This topic is for people who have seen the 1978 cult movie Faces of Death...

If you've never heard of it here as an excerpt from wikipedia on it's plot:

Faces of Death (1978), also released under the title The Original Faces of Death, is a mondo film, lasting roughly 105 minutes, which guides viewers through explicit scenes depicting a variety of ways to die and violent acts. It is often billed as Banned in 40 Countries, with that number varying with the years. The film has, in fact, been banned (at least temporarily) in New Zealand, Australia, Norway and Finland. The film was written and directed by John Alan Schwartz (credited as "Conan le Cilaire" for directing and "Alan Black" for writing). Schwartz was also the second unit director, credited this time as "Johnny Getyerkokov". He also appears in one of the segments in this film, as the leader of the alleged flesh eating cult in San Francisco area, and puts in cameo appearances in several other films in this series. This film stars Michael Carr as the narrator, and 'creative consultant' called "Dr. Francis B. Gröss". John Alan Schwartz has gone on record as saying this film's budget was $450,000 and there are estimates that it has grossed more than $35 million worldwide in theatrical releases, not including rentals. It was ranked #50 on Entertainment Weekly's "Top 50 Cult Films of All-Time" in 2000.

So I guess discuss what you guys think about the movie or which parts you think are real and which are just portrayals?

IMO It's a good movie even though it's gotten some bad rep with it's violence. I think the message is good though saying that death can easily be avoided if you use a bit of common sense. Also a very good message about animal cruelty and just how cruel it is.

I remember watching one about 20 years ago (not sure if I watched the original or a sequel). Frankly, the images were pretty disturbing. The ones I remember are: a girl getting hit by the prop of a boat, several of people falling from buildings, a guy who had a car he was working on fall off the jack and onto his leg, and some people cutting open monkey heads (while they were still alive) and eating their brains. I think a lot of it was re-enactments and not real footage, but I'm sure some of it was real.

Alright, so so far I've watched up to after the monkey brains scene.

I do think a lot of the early footage is real (maybe not the surgery?) but all of the animals getting killed certainly was.

I know for a fact the monkey scene was fake, but what they did is actually practiced. Surgeries and autopsies were definitely real... At the end of the vid it has a bonus part where they describe, which parts are real and not. He doesn't go through them all, but I remember him saying that all were either real footage or based on actual stories/events.

I've read about this film before and I just don't get the fascination with it. I find it quite disturbing that people would want to watch a procession of animal and human deaths (I know there are numerous stages parts but there are parts lifted from sources like news footage). I just don't see what is appealing or entertaining about that sort of thing, maybe it's just me.

I'm not gonna watch it, I'm still a wee one =P

But it sounds like a snuff(<- right word?)film - a movie where they actually kill a person/animal for the film (just a myth, so far). Like Greek plays. Like Cannibal Holocaust, that's banned in a few countries (I was wiki'ing and got there, I haven't seen it, or the following) and some Japanese Guinea Pig (...) films.

So it's a cult film, with over the top violent acts of the ways you can die... possibly a gorno. See the "What can't kill you?" thread. Much more depressing.

It's definitely not just you. I find the whole concept very disturbing and it's nothing I would (probably) ever watch.

I just googled it and watched it... First hour was boring and cheesy. Last half hour was gruesome and the most disturbing thing I've ever seen  .

The narrating guy makes some wonderful points about death. although the movie is disgusting.

It's an odd video man, I'll give you that. I watched about 15 minutes or so of it. The narrator does make some interesting points, but I think it was just that mystique about snuff films that they seem to have. Even though the stuff that was shown was disgusting it was still... interesting. Then again I think a lot of people do have at least some morbid curiosity of death.

Really though for me it is just the atmosphere surrounding these kind of films. I'm not going to say I liked it, or enjoyed it, but I was at the very least intrigued. Most of the scenes are fake though, except for some of the animal ones.

So I win?

They killed animals in it too, including a sea turtle. They just gave them to natives to eat.

I finished it nonetheless... Let's just say I had a terrible night of sleep. :-#

The last scene of the movie is a woman getting raped and then killed/eaten :? ...

I've seen some parts of the movie and I have to say I found it quite interesting and disgusting at the same time but nothing more than a movie with explicit content, I've seen lots of images and some videos of mutilation,( animals and humans from babies to adults) and I find it normal to tell the truth, most of us find it disgusting or traumatic simply because we are not familiarized with it but is something that happens day to day and of course because it's the part that mainstream media does not show you, I see these kinds of films as a reality viewpoint,( I know some of the scenes are fake but still is something that happens in reality) not that I am sadistic or anything like that but if somebody comes with a film like this to me , I'd mostly watch it.
