Wireless Internet on a Desktop?

Ok, the title may be wrong but i need some help on things,

 

 

 

Well then my brother and myself both use Laptops which can easily recieve wireless internet, but after much discussion we decided to group together and buy a Desktop computer for use between myself and my brother, but we discovered a major problem with the internet connection.

 

 

 

we were looking at buying a All in One computer but then decided against it as it wouldn't gratify both of us,

 

 

 

My brother wants a gaming based computer with high graphics and so fourth without going to in-depth, so he would be able to run clan based computer games easily, without any hitch in graphics department,

 

 

 

and myself would use it when for social networking sites, youtube and runescape etc much like a laptop,

 

 

 

this computer will be for my brothers birthday so he doesn't realise it yet, but i will try it time to time.

 

 

 

But then like mentioned earlier we hit a problem with the internet, the computer would be placed on the 2nd floor permenately in a room between my brother and i. and it will stay there as we have no where else to place it.

 

 

 

so about the internet, we allready have an existing BT Homehub wireless internet, and are not looking to change it any time soon, so the only problem is that "How can we get wireless on a Desktop"

 

 

 

So now i call on you guys for assistance, what should i do?

 

 

 

we were looking into a powerline network system as a solution but we don't have that much information on it sadly,

 

 

 

and also we wouldn't want to loss speed on the internet,

 

 

 

so any help would be appreciated :thumbsup: ,

Easy, you just need to buy a PC with a wireless network card, or buy one and put it into the PC yourself. They cost about £20 or so (when I last checked), though most major computer companies should give you the option to customize your order so that you can have one put in.

Buy a wireless network card (pci) with G or N (depending on what your router supports - check in manual to see).

 

I wouldn't recommend a usb one.

As am I :). Like I said any of the major computer companies such as Dell, HP, Asus etc will offer you the option to have a wireless network card put in.

I have a BT Homehub, I just use a Belkin USB wireless adapter, it works fine. If you're not confident about installing a wireless card into your pc, then a usb one just plugs in and you're away, it's very simple.

USB Adaptors are fine, in some cases, even better than PCI, since you can place them where you want. If you want a USB one, Belkin is probably the best company for them.

Wireless internet and gaming (online gaming that is) aren't the best of friends.

 

Since its wireless you can have issues with drop-out, bad signal and interference.

 

 

 

If your brother is serious about gaming (online) then I would highly recommend you use a wire connection, I've tried the how wireless gaming thing and it sucks.

 

I lost tons of games and had really bad ping due to it (its fine for runescape and browser based games), switched to a ired (its a bit more messy) and never looked back.

If the Home Hub is version 2.0 (Black) then it supports 802.11n

 

 

 

Earlier versions are only 802.11g/b

If the supplied antenna is on a cable, or if you use a USB extension cable for a USB model, then you can hunt for a better signal

You've got to be kidding me, I use wireless all the time (even used to have to connect my xbox 360 through my laptop to get internet, plus I am using wireless internet) and I rarely ever drop out, even with American hosts, so don't discard wireless just because it wasn't working for you.

Nope, not had too many issues with laptop wireless, but that's since I keep them close to the router.

 

Wireless is very situational. It you live in a one two bedroom house where the rooms are close and the walls are thin its great.

 

Add more rooms, a bit more interference and thicker walls and you'll start having issues.

 

 

 

I'll admit the house I live in does have very thick stone walls (I'm talking 2 to 3 feet thick) and is pretty big, but i just thought I would mention wireless internet isn't always the best option. Add the possible issues to the fact that in online games a few extra milliseconds of lag can mean the difference between a kill and a death.

 

 

 

O and Xbox Live has a far worse management of lag/ping then any PC server I've been on.

Linksys I find make really high quality wireless adapters. Amazing range on them.

USB Adaptors are fine, in some cases, even better than PCI, since you can place them where you want. If you want a USB one, Belkin is probably the best company for them.

We used to have the router out in the office, which is in the shed, made of metal. there was about 3 walls (one metal) between my laptop and the modem, and about 20m between them (guess, and I suck at guessing) and I had no issues with lag, even when connecting my 360 through my laptop.
