A pixel piece I did.

Recommended Posts

Ancients staff looks too small and something about the guthan dude doesn't look right :?

Also the dragon scimitar looks too skinny. More detail could be put into it eg the lava is just 1 colour, along with the ground.

Ew. The sithering looks messy and everything quite out of proportion. The shading generally looks quite bad, aside from the guy on the right. The fence as epicly bad contrast as well.

Lower the contrast, and work a bit on anatomy and stuff. Also, something smaller would be nice, but not necessery.

I think the word you're looking for would be saturation.

You could use some more shadows, so your image looks a lot more smooth. You need to use less saturated colors (the ones that look more grey-ish).

You also need to work a bit on anatomy, seems pretty off especially on the guy on the left.

Tha lava. The lava doesn't run straight, it erodes the rock and marks a random path. Also, I'd suggest giving it more textures, shadows and tones.

Wokr on those few things and you got it, don't give up and you'll become a great pixel artist in no-time. :)

I dunno what you're trying out... But I'd stick with the old style you had going.

What I was examining and 'trying out' was the sudden immaturity of Tip.it since 2-3 years ago.

When I posted this image during that time, I recieved a large amount of criticism...yet a fair amount of "I can find ____ is positive, I hope you keep on trying."

Recently, when browsing this forum, I had run into a person's topic about their first 'pixel'. That artist was flamed to hell before he recieved any decent advice. Even then, browsing some more, I had only found one post out of the many I reviewed to have the statement which resembled the idea of "Keep going". The....criticism and the content within it has seemingly gone way downhill since I've last been on.

While I have made myself a prominent artist during my time (or I would think), I had never achieved that standard without the encouragement and help of others*. Despite criticism being a large focus of posts, I feel it is being used way too often and sometimes as a thin excuse to bash another person's art. All I see now is 95% criticism and 5% positive, possibly even less.

I don't want to sound like I'm ranting or flaming at other users. I just feel that we've gotten a little caught-up within ourselves. Art can always be improved on, constructive criticism helps, but the other half of the secret to becoming a great artist is motivation from peers.

It's just that this reason is sadly why I rarely come on Runescape forums or do Runescape related art unless it's for payment, since every other pixel topic ends up as a flame war, usually over a 'newer' artist's pixel art.

Just hoping this message hits home with some users. If it doesn't, then please disregard this post and continue commenting on the original image.

*Yes, AceJack has helped me, which explains the dramatic shift in my shading style. Going from smooth gradients to rocky jagged and noisy textures.

I'd also want to go over some of these posts.

I understand your heart is in the right place, but the introduction, yet subtle could really make an impact on an artist.

The noisy shading style doesn't work and makes the piece too busy.

Agreed with hiimben, I really dislike the shading style. The new image, well, it's too large for one. It looks more like an MS paint doodle than a pixel and, in reference to your past work, seems rushed.

Really that is all I have to say. It's rushed. It doesn't even look half done.

Also I know you've been here for a while. You shouldn't get bent out of shape when you take some criticism. I understand the harsh attitude may wary off new artists but if you've been doing this [cabbage] for over a year at least I don't think you should get worked up about it.

Anyways I would work towards a better style, and stay at a smaller resolution. Maybe try and stray away from runescape being a source material as well, I just can't take some of the runescape pixel art terribly seriously when it's nothing more than a fan art for a badly stylized and boring game. (artistically).

So yeah take it as you will, but I think you've got some working from the ground up to do. You've limited your colors well in some pieces, stick to that. Just don't overdo it with the noise.

I'm totally with Nadril, Don't get worked up just because you got some bad feedback, you don't need to have other peopel tell you your good, as long as you keep working at it you will get good.

I don't think you understand what I'm getting at.

This image was done by me when I first started. When I barely began trying pixeling. This wasn't a recent work, it's infact 2 1/2 years old if the save date is correct.

I'm just a little dissapointed, comparing and contrasting the comments I received when I posted this 2 1/2 years ago, compared to what I receive now on the exact same image. Sure, users would show their discontent, but never to the extent of downright saying 'ew' or 'sucks'. Maybe I am being a little to critical of users, but I was just a little disturbed at some topics I've seen.

I don't know, maybe the times have changed.

if anything i think it's more a thread to show how much the gallery sucks with criticism and has gotten elitist, which being new to the gallery myself, i fully agree with. it seems to all be sigs this sigs that, renders this renders that. "let's hope this fractal thing doesn't become the new thing" yeah that's a fantastic attitude to have when people are trying to show a different kind of work that what you normally see here. from what i've heard, i want the old gallery back.

The *smacks with newspaper* thing isn't meant to be mean or anything. It's just my sense of humor-sorry if it offended you. As for the "positive" critique... I don't point out the faults of an image to be elitist or to "bash people's art". I have a certain view of criticism, you see. I can stand here all day picking through your image to find things you did well, but is that really going to help you? Well... not really. Usually, you'll simply end up repeating the exact same thing you did before! Thus, I point out the mistakes you made so you can improve on those areas. Of course, if I see something you did especially well then I'll mention that, but glossing over your errors to make you feel better about yourself is a waste of both your time and mine. In my opinion, if you can stand for your work to be utterly picked apart by your peers then you shouldn't post it. There is a difference between saying "it sucks" and telling why you think it sucks though...

This is just a spam thread.

I doubt many people remember me. It's also been shown since, well, no one made the speculation until hiimben posted that image.

The purpose of this thread is well summed-up below.

And yes, despite the only subtle differences, the response from the users back then were generally nicer and less critical as a whole than they are now, from what I've experienced.

I didn't mind your post at all. That's why I didn't write anything below it, I must've accidentally quoted you.

Also, if anyone is curious, here were three prominent posts from my thread from when I posted the image years ago.

Its really good. but the guy in the barrows looks fat and has a small head for a body just letting u no...i really like the stance on the wizzy thought keep it up!
Looks good, the ancient staff 'head piece thing'... the purple thingy looks a little small. And the guys fingers shouldnt be shown on the scimmy. It would normally just be the back of the hand
loving the stance of the guy on the right in your big sig.

Thing is I think they need more detail. they are easily big enough for you to customise the ahrims and guthan sets. Try adding some cool stuff and not sticking to what the actual set looks like in runescape.

I think you're strongest at linework rather than shading so try lots of shading to improve.

Oh, I just noticed- the guy in ahrims has a messed up hand (the one holding d scimmy).
