As far as the penknife thing, get a tetanus shot just to be on the safe side. It should be easy to apply antibiotic ointment and put a band-aid on it. Can't be much worse than having a hole in your side from an appendectomy... But anyways the antibiotic cream and band-aid should keep it clean.
