Even 80C is pushing it, and around/under 60C is usually the best to extend the life of your card.

That card shouldn't be at those temps at all. My 4670 (fan cooled, auto) doesn't go above 65C at full load.

 

If it's air cooled, you could raise the fan-speed a bit in CCC.

 

As others say, it won't die because of it, but that card should be in the 40-50s max.

Fan cooled. How do I raise the speed in CCC? I'm in advanced, but I only see the ATI Overdrive which allows the ability to OC the CPU and memory clock.

I'd say that you should be concerned. Maybe you can get a better cooling system? My friend's computer is liquid cooled. Maybe you can look into that?

Laura: In the overdrive section, click the padlock and unlock. Mark the "enable manual fan control", try something like 30% (since i guess it's a really low setting atm) and check if it still runs hot. Apply until you hit your desired cooling vs noise setting.

 

 

 

Killer: That card is a budget card, i wouldn't advice on water cooling until you buy a card for 200$ or more.

If it didn't shut down, it should have started to throttle or if you have defined a temprature setting in the BIOS which would enable it to still keep running.

 

The temp i posted may be a bit off, atleast i remember that info from a couple of years ago.

 

(searched around a bit just now and saw the number 105C (atleast for C2))

Download the latest correct driver for you system(9.2), uninstall the current driver via the controlpanel, reboot, install latest driver, reboot and check again.

 

If this doesn't work, you can download rivatuner and see if that works. If it doesn't, either Dell has some weird restriction, or more likely, you aren't able to control the fan.

Dell is weird with fan control. Try googling "dell fan control", I personally use i8kfan. My laptop GPU never goes over 50, my CPU stays under 45. On my desktop, the GTX 260 hits 41 after serious benchmarking, and my CPU gets to around 31-32 with 22 ambient room temperature with a passively cooled motherboard. I put small\quite\cheap fans in every orifice of the box running slowly, it's whisper silent but moves air like a fan. My friends joke that it might fly away sometime. Big fan (realized it was a pun after I typed it...) of adding as many fans as you can possibly fit. And give it that 6 month cleaning.

Hm. I guess they disabled it then, as this is the newest release. Ah well, I shouldn't be using this computer for long.

Gpu/cpu temperatures can vary between pc's. Not only because there are different types of gpu's and cpu's, but also because the airflow in the pc case can differ.

 

 

 

Still, those temperatures are nothing to worry about at this point. Sure, it's always advisable to keep them as low as possible.. but if there's no option to increase the fan speed or whatsoever, then I'd just let it be.

 

 

 

Also, do know that when you do increase the fan speed.. it might be starting to blow like crazy, resulting in a lot of noise coming from the pc. Most cpu's/gpu's have automatic fan speed nowadays. They blow softly during idle periods, and increase the fan speed under load.

Thanks Joe. I guess it's not really an issue anymore though, as I'm not using this computer. I filed a small courts claim against Dell for amounts not to exceed $3,000. Should I get an OK I will have to fly back to the states, but if they won't refund my money, they sure as hell won't keep it.

ATITool 0.26 / 0.27 -> Settings -> Fan speed -> Set 80-100% constant, some noise will occur but the card stays cool... Runs Radeon 4870 at 32C idle with 80% fan speed constant

4000s then, my 3870 has 9.2 catalysts and theres no option for fan control.
