) LB: The files I'm prob's going to lose are mainly programs, photo'sk and other 20GB worth of stuff. I haven't backed anything up apart from my iTunes, my Photography, and some Podcasts :/. And that Torrent sounds like what I am looking for, where it sees if there are any nasties :) Joe, I can't access anything on my Laptop, it freezes after start up.
January 15, 200917 yr In short, most torrents are illegal and your ISP can fine you/cut you off if you use them. You can use them for legal stuff, though most people associate torrenting with illegal file sharing. "In the beginning, the universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move."
January 15, 200917 yr In short, most torrents are illegal and your ISP can fine you/cut you off if you use them. You can use them for legal stuff, though most people associate torrenting with illegal file sharing. Alright, thanks. I don't intend to use it Illegally, just to stop all those dangerous bastards getting onto my computer again. And I got it running is Safe Mode, and I am scanning it now. I'll post my progress soon, permitting Trend Micro actually works  EDIT: While it was doing the Scan (still is), my Screen Saver popped up. And I thought, should I back up stuff, or will I have already infected the files? I really just want Photo's.
January 15, 200917 yr In short, most torrents are illegal and your ISP can fine you/cut you off if you use them. You can use them for legal stuff, though most people associate torrenting with illegal file sharing. Its about 50:50, there are a lot of patches, demos, linux distros, etc on torrent sites. Its just the ones offering something which should be paid for, for free are more popular. As for retrieving the files, you can but I would let the scan finish first to check if they are infected. But if there not infected you should be fine to copy them off, just scan them before you open any of the file on another PC. Good luck. Going to need a full System Resort prob's :/ And does anyone have the link to Avria? http://www.free-av.com/en/download/1/av ... virus.html Thanks :) And Woo Hoo! I got my account back! I had to use my dad's seconday computer to get onto Homtail :P My relaxation method involves a bottle of lotion, beautiful women, and partial nudity. Yes I get massages.
January 15, 200917 yr Sounds like your "mate" told you to go on there on purpose. Real trust-worthy huh. In short, most torrents are illegal and your ISP can fine you/cut you off if you use them. You can use them for legal stuff, though most people associate torrenting with illegal file sharing. At least in uTorrent you can run an encrypter which doesn't allow the ISP to see it as a "torrent" file :) . Helps if your ISP throttles torrent traffic and the like. I won't say anything further though. :-$ Alright, thanks. I don't intend to use it Illegally, just to stop all those dangerous bastards getting onto my computer again. You know you're only using that to download stuff, right? If you're downloading TV shows than that is illegal. Not like I think it really matters (considering I have a ton of illegal software on here :/) But I thought you should know just in case. Torrents are quite safe though, although certainly not foolproof. Be sure to read the comments under the download to see if it is a good quality, trusted, ect.
January 16, 200917 yr My guess is that this is a day late and a dollar short, but the best defense for these kinds of things is a good offense. Regardless of who told you what about any site, don't trust it. And if you do visit it, do it on a machine that you don't mind turning to scorched earth. Some torrents are nasty business, and most of the problems with machines I've had to fix have dealt with those. Whoever suggested NOD32 is right; it's pretty good as far as AV goes. Just so you know, there are some viruses out there that can come back through System Restore points, so when you get a chance to, disable those. To further clarify on torrents: A way to share files without the need of a centralized server. I use torrents for Linux ISOs since it seems to be quicker than a direct download, but be wary: people will always try to peg it as something bad and evil. Hope your machine's restored to a usable state now. Back up your data now to avoid a major loss should something like this happen again.
