Steam

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased the Orange Box from Steam, and when I try to play one of the games (half life 2, portal, TF2) my computer freezes and it says my driver has recovered. I just updated my driver, which one of my friends said I should do, but it hasn't made a bit of difference apparently. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. If any other details are needed I will try to put them up.

Note: it is only these games, any other online games (Runescape, SL, etc) work perfectly.

do you meet minimum requirements? also did you download it through steam or buy the orange box in a store and load it from the dvd

He said he bought it from stream, I think it would be safe to make the claim that he bought the orange box through stream. maybe this link will help?

Which driver? Your computer needs drivers for every single piece of hardware it uses (Keyboard mouse screen graphics card hard drive network card sound card CD/DVD drive speakers...) so just saying "The driver" isn't really specific enough.

Assuming you're on about your graphics driver, try re-downloading and reinstalling it.

It'd also be useful to know the rest of your computer's specs.

Easiest way to find out specs is to go start run and type 'dxdiag'.

Surprised no one has mentioned this.

Go here

Select the orange box from the list, install the addon and done, shows you if it will run on your computer.

I find system requirement labs is often inaccurate. For example it says my computer will only just run Red Alert 3, when in actually fact it runs it fine on highest with a decent framerate.

Don't see it on that list, and I don't know how to check my graphics card in the DxDiag thing.

Edit: also that site froze on me. :twss:

You go to the display tab to see your graphics card name in dxdiag

It doesn't say anything about graphics cards.

Edit to the post below me: Oh that's the graphics card tab? I thought it was system. Anyway its "Intel® 82945G Express Chipset Family"

There's your problem. That's an integrated card which isn't powerful enough to run orange box games.

Oh well, I got the orange box as a christmas present so I didn't actually buy it. I still wish I could play it though.

So new question, where can I get a better graphics card, and how to put it in my computer.

Do you have a PCI or PCI Express slot? I have >>card<< which runes UT3/TF2/Guild Wars with no lag.

8500GT is a very meh card. Should spend $30 more and get a 9600GS.

The 9600 series cards are amazing for the price. I bought my 9600GT for $140 back in July and I can say it's worth every penny since the price dropped.

I was going to eat hot dogs for dinner tonight. I think I will settle for cereal.

This is a PC and not a laptop right?

Might be worth checking how many watts your PSU gives. If it's a prebuilt it will probably only just cover what's inside the PC, a lot of the newer cards can be quite power hungry which is a problem if you want to upgrade. Other than that, a 9600GT will do fine for source engine (orange box) games.

It would be nice if you gave us some more damn info. Honestly I don't think I would trust you at this point to even put in a video card.
